Amazon just launched their own memory foam mattress as part of the AmazonBasics Collection. I bought the 12-inch version as I have found that most 8 inch mattresses just don’t support me properly at 200 lbs. This AmazonBasics mattress features 3 layers of foam and is on the softer side of the spectrum among all the memory foam mattresses I have reviewed with similar construction. There are dozens of mattress brands which you can purchase on Amazon. Some of the more popular brands being Zinus and Lucid. The Amazon Basics Mattress leads the pack for price. As of this writing, a queen size comes in at $260. I’m not sure how or if Amazon makes any money selling this mattress but regardless, its a super deal for consumers.
Overview of the Amazon Basics Mattress
This mattress is obviously available only on Amazon.com. It is Prime eligible so ships fast
Here’s a quick video overview of the Amazon mattress. As you can see it is a no-frills cover but that’s OK because you won’t see it once you put sheets over it.
How Much Does the AmazonBasics Mattress Cost?
Below are the current prices of the mattress in each thickness. I recommend checking the current prices on their website as Amazon frequently changes prices, especially on Black Friday and Prime Day.

Construction of the Amazon Basics Mattress
Here are the construction specs for the mattress. Surprisingly, Amazon lists the same specs for all 3 different models, the 8, 10 and 12 inch. The picture above is the inside of the 12 inch.
- Twin-size memory-foam mattress with 3 foam layers for optimal softness and support
- Top memory-foam layer accommodates the body’s shape and weight, providing supportive comfort for any sleeping position
- Circulating airflow thanks to breathable holes in the 2nd layer of foam and by the wavy surface of the 3rd layer of foam
- Safe, durable design includes CertiPUR-US Certified foam and an Oeko-Tex Certified top fabric that’s both soft and strong
- Measures 75 by 39 by 12 inches; weighs 55.4 pounds; backed by an AmazonBasics 1-year limited warranty
- Removable cover for easy washing
I found it interesting that Amazon would use 2 layers of convoluted foam as the base layer.
My AmazonBasics Mattress Findings
Overall this mattress is softer than most that I have reviewed. I weight 200 lbs. and it supports me just fine although I wouldn’t recommend it to stomach sleepers over 170 lbs. Given that, I wouldn’t recommend the 8 or 10 inch at all to people over 200 lbs. as I don’t think the mattress would be thick enough to support you properly. The 12 inch is good though and it comes in at a great price.
Here’s a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball on the mattress to give you an idea of how much it sinks.
The video below illustrates how much motion transfer you can expect with this mattress. Usually denser foam mattresses are better at containing movement. The foam in this mattress is not as dense but that said it contains motion much better than a spring mattress.
To give you an even better idea of what to expect with this mattress, here’s a little video showing how each layer reacts.
My AmazonBasics Mattress Recommendation
The biggest benefit of this mattress is the price. It’s hard to beat a $260 12 inch memory foam mattress shipped to your door. That said, you should be somewhat confident that you will like it. The return process won’t be easy and it will be costly compared to the price you paid, so much so, that you are probably better off keeping it or giving it to a friend.
If you know that you like the feel of memory foam and want a mattress a little on the softer side, this would be a great choice. If you are looking for something firmer, try the Lucid Hybrid. Amazon didn’t disappoint with this mattress though. The price is almost unbelievable and for that its definitely worth considering. If you are on the move or in a temporary living situation, I would give this mattress serious consideration.
