The Zen Haven mattress was created by the Saatva company, which is a well-known manufacturer of high-quality, eco-friendly bedding products. Saatva was founded in 2010 with the goal of creating a luxury mattress at an affordable price point.

After several years of research and development, Saatva introduced the Zen Haven mattress in 2016. The Zen Haven was designed to offer a premium, all-natural sleeping experience that is both comfortable and supportive. The mattress is made from 100% natural Talalay latex, which is a sustainable and eco-friendly material that provides exceptional comfort and support.

One of the unique features of the Zen Haven mattress is its reversible design. The mattress has a firm side and a plush side, so you can choose the level of support that is right for you. In addition to the latex layers, the Zen Haven mattress also features a soft organic cotton cover and a layer of New Zealand wool, which helps regulate body temperature and wick away moisture.

Since its introduction, the Zen Haven mattress has received high praise from customers and sleep experts alike. The mattress has been recognized as one of the best all-natural mattresses on the market, and has been featured in a variety of publications, including Forbes and USA Today

The Zen Haven mattress is the latest offering from the company that also created the Saatva and Loom & Leaf. The Zen Haven is my favorite of the 3 lines of mattresses. It is made using Talalay latex with an organic cotton cover. The Talalay latex is softer than traditional, Dunlop latex so conforms to your body better, almost as closely as memory foam but without all the off-gassing issues.

Ordering your Zenhaven Mattress

Ordering the ZenHaven mattress is a bit different than the typical mattress in a box model. That’s because this mattress does not come compressed. Once you place your order you will receive a call from their customer service department to confirm the order is correct and to schedule a delivery. Once the mattress arrives to your local delivery company you will get a call to schedule a delivery within a 4-hour time frame. You can even choose to have your old mattress taken away. This is a $39 charge you can opt into by selecting it at checkout. If you know you have an extra tight space, there is an option to order a split queen which will function the same as a regular queen just in two pieces for easier maneuverability.

Unboxing the Zen Haven Mattress

This mattress arrives in a box to fit the full expanded size of the mattress. Below is a picture of a queen size Zen Haven mattress in the box. There is no outgassing with this mattress. That’s because it is all natural. There’s no foam to out gas and it’s ready to sleep on immediately.

zen haven box

Note that you can flip the mattress to have a slightly firmer side if the other side is too soft.

Each side has a tag to show its firmness level:

luxury plush

Here’s the other side:

Zen Haven Gentle Firm

According to Zen Haven, 80% of customers will prefer the luxury plush. It’s the one I prefer as well. A problem with some latex mattresses is that it is hard to get the firmness right. However Zen Haven has done a really good job of balancing softness and support. They accomplish this in part due to choosing talalay latex but they have also created a 5 zone support system that helps keep your spine in alignment.

Specifications and construction of the Zenhaven

The Zen Haven is an all natural latex mattress. What makes this mattress unique is that it uses all Talalay latex. This latex is made in the USA and can be made to be softer than traditional Dunlop latex. The mattress is constructed by placing the firmer layers at the bottom and the softer layers at the top however if you flip it then you have a firmer mattress. A simple concept but a great way to get two mattresses in one.

There is also a layer of natural wool that helps with cushioning and temperature regulation. The cover is organic cotton. This makes the Zen Haven one of the most natural mattresses out there under $2,000.

My Zenhaven Findings

The two sides of firmness aren’t drastically different. Below is a picture illustrating sinkage on the soft side of the mattress. Because this is a latex mattress, it will have instant response and some bounce.

zen haven

Here’s a video illustrating bounce and motion transfer on this mattress. It will have significantly less motion transfer than a typical inner spring but more motion transfer than an all memory foam mattress:

Here’s the video again in slow motion:

This mattress is going to be fairly temperature neutral. The latex is poured into a grid so that it has holes, these holes help with breathability. I find latex mattresses to sleep a bit hotter than inner spring but cooler than most memory foam.

Conclusion and Zenhaven Review Recommendations

The Zen Haven mattress is a very competitively priced mattress given the materials inside. It’s hard to find a latex mattress with wool and organic cotton at this price point. It’s even harder to find a Talalay latex mattress at this price point. The additional value add is that you can flip it for different levels of firmness. It can also be used on an adjustable base.

