Latex pillows offer several benefits over down pillows, depending on individual preferences and needs. Here are some of the advantages of latex pillows compared to down pillows:

  1. Hypoallergenic: Latex pillows are naturally hypoallergenic and resist dust mites and other allergens. This makes them an excellent choice for people with allergies or asthma. Down pillows, on the other hand, can sometimes trigger allergies due to the presence of allergenic proteins.

  2. Support and Comfort: Latex pillows provide excellent support for your head and neck. They have a responsive, contouring feel that helps maintain proper spinal alignment, which can reduce neck and back pain. Down pillows tend to compress over time, offering less support.

  3. Durability: Latex pillows are known for their durability and longevity. They can last for many years without losing their shape or support. Down pillows may require more frequent fluffing and have a shorter lifespan.

  4. Temperature Regulation: Latex pillows have natural breathability, allowing air to circulate, which can help regulate temperature and keep you cool during the night. Down pillows can be warm and may not be as breathable.

  5. All-Natural Material: Latex is derived from the sap of rubber trees and is a natural, eco-friendly material. Some people prefer latex pillows for their eco-consciousness. Down pillows, while natural, often require more processing.

  6. Noise: Latex pillows are quiet and do not make noise when you move. Down pillows may rustle or make noise as the feathers shift inside.

  7. Maintenance: Latex pillows are generally easier to maintain. They are resistant to moisture and odors and can be wiped clean. Down pillows may require special cleaning methods and can be more challenging to keep clean.

  8. Shape Retention: Latex pillows maintain their shape and support consistently, night after night. Down pillows may require frequent fluffing to regain their loft and support.

Brooklyn Bedding recently launched a new latex pillow that is made of Talalay latex. It truly caters to all types of sleepers. I have tried shredded latex pillows in the past and thought they were superior to solid latex pillows but this pillow proved me wrong. Latex is very resilient and recovers instantly which is something foam just can’t do.

My Brooklyn Bedding Pillow Findings

I really enjoy how this pillow feels. It is the softest latex pillow I have slept on. I appreciate that it is not too thick either. As a stomach sleeper, I can sleep on it with my arm underneath the pillow without putting my neck out of alignment. I also sometimes switch to my side and this pillow supports me just fine.

You will notice a smell with this pillow for a few days. That’s just the natural smell of latex which will go away eventually. The charcoal infused bamboo cover looks very nice and I like that it is removable in case you want to wash it. As I mention in the video, the pillow has a tiny hole that is created when pouring the latex into the pillow mold. This helps with breathing and keeps your head cool at night.

The only negative to this pillow that I have found is that the cover is dark. If you have white or a light colored pillowcase, the dark color can show through. This can be remedied with a white pillow protector but then you lose some of the breathability.

For those that prefer function over form, this has been the best latex pillow I have tried. The price is amazing too. It beats latex pillows that cost 3 times as much.

My Brooklyn Bedding Latex Pillow Recommendation

If you purchase this pillow through Brooklyn Bedding you get a 120 trial where you can return it if you don’t like it for a refund. They even send you a return label! If you purchase from Amazon you get a 30 return period but need to pay return shipping. It also comes with a 3-year warranty that protects against defects or indentations but I don’t see how anyone would be able to get anything under this warranty. Latex is very durable and it’s very unlikely that the pillow would fail to the requirements of the warranty. People are extremely picky about their pillows, much more so than mattresses so I can’t make any guarantees that you will like this one. All I can say is that the quality and value is there. Plus you have an excellent trial period.

Latex ILD and Firmness

ILD, or Indentation Load Deflection, is a measurement used to assess the firmness or softness of latex foam, including latex mattress toppers and pillows. It provides a way to understand how much force or pressure is required to compress the latex material by a certain amount, typically 25% or 65%.

Here’s a breakdown of how ILD works and what it means:

  1. Measurement: ILD is measured in pounds (lbs) and indicates the amount of weight (in pounds) required to compress a 4-inch thick piece of latex foam by a specified percentage (usually 25% or 65%).

  2. Softness vs. Firmness: A lower ILD number indicates softer latex, while a higher ILD number indicates firmer latex. For example, a latex foam with an ILD of 20 would be softer and more plush, while a latex foam with an ILD of 40 would be firmer and provide more support.

  3. Pressure Relief: Lower ILD latex is often used in comfort layers of mattresses or as pillow toppers because it provides better pressure relief and conforms more closely to the body’s contours. This can be especially beneficial for people with joint or pressure point issues.

  4. Support: Higher ILD latex is typically used in the core or support layers of mattresses because it offers more support and durability. It is better at maintaining its shape over time and providing a stable base for the mattress.

  5. Personal Preference: The choice of ILD often comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer a softer, plush feel, while others prefer a firmer, more supportive surface. The ideal ILD for you depends on your individual comfort and support needs.

  6. Sleeping Position: Your preferred sleeping position can also influence the optimal ILD for your mattress or pillow. For example, side sleepers may benefit from softer latex for better pressure relief, while back or stomach sleepers may prefer firmer latex for support.

It’s important to note that ILD is just one factor to consider when choosing latex products. Other factors like latex type (natural or synthetic), latex processing method, and overall construction also impact the feel and performance of latex mattresses and pillows. When shopping for latex bedding products, it’s a good idea to try them out in person if possible or carefully read product descriptions and reviews to ensure they align with your comfort preferences.

  1. I just absolutely love this pillow. I’ve always preferred latex, but this is without doubt the best I’ve ever used. It feels soooo luxurious! And it’s only $40. I like it better than pillows costing many times that.

  2. Do you recommend plush or firm? I’m an all over the place kinda sleeper. Start on side or stomach then switch to back and then back to stomach and side. Thanks! Looking for a pillow that can accommodate various sleeping positions that is a healthy alternative i.e. minimal off gassing. BTW we bought a Brentwood mattress thanks to your insights and we love it!!
