The biggest weekend for mattress sales is almost upon us, the labor day mattress sale 2016 extravaganza. That would be the Labor Day mattress sale. Labor Day is a big transition in for many families as kids go back to school, vacation come to an end and things start getting a little more structured.
This weekend and for that matter, the whole month of August is a boon for mattress sellers. Mailboxes start receiving the Red Plum marketing flyers filled with “deal of the year” mattress discounts creating a sense of urgency to buy.

Take the ad above. Mattress firm is selling a Sealy Posturepedic for $449 on “sale”. They also look to be targeting the back to school crowd as students head off to college. It’s not clear which model of Sealy Posturepedic is on sale for $449 either. Your only choice is firm which won’t appeal to some sleepers. This teaser ad will get you in the store thinking you will get the $449 but leave with something at least twice that. Â Also, once you make your purchase you most likely will only be able to return it for store credit.
Instead, why not give some of the new mattress startups a try? They eliminate brick and mortar all together and best of all you don’t have to deal with a salesperson or any sales pressure. You get to bring the showroom to your bedroom. The majority of mattress startups I review have very generous trial periods, usually around 100 day where they deliver the mattress to you and you can sleep in it in your own environment to really see if you like it. If you’re not happy with the mattress they will take it back and give you a full refund of your money, not store credit.
That means if you bought a mattress from say Leesa or Nest, on Labor Day, you could sleep on it until around mid December and still return it if not satisfied.
Finally, what makes these online companies so much better is that you maximum value. Take for instance the Alexander Signature Select from Nest.
If you are still determined to go to a mattress store on Labor Day weekend such as Mattress Firm, Sleepy’s, don’t fall for the high pressure tactics. You can always come back or check competitors online. If find a mattress in a store that you really like, I can suggest comparable mattresses from my reviews that you may want to try out so you can save yourself some serious money.
Happy Shopping!
