Novosbed Review – 6 Reasons it Beats Leading Brands

A modern, gray and white Novosbed mattress with a section of the top cover folded back, revealing the layers underneath. The top layer features a textured, floral-like design. The background is plain white, emphasizing the mattress.

Novosbed was founded in 2009 by Sam Lubell. Lubell was inspired to start the company after he had difficulty finding a high-quality mattress that was also affordable. At the time, most mattress companies were selling mattresses through traditional retail channels, such as brick-and-mortar stores. This added a significant markup to the cost of mattresses. Features

Next-generation cooling technology, designed specifically for active Canadian lifestyles. The channeled top layer of graphite latex foam works with the cooling gel layer below, acting as a thermal superhighway. Excess heat is transported quickly away from your body towards open-air channels where heat and body moisture can escape.

Sleep better by sleeping longer. Recore’s™ motion isolating comfort layer increases the number of uninterrupted sleep cycles you experience overnight, giving you as much restorative rest as possible. Not only does it reduce motion ripples across the bed surface, it’s also designed to cushion, contour, and relieve pressure around your joints and muscles.

Supporting you and your body at night helps you achieve greater results during the day. Recore’s™ three layers of performance foam are calibrated to a firmness fit for side, back, and stomach sleepers. The support system is designed to provide overall structural integrity, while also encouraging proper spinal alignment by preventing excessive sinkage.

A healthy sleep surface is clean, hypoallergenic, and odourless. Recore’s™ washable top cover contains antimicrobial silver thread to resist and minimize microbial buildup. Beneath the cover, the allergen-free latex delivers the same responsive comfort and durability as natural latex without creating or triggering allergic reactions.

My Recore Mattress Findings

Starting from the top, the stretch knit cover provides for maximum contouring and breathability. It also has a zipper so you can remove and wash it.

zippered coverThe Recore has just the right amount of sink to it so that it’s truly versatile enough for any sleeping postion. It’s also easy to switch positions at night given the top layer of foam is very responsive.

Here’s a look a how much my 14lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

recore sinkage

Here’s another view to show you sinkage and how much edge support you can expect.

recore edge support

This mattress has a zippered cover which is common for roll packed mattresses but it is positioned so that you don’t have to lift up the mattress to access it. This makes it much easier to remove and wash if you need to. Although, I strongly recommend a mattress protector.

zippered cover

In the video below I show you how much motion transfer to expect on the mattress. As you can see the other bowling ball hardly moves but the one that I dropped actually has some bounce which is rare for a foam mattress.

When you unzip the cover you will see that the top layer of foam has some holes in it which provides more breathability and air flow.

Here’s a side view of the layering. The middle layer is the cooling gel layer followed by the base support foam.

layers

Here’s a video showing how each layer reacts. The graphite latex top layer is the most responsive and the layer of cooling gel foam below it provides great pressure relief. The base layer is standard and provides a stable surface.

My Recore Bed Recommendation

The Recore mattress is a perfect choice for someone new to memory foam. You get all the pressure relieving benefits of foam but without the drawbacks of sleeping hot. Without springs you don’t have to worry about motion transfer either. With this mattress, there’s really no reason you would need or want springs.

I highly recommend this mattress to couples that have different sleep positions and have problems with partner disturbance at night. The Recore will certainly solve that problem. If it’s been a while since you have been in the market for a new mattress, you will be pleasantly suprised at how far foam technology has come and you get it all in the Recore.

Douglas Mattress Review: A Mattress for Canadians by Canadians

Douglas Mattress Review

he Douglas mattress is an all-foam mattress made in Canada. It has a medium-firm firmness level, which is the most popular firmness level for mattresses. The Douglas mattress is made with two layers of proprietary foams:

  • Top layer: 2 inches of gel-infused ecoLight memory foam. This layer provides pressure relief and cooling.
  • Bottom layer: 6 inches of base polyfoam. This layer provides support and durability.