Zen Haven has also set a new precedent for all latex mattresses by offering a very generous 75 day trial period. If you don’t like it you can return it minus the delivery fee. Saatva, the parent company of Zen Haven is known for their stellar customer service and this is alone is a great reason to give the Zen Haven a try if you’re in the market for an all natural latex mattress.

Zenhaven Complaints

    • Too firm: Some sleepers, especially lightweight side sleepers, find the Zenhaven to be too firm and lacking in pressure relief. This can lead to discomfort and pain in the hips and shoulders.
    • Bouncy: The latex construction of the Zenhaven makes it quite bouncy, which can be disruptive to couples or restless sleepers.
    • Expensive: The Zenhaven is one of the more expensive all-latex mattresses on the market.
    • Not ideal for heavier sleepers: While the Zenhaven can support a wide range of weights, some heavier sleepers may find that it does not provide enough support.

Overall, the Zenhaven is a well-made mattress with a lot to offer, but it is not for everyone. If you are a lightweight side sleeper, a restless sleeper, or on a tight budget, you may want to consider a different mattress.

Here are some things to keep in mind when reading online reviews of the Zenhaven:

    • People have different preferences: What one person finds comfortable, another person may find too firm or too soft.
    • Body type matters: A mattress that is comfortable for a side sleeper may not be comfortable for a back sleeper.
  • It takes time to adjust to a new mattress: It can take up to a few weeks to get used to a new mattress, so don’t give up on the Zenhaven if you don’t love it right away.

Zen Haven vs. Birch

The Zen Haven and Birch mattresses are both high-quality, eco-friendly mattresses that offer excellent comfort and support. While they share some similarities, there are also some key differences between the two.

One of the biggest differences between the Zen Haven and Birch mattresses is the materials used in their construction. The Zen Haven mattress is made from 100% natural Talalay latex, which is a sustainable and eco-friendly material that provides exceptional comfort and support. The Birch mattress, on the other hand, is made from a combination of natural materials, including organic cotton, wool, and latex.

Another difference between the two mattresses is their firmness level. The Zen Haven mattress is designed to be reversible, with a firm side and a plush side, so you can choose the level of support that is right for you. The Birch mattress, on the other hand, is available in just one firmness level, which is medium-firm.

In terms of price, the Birch mattress is generally more affordable than the Zen Haven mattress, although both are considered to be in the luxury mattress category.

Ultimately, the choice between the Zen Haven and Birch mattresses will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a mattress that is made entirely from natural materials and offers customizable firmness, the Zen Haven mattress may be the better choice. If you are looking for a more affordable natural mattress with a medium-firm feel, the Birch mattress may be the way to go.

Zen Haven vs. Awara

The Zen Haven and Awara mattresses are two high-quality, eco-friendly mattresses that offer excellent comfort and support. Both mattresses are made from natural materials and are designed to provide a comfortable, restful night’s sleep. However, there are some key differences between the two.

One of the biggest differences between the Zen Haven and Awara mattresses is their construction. The Zen Haven mattress is made from 100% natural Talalay latex, which is a sustainable and eco-friendly material that provides exceptional comfort and support. The Awara mattress, on the other hand, is made from a combination of natural and synthetic materials, including organic cotton, wool, and latex.

Another difference between the two mattresses is their firmness level. The Zen Haven mattress is designed to be reversible, with a firm side and a plush side, so you can choose the level of support that is right for you. The Awara mattress is available in just one firmness level, which is medium-firm.

In terms of price, the Awara mattress is generally more affordable than the Zen Haven mattress, although both are considered to be in the luxury mattress category.

Ultimately, the choice between the Zen Haven and Awara mattresses will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a mattress that is made entirely from natural materials and offers customizable firmness, the Zen Haven mattress may be the better choice. If you are looking for a more affordable natural mattress with a medium-firm feel, the Awara mattress may be the way to go.

