I received a free Brooklinen down comforter for review. Want to stay toasty warm all year long? Brooklinen now has a down-filled comforter that will get the job done.  At only 25 ounces, it is extremely light but because of its high fill power (700) it insulates very efficiently. Think of sleeping under a giant down-filled jacket. So, what is fill power?

From Wikipedia:

Fill power is a measure of the loft or “fluffiness” of a down product that is loosely related to the insulating value of the down. The higher the fill power the more air an ounce of the down can trap, and thus the more insulating ability an ounce of the down will have. Fill power ranges from about 300 (in³/oz or 175 cm³/g or Lorch 75 mm/30g) for feathers to around 900 (in³/oz or 520 cm³/g or Lorch 225 mm/30g) for the highest quality down. Higher fill powers are associated with a larger percentage of down clusters and a larger average down cluster size.

Patagonia has a 800 fill power jacket that sells for $229. You can get a queen size 700 fill power for $299!

Unboxing the Brooklinen Comforter

Below I give an overview of the comforter

My Brooklinen Down Comforter Findings

I live in Minnesota where the temperature can easily drop to minus 20 or more in January and February. With our house being over 100 years old, it’s not very well insulated and our boiler has a hard time keeping up. Having warm clothes and warm bedding is essential. Last winter we had 4 layers of bedding to keep warm. So far, I am only using this comforter to keep warm and sometimes even that can be a little too warm! Granted, it is only late November but I am very happy with how well it insulates.

Below are the full specifications of the Brooklinen all season comforter.

To give you a sense of value, Pacific Coast Down’s Ultimate Extra Warmth comforter only has a 600 fill power and costs \$549.00. It is a little bigger at 90″x98″. But even the king-size Brooklinen is less at $379.00

Watch how it splays out on our king-size bed. I reviewed the king-size comforter. With comforters, if you have a queen-size bed I recommending going with a king comforter. It’s always nice to have extra to share.

My Brooklinen Down Comforter Recommendation

If you live in a part of the county that gets snow. That means its cold enough where you should consider an all-season down comforter. I turn down my thermostat at night to save energy and to sleep better. Having a quality down comforter will keep you cozy and warm all night long. A quality down comforter like this one will last decades. Real down will last longer than synthetic so it is a worthwhile investment.

Brooklinen Down Duvet Insert Pros, Cons, and Complaints

Pros of the Brooklinen Down Duvet:

  • Soft and fluffy
  • Breathable and temperature-regulating
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant
  • Responsible sourced down
  • 365-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty

Cons of the Brooklinen Down Duvet:

  • Can be expensive
  • May be too warm for some people
  • Requires regular fluffing and maintenance

Common complaints about the Brooklinen Down Duvet:

  • Some customers have complained that the duvet is not as warm as they expected.
  • Others have complained that the duvet is too bulky and heavy.
  • A few customers have also complained that the duvet leaks feathers.

Overall, the Brooklinen Down Duvet is a high-quality product that is well-received by most customers. However, it is important to note that down duvets are not for everyone. If you are looking for a duvet that is very warm or lightweight, a down duvet may not be the best choice for you. Additionally, down duvets can be expensive, so it is important to weigh the pros and cons before making a purchase.

Here are some tips for choosing and caring for a Brooklinen Down Duvet:

  • Choose the right warmth level for your climate and personal preferences. Brooklinen offers three warmth levels: lightweight, all-season, and ultra-warm.
  • Make sure to fluff your duvet regularly to keep it soft and fluffy.
  • Wash your duvet according to the care instructions. Brooklinen duvets are machine-washable and dryer-safe, but it is important to use a gentle cycle and low heat.
  • Store your duvet in a cool, dry place when you are not using it.

If you are considering purchasing a Brooklinen Down Duvet, I recommend reading the customer reviews carefully to get a better understanding of the pros and cons of the product.

Is a Duvet Cover Necessary?

  • Not Strictly Necessary: The Brooklinen Down Comforter has a smooth cotton sateen shell, so you could use it without a cover. However, a duvet cover is highly recommended for several reasons:
    • Cleanliness: A duvet cover protects the comforter from dust, sweat, and stains, reducing the need for frequent washing of the comforter itself.
    • Ease of Care: Duvet covers are much easier to remove and launder than a full comforter.
    • Style: Duvet covers come in a huge range of colors and patterns, allowing you to easily change the look of your bed without buying a new comforter.

