Purchasing & Unboxing The Nest Sparrow Mattress

I recently received the Nest Sparrow (medium) mattress from Nest Bedding to review. The Nest Bedding Signature mattress comes in a box like the one below with the Nest branding.

Nest Bedding Box

Purchasing the Nest Signature Mattress is super easy, just like the big-name competitors. You simply place your order through their website and the mattress will arrive at your doorstep in about a week or less. Shipping is also completely free.

How Much Does the Nest Signature Flippable Cost?

Below are the current prices before applying the 8% discount.

When unboxing the mattress, you will notice that it is NOT folded in half. Why does this matter? It matters because folding the mattress on itself and compressing it can cause unnecessary stress and may affect the overall lifespan of the mattress.Since Nest is a relatively small company in comparison to some of the other players in the mattress industry, they are very responsive and can make sure you get the right bed for your needs. Don’t be surprised to get an email response from Joe, quickly. Nest is known for their dedicated customer service. Not only are they responsive but they know their product and will be able to effectively address any questions you have.

Construction of the Nest Bedding Flippable Mattress

You can choose from 3 levels of firmness which is another distinguishing feature of Nest Bedding that sets this mattress apart from the likes of the one mattress for all model.

The Alexander Signature Series is made using a breathable, durable pressure-relieving, cooling Gel Foam, and a support base layer convoluted foam. They use CertiPUR-US Gel Foam and Support Base Foams.

The Alexander Mattress is so far my favorite mattress. As you can see, this is a very substantial mattress.

My Nest Bedding Signature Flippable Mattress Findings

The Alexander Signature Select mattress also has very little motion transfer. This is right up there with top of the line memory foam mattresses in terms of motion transfer. But what makes this mattress better is that you don’t get that stuck in the mud feeling. You sink in just enough and the mattress recovers very rapidly.

All these tests are done on a medium firmness mattress. You can extrapolate how a firm and soft would sink in from this picture. This mattress has just the right amount of sink for me. My wife also found this mattress to be a little softer than the Love Bed which she preferred. That said, this bed is more accommodating to various sleep preferences than most of the other beds I have reviewed.

Beyond that, Nest offers an industry-leading Lifetime Comfort Guarantee. Here are the highlights of this program. More details can be found here.

Our Industry First Lifetime Comfort Guarantee© affords the original purchaser of any Nest Bedding mattress the peace of mind of knowing Nest Bedding cares about your comfort for the lifetime of your mattress. Here is how it works:

  1. This is a review on the Yawnder. Ben has gone above and beyond in helping me decide which mattress to choose. We must have emailed back and forth at least 20 -30 times. He even relayed my questions and concerns to the CEO of the company and got him to contact me personally. The kicker was when he offered (i accepted) to face time with me. He got his wife to tell me her thoughts on the bed and also got her to jump on the mattress for me to see the bounce and cushioning. They were such a nice and pleasant couple. He seemed very ethical and did not try to push me in any way. He sincerely was concerned about the right fit for me. If you need help in deciding, the Yawnder is your man. When you are ready to purchase your mattress, please use his LINK at the end of any of his mattress reviews to go to the company’s website and enter your discount code from Yawnder . I cannot thank him enough for the support and advice he gave me.

  2. We have a temperpedic now but my wife said she isn’t comfortable on it anymore . I have been fighting a back injury for over 15 yrs from a fall . How does this compare ? Any additional info would be appreciated .

    • Tempurpedic beds do a great job of contouring to your body. However, I find that a Tempurpedic feels firmer than the Alexander Signature Select. How long have you had the Tempurpedic? Does it feel too hard now?

  3. My research has led me to… Leesa vs Alexander…

What are your thoughts for a side-sleeper with back pain (and insomnia)?

    Thank you!

    • I can’t really address your specific condition but I can say that these are two of my top rated beds. The Leesa will be more contouring to your body and a little less firm than the Love Bed at a medium firmness.

  6. First let me say I really like your reviews. I have found them very helpful when mattress shopping. I am also in the market for my first memory foam or latex mattress. I am about to order the Alexander but first I have one question. I suffer from chronic pain in my leg which forces me to unfortunately spend a lot of time in bed on a lot of days. How will this mattress hold up to say an average of 16 hours a day in bed versus 8 in your opinion?

    Reply
    • I would say that you can expect 7 good years out of it at that rate. It’s quality memory foam and may even last longer.

      Reply
  7. Could you please give me and opinion on how any of these compare with plain latex or stearns and foster mattresses?