Zen Haven vs. Avocado

The Zen Haven and Avocado mattresses are both high-quality, eco-friendly mattresses that are designed to provide excellent comfort and support. While they share some similarities, there are also some key differences between the two.

One of the biggest differences between the Zen Haven and Avocado mattresses is their construction. The Zen Haven mattress is made from 100% natural Talalay latex, which is a sustainable and eco-friendly material that provides exceptional comfort and support. The Avocado mattress is made from a combination of natural and synthetic materials, including organic cotton, wool, and latex.

Another difference between the two mattresses is their firmness level. The Zen Haven mattress is designed to be reversible, with a firm side and a plush side, so you can choose the level of support that is right for you. The Avocado mattress is available in two different firmness levels: standard, which is medium-firm, and pillow-top, which is plush.

In terms of price, the Avocado mattress is generally more affordable than the Zen Haven mattress, although both are considered to be in the luxury mattress category.

Ultimately, the choice between the Zen Haven and Avocado mattresses will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a mattress that is made entirely from natural materials and offers customizable firmness, the Zen Haven mattress may be the better choice. If you are looking for a more affordable eco-friendly mattress with a choice of firmness levels, the Avocado mattress may be the way to go.

  1. I ordered the Zenhaven. It is clearly well made, we noticed no off-gassing, and i suspect many people will love this bed. Sadly i have some issues and the mattress has not worked out as i hoped. As a side-sleeper, the plush side was too soft for my arthritic hips, and the firm side not comfortable for my arthritic shoulders. For test purposes, i added a Tempurpedic 3″ topper to the firm side of the Zenhaven and that made everything comfortable. (But the Tempurpedic’s off-gassing is horrible! Now my sinuses are suffering.) I am having a tough time justifying the expense of both the mattress and topper. Might there be one mattress, preferably natural and without or only minimal off-gassing, that might work for me? Any suggestions while we’re still in the trial period? Any help is much appreciated.

  2. Great reviews all around, thank you! How would you say this mattress compares overall to the My Green Mattress Natural Escape or Alexander Hybrid Latex? My husband and I are moving from a FloBeds latex/memory foam King and were leaning to trying a latex/coil hybrid. We like a firm support with some cradling in the top comfort layer, but would like to maintain reasonable motion isolation. Most mattresses we have tried and liked tend to be termed “Luxury Firm.” We are also open to the adjustability of the Luxi, if we cannot find a natural bed that seems a good fit for us. Any thoughts?

  3. Gary, I have the Zenhaven also and just contacted them as the soft plush side is great but still not like a memory foam for me. So, i’m near the end of my trial and it’s a difficult decision, I like all of the organic features as well. They did offer me a 4″ latex topper for an additional 90 days in home trial for both the original bed and the topper. I am taking a day to consider it or just going to go with their Loom & Leaf bed. What I love about the Zenhaven is the organic qualities, no chemicals etc and that I do not wake up in pain. At age 48 with a few car accidents and being tall with slight scoliosis this is huge and the reason I gave my old bed away to someone in need. I’m working with the company for the best solution. Give them a call, they are very helpful.

    • Kathleen: Did you try the 4″ topper and how did it work for you? How much did they charge for the topper if you wanted to keep it? What was the softness of the topper? Was the topper also Talay Latex? Thanks – Brad

      Reply
      • I didn’t try the topper. I wasn’t aware they sent one. My assumption is that it would also be latex since the whole point of the mattress is to be fully natural latex. I would contact them direct to see what their return policy is if you take the topper. Thanks for the info!

