Best Memory Foam Mattresses 2017 Guide

Memory foam mattress reviews online are often dated. That’s because there are so many brands coming online right now, it’s hard to keep up. This an up to date list of the best memory foam mattresses for 2020. There are many mattresses that have some foam in them including innerspring mattresses also known as hybrid mattresses. This post focuses on mattresses that are made of all foam but breaks them down into the best in their category. After trying hundreds of beds over the past couple of years, I have found that there is no better material than memory foam when it comes to pressure relief. The magic lies in the combination of foam densities used and other new cooling technologies to create a feel that is best for your needs.

1. Best Overall Memory Foam Mattress

Alexander Hybrid

best memory foam mattress

The Alexander Signature Select from Nest Bedding is a excellent blend of foam densities, layering, cooling technology and aesthetics. What I appreciate about this mattress is that strikes the perfect balance between support and sink. The top of the mattress looks like a pillow top but you won’t get any of the issues where you and your partner would roll into each other. The mattress recovers quickly for a foam mattress which means you won’t have any lasting impressions or fight to change positions at night.

The cover is made with a phase change material to keep you cool at night and help you fall asleep faster. This mattress comes in three different firmness levels but the majority of sleepers will find the medium firm to be the ideal firmness. Unless you know that you want a really soft mattress, you should then go with the soft option. I rarely recommend the firm.

2. Best Traditional Memory Foam Mattress

Nectar

Nectar Mattress Heavy PeopleMany people who have had a memory foam mattress for a while really appreciate the feel of ultra-dense foam. This feel is what you get on a traditional Tempurpedic mattress. With the Nectar you will slowly sink in as the foam conforms to your body. In terms of pressure relief, this mattress is hard to beat. There are some trade offs such as slow recovery and heat retention but Nectar has created a mattress ticking that helps to keep you cool. It will sleep hotter than some of the other less dense memory foam mattresses. What you will find with this mattress is that when you find your ideal sleep position, there’s really no reason why you should be waking up at night to change positions because the mattress is that good with pressure relief. Because it is ultra-dense foam, you also get great support. This is an excellent choice for back and stomach sleepers.

Nectar is tops for handling motion transfer and for price. If you have a good foundation, which they also sell, you aren’t going to feel your partner moving around at night.

This mattress skews slightly towards the firmer end of the spectrum in general due to the dense foam so if you are looking for a softer mattress, you may want to look elsewhere. If you want to get the ultra-dense foam experience, I highly recommend the soft.

3. Best Performance Memory Foam Mattress

Layla

best performance memory foam mattress

The Layla mattress is actually 2 mattresses in 1. You can take off the cover, flip it to make it firmer or softer. I recommend this mattress for the soft side because it is one of the few memory foam mattresses I have reviewed that is soft but recovers quickly. Additionally, the Layla is the first copper-infused mattress. Copper is used for its cooling properties to help keep you from overheating at night and copper is also anti-microbial which is why there are so many copper door handles. Aside from all the advanced cooling features and the customization, the mattress just feels great. You get to really sink into this mattress without getting stuck. This mattress is an excellent choice for people new to memory foam and want to experience all its advantages without the common drawbacks of heat retention and slow recovery.

4. Best Budget Memory Foam Mattress

Zinus Green Tea Mattress

Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress

The Zinus Green Tea mattress is an extremely popular Amazon mattress. As of this writing, the Zinus mattress has over 4,000 positive reviews and counting. Based on the sheer number of reviews they are selling lots of these mattresses. A queen size can be had for under $300.  At 12 inches thick, it is a substantial mattress. It has the name “green tea” because it has a green tea scent. This mattress is made in China which is why the costs are so low. It’s also less expensive because they drive a lot of volume. They also only have a 30-day warranty which is much shorter than many of the other online brands. Read the full review and get an extra 10% off when you buy direct from Zinus.com

5. Best Luxury Memory Foam Mattress

Wright

The Wright Mattress is the right mattress when it comes to memory foam. Their queen size mattress retails at $1,795 however I still haven’t slept on a memory foam mattress that transitions as well as the Wright. You don’t feel each layer. You sink in just the right amount and the mattress recovers at a good pace. The cover looks beautiful and you get the royal treatment with delivery. Free shipping both ways and they will deliver it into your house, set it up and haul away your old mattress. All with a 120 free trial period. If you have been disappointed with other memory foam mattresses, don’t give up hope. Give the Write mattress a try. If you don’t love this mattress, then memory foam just isn’t your style.

  1. Thanks for the good read Ben!

I would switch the Alexander signature for the Alexander hybrid though. Hybrids are still inner spring mattresses at heart and I wouldn’t really call them a “foam mattress”. Just my opinion anyways. Thanks for keeping the blog up to date with fresh articles!

  2. When it comes to sleeping, we love our Queen Luxi mattress where we also got a free pillow! The best feature is its versatility to adjust to two different sleepers. He likes med-firm and I like med-soft. Yes, you can have it both ways! The packaging was easy to get upstairs, unfolded in one hour, and we slept on it that night. We would highly recommend Luxisleep.com.