    Reply
    • Most of the mattresses I have reviewed are memory foam. So the biggest difference is that they don’t have springs. When comparing to latex, you’ll notice that they do a better job of conforming to your body and relieving pressure. Memory foam is a wonderful sleeping material and I highly recommend it over most inner spring mattresses.

  8. We presently have a memory foam mattress (base foam, 3 inches 4 lb visco and 2 inches 3 lb visco) but my wife gets hot from the foam which disrupts her sleep most nights. We bought an Outlast heat balancing mattress pad a few months ago and that help someone but not enough. Any suggestions? Does the Alexander bed help with this issue? I didn’t see anything about how hot you get or don’t get with this mattress in your review. Thanks.

    Reply
      • We’re about 2 1/2 months in with the Alexander Signature Soft and one of the first things I noticed is that it does in fact sleep very hot. It’s my biggest complaint right now but enough so that I’ll be sending it back. Also, the softest mattress isn’t as soft as I had hoped. As a side sleeper I still wake up with some pressure pains.

  10. Thanks so much for all the bed info and reviews. I’m currently in the market for my first memory foam type bed, and am debating between the Leesa and Alexander Signature Select. Trying out mattresses in the store, my boyfriend and I both liked the Tempur-pedic Contour Elite the best. I was wondering if either the firm Alexander Signature Select or the Leesa compared more to the firmness feel of the Contour Elite. We are a bit leery of the Alexander Signature Select medium as we’ve seen it compared with the Tempur-pedic Cloud by more than one reviewer, and we did not like the feel of that mattress at all.

  11. Right now I am currently looking at either the Alexander or the Winkbed. I am a back sleeper and occasionally a side sleeper but I’m not familiar enough with mattresses to pick between springs and memory foam/latex. I would choose a medium for the Alexander and obviously Winkbed doesn’t have an option. Any advice between the two? I’ve read your reviews but it is still difficult to decide.

    Reply
    • The Alexander will feel softer at a medium firm as compared to the winkbed. If you don’t really have a preference for springs vs no springs, I would go with the Alexander.

  12. Do you know anything about the softest version? I have a pillowtop currently and really want something plush and luxe feeling!

  13. I’m curious about the temperature of this bed. I’m looking for something that isn’t going to cause me to wake up in the middle of the night due to heat issues. How does the Alexander do in this area?

  14. Is there anyway to use my existing box spring with the Alexander mattress? This mattress will be going on our antigue bed frame.
    Thanks, Tony

    Reply
    • A modern box spring should be fine with a memory foam bed. However older box springs were designed to have some give to work with an inner spring mattress. A good way to test whether or not your box spring will work on a memory foam mattress is to first test the memory foam mattress out on the floor and then on the box spring to see if you notice a difference. If you do notice sagging, I recommend slats as they will give you even support and allow the mattress to breathe.

      Reply
  15. For stomach sleepers I recommend a firmer mattress that will give you the support you need. An Alexander Firm or 4Sleep are great choices.

    Reply
  16. Would this work on a platform bed? We are upgrading to a King size bed, so we are getting a new bed and I prefer a platform bed. Could I use this mattress on a the slates or should I get one of those board things?

  17. I am wondering how you distinguish between your enthusiasm for the Honest Bed and the Alexander. Both seem to be favorites of yours. I’m a 200 lb+ man who is a side/stomach sleeper, which is pretty much the way you describe yourself, so I’m especially interested in your recommendations. Cost aside, how does one choose between those mattresses? Thanks.

    Reply
    • The Alexander is an all memory foam mattress. It’s a wonderful mattress. Honest Beds (also from Nest Bedding) uses foam and pocket coils which gives you the best of inner spring with a generous amount of memory foam on the top layer. The tufting is outstanding which helps to keep you cool. Best of all it has a medium firm and firm side so you really get two mattresses in one. If you are solely focused on pressure relief, you will be fine getting an Alexander. However if you want some good bounce, nice tufting and two firmness options, I strongly recommend Honest Beds. They are extremely well made and you can expect to easily pay double that in a Bloomingdales.

  25. A note for others considering this bed. We purchased this Alexander Signature in medium firmness, and we did not like the feeling of sinking in and getting stuck. It is a very nice bed, you can tell that it is very high quality craftsmanship and materials. It may just be that we don’t like the memory foam feel. It feels amazing when you first lay down, but if you want to roll over, it takes a very concentrated effort. Just something to be aware of before purchasing. Although they have the sleep trial, it is still not a pleasant process going through multiple beds to find the right one.

  26. I bought this mattress, and love it. Have the medium and they sent me a free topper that gives it a little more of a plush feeling. Currently have it on low profile box springs. I’m going to buy a platform bed this month – can this mattress lay on the slats or do I need something on the slats?

