How to choose a recliner when you have back pain

If you struggle with back pain, finding the right recliner can significantly enhance your comfort and well-being. The best recliners for back pain feature targeted comfort through lumbar support, customizable positions, and even soothing heat and massage options. With numerous models available, it’s crucial to choose one that addresses your specific needs.

How Recliners Can Change Sitting and Resting Comfort

Recliners let you adjust hip, knee, and back position, which may feel more comfortable than a fixed chair for some people. They should be evaluated as furniture for comfort and mobility, not as therapeutic treatment for back pain.

I’m Ben Trapskin, and through my journey with sleep challenges, I founded Yawnder to help others navigate quality sleep products. With a decade of experience reviewing comfort items, I’m sharing the features I look for when comparing recliners for comfort and fit.

Recliners to compare for comfort and adjustability

Chair Features to compare Best question to ask
La-Z-Boy Brooks Power Rocking Recliner Power headrest and lumbar adjustment on the specified version. Does the seat depth fit you, and do the rocker and controls feel comfortable?
La-Z-Boy Pinnacle Platinum Power Lift Powered lift, headrest and lumbar on the specified version. Can you safely operate the lift and stand without unwanted pressure?
Flexsteel Argo Power Recliner Power headrest and lumbar with a zero-gravity reclining feature. Does the larger chair fit your body and room when fully reclined?

How to choose a comfortable recliner

Test the fit

Sit with your hips supported and check that the seat edge does not press behind your knees. Try the headrest and lumbar adjustment; more pronounced support is not automatically better. Test the chair in your usual positions and make sure you can enter and exit it comfortably.

Compare manual, power and lift

Manual mechanisms do not need an outlet, but try the lever or release to see whether it is easy to use. Power chairs let you adjust with controls; verify which components move independently. A lift chair assists with standing, but its fit, controls and suitability should be assessed for the person using it.

Measure your room

Check seat width and depth, doorway width, full reclined length and the manufacturer’s required wall clearance. For power models, plan for an accessible outlet and ask whether backup power is available.

Heat and massage are comfort features

Some people enjoy heat or massage; others find them uncomfortable. They are not established treatments for the cause of back pain. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, stop if the chair causes pain, and ask a clinician about use if you have an injury, impaired sensation, a medical condition or an implanted device.

Can a recliner help back pain?

A comfortable chair may make sitting or changing position easier, but no recliner has been shown to work for everyone or replace diagnosis and treatment. Vary positions and stay active as your clinician recommends. The NHS guidance on back pain discusses staying active and when to seek help.

Seek urgent medical care for back pain with new bladder or bowel control changes, numbness around the genitals or bottom, or significant new weakness in both legs. Contact a clinician for persistent or worsening pain.

Frequently asked questions

Is a firm or soft recliner better for back pain?

There is no universal firmness. Choose a seat that feels supportive without uncomfortable pressure, and test it long enough to see whether it is easy to change position and stand.

Does a zero-gravity recliner treat back pain?

No. It describes a reclining position; it may feel comfortable for some people but is not a treatment for the cause of pain.

Should I buy a lift chair?

A lift mechanism may help some people stand. Try the controls and movement, check fit and safety, and ask a healthcare professional or occupational therapist if you have mobility concerns.

Can I try a massage chair in person?

Yes. Yawnder’s Encinitas showroom offers select Osaki demonstrations. Call ahead to confirm which models are on display.