  4. Just received my Zenhaven mattress, box and metal frame. I love it!! Delivered on Thursday, today is Saturday and I love the difference this mattress has made in my life. Granted our old typical spring mattress was very old (15plus years). Due to illness I spend way too much time in bed. I researched, priced, laid down and researched more to find a new mattress that both my husband and I would like. I just crossed my fingers and jumped – when I decided on the latex Zenhaven mattress. I was drawn to the price, the healthy aspects and the reviews. My husband hated sinking in on the memory foam type. I also sleep very hot, but I have not sweated once yet. I wouldn’t change a thing. I love the feel, soft but firm, very little bounce (my husband is a flip flopped sleeper), I feel fully supported and my hips haven’t felt this good in months (years?). I was having painful hip problems and swollen leg all the way to my foot. I didn’t know what it was. Doctor tested everything with no results. I don’t know if it was the bed after all, all I know is I have had ZERO leg swelling since we got this new bed. My hips feel so good, finally. My husband really liked the bed too. He has a bad back and he said he didn’t feel as stiff when he got up. There was almost ZERO smell when in was un-boxed, unlike some complaints of the memory foam type. The drivers were so professional. They even waited for me (I thought the bed was coming the next week, so I was caught off guard when they knocked on my door – my fault). I love the soft but firm feel. No smell, I can sit on the edge of the bed with no problems, I bough the box (8″) and metal frame. Perfect height for me, and I’m only 5’3″. I also love the price!! I would absolutely choose this company for our next bed purchase – which may be soon for our college age son. (I hope I got the ratings correct. Everything is great so a rating of 10 is perfect!)

  5. can anyone who has owned and slept on this mattress for over a year please comment on if this mattress sags? I’m looking for a chemical-free mattress and wanted to give all latex a try, but I’ve never owned one. My biggest frustration about any mattress is one that gets the body indentions after sleeping on it for a period of time. Do latex mattresses retain their support? Thank you!

  6. I just ordered a Zen Haven bed, but am confused about what kind of bed frame I need to get. I was told by the ZH rep not to use a frame with slats, but every wood frame I’m seeing online has wood slats. Even if they lie flat, will they not work with this mattress? And if not, what are our options?? Thanks!

    Reply
    • Hi Stepahanie,

I guess by now you must have figured it out about the wood slats. I have a platform bed with 3″ wood slats spaced at 3″. I am considering buying a Zen Haven mattress. Called Customer service, and they informed that a 1/4″ plywood layer above the slats is needed to support the mattress evenly. Plywood board can easily be purchased in a shop like Home Depot, low cost.

  7. I have had the Zenhaven mattress for over a year now and want to share these observations:
    1) Zenhaven is pressure relieving, but sleeps hot.
After it broke in, softened up a bit, and was very comfortable to sleep in. I have come to the conclusion that most any mattress the you sleep “in” not on, has a greater potential to sleep hot. The latex may not be as bad as memory foam, but it is still bad. What happens is that as the night wears on and I get into the AM and perhaps REM phases (which I understand are the times when our body does not regulate body heat was well), the heat builds, isn’t dissipated and I get hot, often sweaty and I wake up because of it. If I roll over to another spot on the mattress, it is clearly cooler. I would not get again for this reason. My son got a Purple 4 and it does not build up heat nearly as much and is still comfortable.
    2) Zenhaven didn’t publish my 3 star review on their own web site.
Maybe like many on-line mattress mfgs. they didn’t post my review on their site because it was not 5 stars perhaps. How dishonest.
    3) Better heat dissipation measures are needed.
I appreciate the detailed reviews like this especially the info. on heat retention, but it just doesn’t seem like enough guidance to help make a good decision. I would like something more real world and translatable to actual use. For example, maybe something that might shows heat retention and build up over a typical night of sleep, not just asking me to infer from a brief application of heat how it might sleep over an entire night. That might be a bit much to ask, but hey, things always improve and sometimes reviewers can be the ones to drive change in an industry.
Thanks for the review and taking my comment.

    • Thanks for the feedback. We are working with our engineers to develop a better test to measure heat retention and breathability for all our mattresses. I expect that to happen within a few months.

    • I don’t own a Zenhaven mattress, but am researching various mattresses. If you look at the reviews on their website, there are plenty of 3 star reviews posted. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume the company is being dishonest without looking a little further into the reviews that ARE posted to their website.

At the end of the day, the mattress experience is extremely subjective. Just because someone rates a mattress 5 stars, 3 stars or even 1 star, does not mean you’ll have the same experience. You’re better off reading the content and determining whether your sleep needs and preferences mirror those of the reviewer’s and whether it follows that the mattress in question would be a good fit for you.