    Thanks!

  27. Well I have been having lower back pain due to my current mattress sinking ( a Sam’s Club Serta pillow top). I am a side and stomach sleeper.
I have been researching mattresses for a couple weeks now and I have an Alexander Signature Select in medium arriving next week and Easy Breather Pillow. Never felt one , so I’m ordering blind, but with their 101 day trial I figured I’d give it a try. Hoping I made the right choice.
I guess if it’s too soft/firm, I’ll send it back for the opposite.

  28. Thanks for your thorough reviews. I am thinking of purchasing the Alexander mattress. The frame we purchased (upgrading from queen to king bed) requires a box spring. I saw you suggested checking this product out: https://amzn.to/1JB2b4S. This seems to replace a frame altogether, but we only need a box spring. Any suggestions?

  30. We are keeping our traditional king bedframe but would like to purchase this mattress. In order for the Alexander to sit at a similar height in relation to our headboard as it currently does with a regular mattress+box spring, what should we get to go under the Alexander?

    Reply
    • JJ and anyone else reading here, The Alexander and almost all new technology mattresses these days do not use a “box spring” type foundation. Box springs are flexible bed foundations designed to be used with older, innerspring mattresses. Do not use this type of foundation with a new technology bed unless it specially calls for it. The alexander and most new technology mattresses need a solid, non yielding foundation such as: a solid mattress foundation (like they sell on the nest bedding website), strong slats less than 4 inches apart, or a solid platform bed to set on. You can also use the mattresses directly on the floor but the mattress may sleep warm due to the lack of air flow under the mattress. I bought the folding metal foundation found on nest bedding’s website and it works great!

  33. As a fairly hot sleeper, 250 pounds, side sleeper, with a slightly broader frame, would the medium-firm version of this be good? I enjoy a soft mattress but too soft ends up making my lower back hurt.

  34. I currently have a DynastyMattress New Cool Breeze 12-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress I bought from Amazon. When I sleep long enough (like 7 hours) I always wake up with lower back pain. In order to fix that, I’m not sure if I need a firmer mattress (this one is quite firm actually), or on the contrary, the pain is due to the mattress being too firm.
Do you have any suggestions from your or website visitors experience? Do you think I should aim for a medium or firm Alexander Signature?

    Thanks!

  36. I am shopping for a new mattress. I am torn between the Alexander signature, Loom & Leaf and Brooklyn Bedding, all in firm. I currently sleep on a firm tempurpedic that is over 10 years old and worn/sagged out. I prefer a firm memory foam or firm pillow topped innerspring to sleep on. I have never tried latex, although it sounds interesting. Which would you recommend out of the 3 I am leaning towards? Thank you!

  38. So far from your reviews, I’m thinking about the Brentwood Oceano and the Alexander Signature. I am a petite side-sleeper; occasional stomach sleeper with lots of shoulder/hip/neck discomfort. My husband is over twice my size. We have tried the Optimum gel, Temper Cloud Supreme, Sleep Number i8 and Latex Bliss. We loved the Westin Heavenly until it sagged pretty quickly. The latex was the best so far, but still gave me numbness in my arms. Giving up on mainstream mattresses and interested in seeing what online has to offer. Thank you!

  39. We are now at night 5 on the new Alexander Signature in luxury firm. We are very happy thus far with the mattress. It is certainly well made and comfortable. The luxury firm is probably an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale and is just a tiny bit firmer than I was hoping for. Don’t get me wrong, it is very comfortable for me and my side sleeping. I just wish the very top layer had a little more give to it. I am really splitting hairs here. I may add a soft topper to the mattress if it doesn’t soften up over time but I am thinking this bed will break in and be just right for me over the next few weeks. Even though it is only day 5, I have no problem recommending this mattress to others. The medium version of this bed should be comfortable for almost everybody. The firm should be great for stomach sleepers, heavier people (250 plus), and other people like me that just prefer a firm mattress. The only negatives I can think of is that there were a few loose threads on the cover and my mattress was folded in half, although it is supposed to be rolled. My stats: 5’11”, 210 lbs, muscular/athletic build, broad shoulders, side sleeper, previously slept on: 10 year old tempur-pedic deluxe in firm. I hope this helps somebody, thanks Ben!

  40. Hi, my husband and I have tried the Loam & Leaf medium firm, Tuft & Needle medium but because he & I are both side sleepers our sholders hurt most nights. We used a topper to no avail. We are curious which firmness to consider the Alexander Sogniture soft or medium? Our other mattresses we were thinking about is the Purple mattress. Ease give us your thoughts. Side sleeping is our.main issue.

