How to Keep Sheets Secure on Adjustable Beds

The quick fix

Start by matching the fitted sheet to your mattress size and actual depth, including any topper. A snug sheet with strong elastic is often enough. If a corner still lifts when the base bends, try compatible corner straps or fasteners, positioned clear of the moving mechanism.

A split king usually uses two twin XL fitted sheets—one per mattress—so each side can move independently. A shared king flat sheet is optional if you prefer it.

Why sheets slip

Raising the head or foot changes the shape of the mattress. A pocket that is too shallow can pull off a corner; one that is much too deep can bunch up and lose its grip. Worn elastic, a slippery protector and movement during sleep can contribute.

A standard fitted sheet can work on an adjustable bed if it fits well. You do not automatically need 15- to 22-inch pockets: those may be far too loose for a thinner mattress.

Measure for the right fit

  1. Measure the mattress width and length to confirm the size. For a split bed, measure each separate mattress.
  2. Measure its height from the bottom edge to the top, including any topper or thick protector.
  3. Compare that height with the fitted sheet’s stated pocket depth and fit range. Leave enough fabric to tuck beneath the mattress without a large excess.
  4. Check the sheet after washing: fabric and elastic may change with care and use.

Labels such as “deep pocket” vary by brand, so use the actual measurements rather than the label alone.

A split-king set commonly includes two fitted sheets plus a shared king flat sheet, but check the package contents. Some couples prefer separate top sheets or blankets for independent movement.

Try straps or corner fasteners

Elastic corner straps, sheet suspenders and sheets with built-in corner bands can add grip. Attach them to the sheet according to their instructions; avoid clips that damage delicate fabric.

Keep straps, clips and excess fabric clear of hinges, motors, moving parts and power cords. Do not fasten bedding to the adjustable frame. If a strap could catch as the bed moves, remove it and choose another solution.

Put the sheet on and test it

  1. Place the base flat if safe and convenient. Identify the sheet’s long and short sides; tags do not always mark the same corner.
  2. Fit one corner, then the opposite diagonal corner, followed by the remaining corners. Ensure the elastic wraps beneath the mattress.
  3. Raise and lower the bed while watching from a safe distance. Stop if fabric, a strap or anything else approaches a moving part.
  4. If a corner lifts, recheck depth and orientation before adding a fastener. Leave enough slack in a flat sheet or blanket for the mattress to bend.

Choosing fabric and care

Cotton percale feels crisp; sateen and lyocell often feel smoother; jersey can stretch. Fabric preference is personal, while pocket depth, elastic and dimensions generally matter more for staying on.

Follow laundering instructions and avoid excessive heat that can shorten elastic life. Replace a sheet if its elastic has stretched out. If you want to compare bedding in person, call the Yawnder showroom to confirm the items currently available.

Frequently asked questions

Do adjustable beds need special sheets?

Not always. A standard fitted sheet that fits the mattress securely may work well.

What sheets fit a split king?

Most split kings with two twin XL mattresses need two twin XL fitted sheets. Confirm the dimensions of your own setup.

Are deeper pockets always better?

No. Match pocket depth to mattress and topper height; excess fabric can loosen.
