Trundle Bed Couch Guide: Daybeds, Mattresses and Sizes

Ben
IKEA HEMNES white daybed with storage drawers

Quick answer: A trundle daybed provides a main bed that can double as seating, with another sleep surface stored below. Some roll out as a lower separate bed; others expand into a wider shared surface. Check the mechanism and mattress thickness before buying—the two styles are not interchangeable.

This guide compares current product descriptions and practical dimensions. It is not a claim that Yawnder has personally tested every model.

Trundle daybed vs. sleeper sofa

Design How it works Best to check
Roll-out trundle daybed A second low bed slides out from underneath the main daybed. Whether it separates, its height, mattress depth and open floor space.
Expanding daybed The base extends and two mattresses may be arranged side by side. Whether it is meant as one expanded bed rather than two separate beds.
Pull-out sleeper sofa A folded sleep mechanism or platform opens from a sofa. Seating feel, mattress design, ease of opening and open footprint.

A daybed is generally a mattress on a frame styled for sitting as well as sleeping. It may feel deeper and more bed-like than a conventional couch. Bolsters and cushions help with sitting but can take up storage space overnight.

Three examples to compare

IKEA VIHALS daybed with trundle

IKEA’s VIHALS frame listing describes a daybed with a separate trundle and included slatted bases; mattresses and linens are sold separately for that listing. It displayed $299 on October 26, 2026. Check current availability, mattress dimensions, assembly requirements and delivery at your location.

Consider it for: A straightforward daybed and lower trundle. Check: You must budget for the mattresses and confirm the allowed thickness of the lower one.

IKEA HEMNES expanding daybed

The HEMNES frame combines three drawers with an expanding bed base. IKEA says it uses two twin mattresses stacked in the single-bed position and placed side by side when expanded. The manufacturer says the expanded configuration is intended as a double bed, not two separate single beds.

The frame-only listing displayed $449 on October 26, 2026 and sells mattresses separately. IKEA also offers a bundle with two ÅSVANG mattresses, shown at $707 when checked. Check the selected listing, availability and current price; bed linens are separate.

Consider it for: An expanding shared surface with built-in storage. Check: It is not the right choice if you need two independent single beds.

Max & Lily Delany twin daybed with trundle

The Delany listing describes an upholstered twin daybed and pull-out trundle. The seller specifies a trundle mattress no thicker than 5 inches and recommends an 8-inch mattress for the daybed. The listing showed a sale price of $569.49 for the displayed selection on October 26, 2026; stock and pricing vary.

Consider it for: An upholstered look and separate lower sleep surface. Check: Mattress requirements, age and weight limits, shipping and return terms for your selection.

How to choose mattresses for a trundle

  1. Check the specified size and maximum depth. A thick mattress may prevent the lower bed from closing or create an unsafe fit. Include the bedding if the maker specifies clearance.
  2. Confirm how many mattresses are included. Some listings sell the frame alone; others bundle one or two mattresses.
  3. Check support and weight limits. Follow the frame’s instructions for each sleep surface and avoid unsupported gaps.
  4. Consider the sleeper. A low trundle can be difficult for someone with limited mobility to get into or out of; test the usable height.
  5. Match the mechanism. A pop-up or expanding bed does not necessarily create a single seamless mattress. Check for gaps and manufacturer instructions.

Measure the room and total cost

Measure the furniture closed and fully open, including the path to pull out the trundle. Leave room for walking, doors and drawers. A rug, bedside table or narrow doorway can make a seemingly compact frame harder to use. Check delivery packages and assembly requirements.

Compare frame, mattresses, sheets, delivery and assembly together. Read return and warranty conditions for each item. For a broader furniture selection, visit the Zinus store (affiliate link; opens the store homepage). Check current daybed availability and specifications there. If you prefer a conventional sofa for daily sitting, compare the options in our sleeper sofa guide.

Follow the manufacturer’s age restrictions and safety instructions. A trundle or adult mattress is not an infant sleep surface; see the AAP’s infant safe-sleep guidance.

Plan the room in both configurations

Sketch the daybed against the wall and mark its full outside dimensions, including arms and any decorative back. Then draw the lower bed or expanded platform in its open position using the manufacturer’s measurements. Include the space needed to pull the mechanism out, open nearby doors and drawers, and walk around the bed. A compact frame can still need substantial floor space at night.

As a simple measuring exercise, if the closed daybed is 40 inches deep and the manufacturer says the open footprint is 78 inches deep, you need 38 additional inches for the bed itself, plus the walking space you want. Those numbers are illustrative; use the dimensions of the actual product. Tape the outline on the floor and try the room with furniture in its normal place.

Look at the floor surface too. A thick rug, raised threshold or nearby nightstand may make a rolling trundle difficult to use. Ask the seller how its wheels and mechanism work on your flooring, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than forcing the frame over an obstruction.

Match the setup to the people using it

Two separate guests

Choose a design that the manufacturer says can be used as two independent beds. Check the dimensions, height and weight limit of each surface separately, then confirm that each guest can get into and out of the lower bed comfortably. An expanding daybed intended as one double bed should not be assumed to provide two independent sleeping spaces.

One guest using a wider surface

For an expanding design, check how the mattresses are arranged, whether the two pieces have the same height and what the manufacturer says about the join between them. Do not assume the result will feel identical to a single larger mattress. Ask how the frame locks into its open position and what bedding fits the setup.

A daybed used for seating every day

Measure the seated depth and decide where the back cushions or bolsters will go when someone sleeps there. A mattress-based daybed can sit deeper than a conventional sofa, so try a similar setup if you expect to use it for long periods. Removable, washable covers can be useful; verify the care label for each piece.

A checklist for the first setup

Before assembly, match the boxes and hardware to the inventory in the instructions. Assemble the frame on a protected floor and use the supports supplied or approved for the model. Confirm the size and maximum thickness of each mattress, including any protective layer if the manufacturer specifies it. A mattress that is too tall can prevent the trundle from closing.

Open and close the mechanism according to the instructions, with people and objects clear of its moving parts. Check that the frame sits level and that any locking parts engage as directed. If it catches, stop and check the assembly and mattress fit rather than forcing it. Keep the instructions and proof of purchase for future replacement parts or a warranty question.

Frequently asked questions

Do trundle daybeds come with mattresses?

It depends on the exact listing. For example, IKEA’s HEMNES frame is sold separately from mattresses while a named bundle includes two.

Can a trundle mattress be any thickness?

No. Follow the frame’s limit. The Max & Lily Delany listing specifies 5 inches or thinner for its trundle, but other models differ.

Does every trundle rise to the main bed’s height?

No. Many stay lower, while some models use a pop-up or expanding mechanism. Verify the specific design.

Can HEMNES be used as two separate single beds?

IKEA says its expanded base should be used as a double bed, not as two separate single beds.

Are trundle beds comfortable for adults?

That depends on mattress support, frame limits, size and height. Check the manufacturer’s restrictions and whether getting up from a low bed is practical.

Final take: Decide whether you need two independent beds or one larger surface, then choose the frame and mattresses together.