      • The people with shoulder pain after side sleeping–99% likely their necks/heads aren’t supported and shoulders do all the work.

Next I’m going to write a separate question for my own benefit. Reading your responses makes me think you know what you’re doing.

        • I’m considering the Alexander medium. I have osteoarthritis pretty much everywhere, in spine + full spine peripheral neuropathy and fused cervical spine, damaged neck muscles. Much pain , and lost sleep. I sleep on my side with neck support on an older mattress, somewhat firm, and I know I need something different.
Would the Alexander medium be a good choice?? Any other mattress I should consider–Nectar?? Affordability also important. I’m 5″3′ about 112 lbs, share the bed with a 12-lb cat.

  41. Hi Ben,

I have tried Helix, Wink, OSO and a Brooklyn Bed in the last 6 months and none of them worked. I am side sleeper, weigh 130 lbs, have spinal stenosis and fibro and all of the above listed mattresses felt like I was sleeping on a sidewalk even though they were medium to medium soft firmness. Do you think an Alexander Soft would do the trick? Thanks

    • Yes, definitely give the soft Alexander a try. It has more of a pillow top feel than the others and doesn’t have any latex which gives you more push back than foam.

  42. I am 140 lbs, side sleeper, back and hip pain, and lots of problems with pressure points waking me up at night (especially my hips). I am really interested in trying the Nest Alexander. Is it best to go for the medium since that is supposed to work for the majority of sleepers? I’ve read a few comments that some people find even the medium to firm for side sleeping and it creates pressure points on their hips and shoulders. Any advice?

  43. After extensive online research, I’m down to the Alexander, Novosbed, and Saatva. I’m looking at the soft version of all of them. We’re mostly side sleepers, sometimes back. Avg height and weight. Like to sleep cool. I like to feel like I’m sleeping on a cloud. We have a pillow top now that has major indentations where we sleep. Which of these three would you recommend? Which will last the longest (best investment)?

    Reply
    • Between these 3 the Alexander would be the best choice for you. The Novosbed doesn’t have that pillow top feel that you are probably looking for. The Saatva will also feel a bit too firm and won’t provide as much hug as the Alexander.

I do prefer the sleep in hug vs sleep on. Tried my sister’s Purple bed but too firm on the base layers besides the awesome pressure relief grid. I’m at 175lbs / Side sleeper suffering from insomnia tossing and turning on my sleep number with added 3″ Talalay Latex topper. I’ve played with the air pressure and find when low, it’s not supportive enough or evenly distributed so I get too much pelvic tilt and lower back pain. Too much air pressure and it turns up the pressure points and I toss and turn a lot. Thanks for your help!

    • Between these two I would try the Alexander medium. The Oceano is going to be much more plush than the Nectar and the Alexadner will be a better fit if you sleep in all positions.

  50. Hello, I live in San Francisco and I just had the opportunity to try out the Nest beds. I am a side sleeper and currently sleep on a Duxiana bed. I have trouble with pain in my shoulder and hip that usually wakes me at some point during the night. I am 5’11, 175lbs, 34 inch waist. Not thin, but not really overweight. Anyway, based on your review of the Alexander Signature Select, I tried the medium and soft versions, liking the softer version slightly better. The salesperson recommended I give Q3 Latex model a try. She said the feel would be similar and is also a very good choice for side sleepers. It did feel remarkably similar after a 20 minute trial in the store. I went with the soft version of the Q3 with the topper. The salesperson also said that although the signature series does not “sleep warm,” the Q3 latex would sleep cooler. I also find myself warm while sleeping so cooling properties is a factor.

As a side sleeper, with shoulder and hip pain on my current DUX bed, do you have any thoughts about the Q3 vs the signature series? Or any other beds to consider? Thank you for this amazing web site and the reviews you provide!

    • I found the Q3 to sleep similar to the Alexander Hybrid in terms of coolness. I think if you wanted to sleep cooler, you may want to consider the Winkbed although I would go with the soft version of the Winkbed as those mattresses tend to skew towards the firmer end of the specturm.

  51. Hi, I have an few questions. I’m 6’6″, 240 lbs, I have RA in my hips and shoulders. I often wake up with lower back pain as well. My wife is 5’11” , 165 lbs she has hip, knee and shoulder pain. It’s fun being in your mid forties! We are both side sleepers. We have a 10 yr old+ pillow top queen innerspring mattress and needs replaced! We have looked at purple, nectar, and now the Alexander. I believe we like it the best.
Would you suggest the med or firm?
Can we put it on our existing foundation (it’s not a box spring) ? It seems solid as well as Our frame/head and foot board. Or is it better to buy to metal frame?
Dust mites are a big allergy problem for us. Would we need an allergen cover?
And lastly, what kind of mattress protector and sheets do you suggest?
We have really found your website very helpful!