Duvet Attachment Features

The Brooklinen Down Comforter is designed to work perfectly with duvet covers:

  • Corner Loops: It has loops in all four corners to securely attach to a compatible duvet cover.
  • Baffle Box Construction: The baffle box stitching keeps the down filling evenly distributed, preventing bunching and shifting inside the duvet cover.

Warranty

  • One-Year Limited Warranty: Brooklinen offers a 1-year limited warranty on their Down Comforter. This covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal household use.

Shipping Information

  • Free Standard Shipping: Brooklinen offers free standard shipping on all orders within the contiguous United States.
  • Expedited Shipping: Expedited shipping options are available for an additional fee. Delivery times will vary based on your location.
  • International Shipping: Brooklinen does ship internationally, but shipping rates and delivery times will vary.

Trial Period

  • 365-Night Trial Period: One of the major perks of Brooklinen is their generous 365-night trial period. You have a full year to test out the comforter, and if you’re not completely satisfied, you can return it for a full refund (minus a $9.95 return fee).

Brooklinen Vs.  Cozy Earth comforters

Warmth Options

  • Brooklinen:

    • All-Season: Perfect for most people and climates.
    • Lightweight: Ideal for hot sleepers or warmer weather.
    • Ultra-Warm: Designed for very cold sleepers or colder climates.
  • Cozy Earth:

    • Standard: Suitable for year-round use by most people, especially hot sleepers.
    • Extra Warm: Best for those who live in colder climates or who frequently feel cold.

Materials

  • Brooklinen:

    • Shell: 100% cotton sateen, known for its softness and subtle sheen.
    • Fill: Ethically sourced down and feathers with varying fill powers depending on the warmth option.
  • Cozy Earth:

    • Shell: 100% bamboo-derived viscose. Silky soft, breathable, and naturally moisture-wicking.
    • Fill: 100% bamboo-derived viscose. Provides a lightweight feel while still offering warmth.

Key Takeaways

  • Warmth Choices: Brooklinen offers slightly more flexibility with three warmth levels compared to Cozy Earth’s two.
  • Materials: The biggest difference is the fill and shell material. Brooklinen uses classic down for insulation and a cotton shell, while Cozy Earth goes for a fully bamboo-based design.
  • Feel: Brooklinen’s comforter will have a more traditional fluffy down feel, whereas Cozy Earth will feel lighter and have a silky-smooth texture.
  • Best for Hot Sleepers: Cozy Earth usually takes the win here, thanks to the breathable bamboo materials.

Choosing the Right Comforter

The best choice depends on your preferences:

  • Classic down feel & more warmth options: Brooklinen
  • Silky, breathable, & ideal for hot sleepers: Cozy Earth

Brooklinen vs. Buffy Down Comforter

  • Construction:
    • Baffle-box stitching: Creates small compartments that keep the down fill evenly distributed, preventing clumping.
    • Corner Loops: Securely attach to compatible duvet covers.
  • Fill Material:
    • Ethically-sourced down and feathers: Provides classic warmth and fluffy feel.
    • Fill Power Options: Ranges from 650-750 depending on the warmth level, indicating the fluffiness and insulation power of the down.

Buffy Cloud Comforter

  • Construction:
    • Sewn-through stitching: A simpler construction than baffle-box, but still effective in keeping the fill in place.
    • Corner Loops: For easy duvet cover attachment.
  • Fill Material:
    • Recycled fiber: Made from recycled plastic bottles, a more sustainable and hypoallergenic option compared to down.
    • Lightweight and fluffy: Mimics the feel of down, but with a slightly less dense feel.

Key Differences

  • Fill Material Ethics & Sustainability: Buffy wins here with their eco-conscious recycled fill compared to Brooklinen’s down.
  • Hypoallergenic Choice: Buffy’s fiber fill is naturally hypoallergenic, making it better suited for those with sensitivities.
  • Feel: Brooklinen’s down comforter is likely to have a denser, slightly heavier feel, while Buffy’s Cloud Comforter will feel airier and lighter.
  • Construction: Brooklinen’s baffle-box stitching provides slightly better fill distribution and prevents shifting compared to Buffy’s sewn-through stitching.

Which to Choose?

  • Classic down feel & maximum warmth – Brooklinen
  • Eco-friendly, hypoallergenic, & lighter feel – Buffy