    Thanks,
    J

    • I would go with the medium firmness. As long as the foundation is solid and doesn’t have any give to it you can put it on your existing foundation. No need to buy a metal frame. A mattress protector is a good investment as it will keep dust mites out of your mattress.I recommend this protector.

  52. Just wanted to comment on how helpful the SleepSherpa was in making our decision about which Alexander Signature Series mattress to select. We chose the agreed upon medium firm mattress and have not been disappointed. Finally, a mattress that meets Greg’s need for firmness and Denise’s need for support and “nesting.”
We had tried five other memory foam beds (from three different manufacturers) before we found this one. So happy to be sleeping in our own comfy bed. Will not be returning this one!

  53. How would you describe the difference in feel between the Oceano and and Soft Alexander? We’ve never slept on anything but a traditional mattress. We’re side sleepers for the most part. Thanks.

    • The Oceano is going to feel more like a traditional spring mattress whereas the Alexander will feel more like a pillow top foam mattress. If motion transfer is an issue, I would go with the Alexander. If you want a more traditional feel, I would go with the Oceano.

  54. Hi Yawnder,

I am not sure between the Lalya Mattress or the Alexander Mattress. I’m about 145-150 pounds and am mostly a side sleeper. I think my mattress now is not helping my shoulder due to being older and probably too firm. Which one sleeps cooler and would you say is best for side sleeping? Is it correct that the firmer a mattress is the worse it is for side sleeping due to pressure points not being supported? If you have any other mattresses you recommend, I’m of course open to exploring that. I appreciate your expertise!

    • They are both a good choice but I would try the soft version of the Alexander. You will sink into it more and given you weight it will support you great as well.

  55. Hi There,
I have read so many reviews to the point I am confused. I currently have a Tempurpedic flex supreme breeze (just a little over a year), and I wake up in pain. I am a side/stomach sleeper and it is just too firm. I wake up severe neck and shoulder pain. The mattress was extremely expensive and just not worth it. I am looking for a softer memory foam mattress, and I am between the Nest Alexander Supreme Soft or the Loom and Leaf. I am leaning towards the Nest because I can order a soft, however I sleep extremely hot. What would you recommend?

  56. Hi I am trying to decide between the alexander signature in either the soft or medium. I am 6’1 200 pounds. I like a bed that I slightly sink into, but I do not want to sink too much that I will sleep hot at night. Which firmness would you suggest? Also do you think the soft feel will begin to sag after a while due to the softness of the bed? I am also considering the Loom and Leaf, do you think that might be a better choice?

Thanks for all your help and great reviews.

  57. My husband has back issues, and hates this bed. His says it makes his back pain worse (he’s a back sleeper.) He had back surgery years ago, and it is still quite sensitive. He also tried Tempurpedic. I do not have back issues, and feel it’s too firm. We’re going to try Saatva next….

  58. Like many others here, I am struggling choosing a mattress.

I think it has come down to the Alexander signature hybrid plush vs. the plush Saatva.

Honestly, I’m just looking to find out which one is softer.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  59. Did they stop making this in the soft version? I can’t find it on their website when I click the link! The only options it gives me are medium and luxury firm.

  60. Is the Alexander Firm the firmest foam bed other than the TempurPedic Contour Supreme?
I am looking for the most firm foam mattress on the market. I tried the Snuggle-Pedic at your showroom and that was my favorite one there but I’d like to get something even firmer if that’s possible

    • I haven’t slept on anything firmer than the Snuggle Pedic for a foam mattress. The only other thing I can think of is the Airweave but that is a totally different material.

  61. I am a (youthful) 65 year old female, 5’2″, 115lbs. Cervical arthritis w/constant neck discomfort & stiffness, as well as general lumbar discomfort, also due to arthritis. No longer a stomach sleeper (immobile neck), I alternate between back and sides. First adult mattress was the old foam rubber (loved it), second was an Englander foam (just OK) followed by the Serta Black Innerspring (started sagging after a year with just me!). Do not like the dead-log feel of straight Temperpedic memory foam but don’t want a bouncy bed either. Planing either a hybrid or a straight foam layered option (thicker preferred), not too soft or too firm (pressure points). Given, so given my weight and size, what would you suggest? So many choices and reviews – I end up with analysis-paralysis.