The Douglas mattress is encased in a Tencel cover, which is a soft and breathable material. The mattress is also CertiPUR-US certified, which means that it is made with safe and sustainable materials.

The Douglas mattress is a good choice for people of all sleeping positions, but it is especially well-suited for back sleepers and side sleepers. The medium-firm firmness level provides good support for the spine and helps to keep the body in alignment. The pressure relief provided by the top layer of foam can also help to reduce back pain and shoulder pain.

The Douglas mattress is also a good choice for people who are looking for an affordable mattress. It is priced significantly lower than many other all-foam mattresses on the market.

Overall, the Douglas mattress is a good value for the money. It is made with high-quality materials, has a medium-firm firmness level that is suitable for most sleepers, and is priced affordably.

The Douglas mattress is a true Canadian mattress. It is made with materials all sourced from Canada, was designed by Canadians and can only be bought in Canada. This is a memory foam mattress that uses more eco-friendly foams than the competition which makes it a more responsible choice at a great price point.  Currently a queen size Douglas retails for $799 Canadian which makes it a fantastic value.

Overview of the Douglas Mattress

This mattress comes roll packed and shipped in a box to your doorstep. It takes about a week after placing your order for the mattress to arrive. Opening the mattress is as easy as removing the plastic packaging and letting the mattress expand to its full shape. It should be ready to sleep on in about 4-5 hours.

This mattress comes with a 120 night trial which means you can have it for about 4 months and if not happy, return it for a full refund. You don’t have to pay return shipping either. Douglas will work with you to make the return process easy and painless. If you want to keep your Douglas, you are backed by a 15 year warranty. Most online mattress company warranties are 1o years.

Here’s a quick video overview of the mattress.

How is the Douglas Mattress Made?

Douglas mattress layers

According to their website, Doulgas mattresses are made with Canadian-built foams and fabrics. The top 2” comfort layer is made of ecoLight™ cooling gel foam, developed to be 50% less taxing on our environment but just as durable as high density memory foam. The middle 2” layer is made of Elastex™ foam to give the mattress just the right amount of bounce. The bottom 6” support foam isolates movement and provides better edge support. The washable cover is made from an eco-friendly Natural Eucalyptus Fabric™.

My Douglas Mattress Findings

When you first lay down on this mattress you will notice that it immediately contours to your spine. This gives the mattress a soft feeling. You are then supported by the middle and base layer at the bottom.

Here’s a photo of my 14 lb. bowling ball to illustrate the point.

Douglas Mattress Sink

This is an all foam mattress so motion transfer is contained. In comparison to the hundreds of other mattresses I have reviewed the top layer recovers quickly for being a foam mattress making it easier to switch positions at night. You won’t get that stuck feeling that dense foam mattresses known for.

Here’s a vidoe showing how each layer of the mattress reacts.

My Douglas Mattress Recommendations

Overall I would rate this mattress on the softer end of the spectrum. I really like how the top layer feels. It is soft but recovers really quickly given how well it contours. This is what really makes the Douglas stand out from the other competition among the Canadian offerings. I think side sleepers will love this mattress because it really addresses pressure relief for your hips but especially your shoulders. Because the top layer of foam recovers fast, you don’t have to wait to get your, “spot” back when shifting positions or getting out of bed then coming back.

I recommend the Douglas to side back and occasional stomach sleepers that want quick contouring and a softer feel without sacrificing support or pressure relief. This mattress also sleeps on the cooler end of the spectrum for a memory foam mattress.

The Polysleep mattress is a memory foam mattress made in Canada. I was recently given a free queen size for review. It is made with a ventilated foam top that is responsive and more breathable than traditional foam. Another highlight of this mattress is that it comes with a liquid repellant cover. This will reduce the need for a mattress protector as spills will bead up on the mattress giving you time to clean up before liquids penetrate the mattress.

Overview of the Polysleep Mattress

The Polysleep mattress comes roll packed in a box and will be delivered to your door in about a week. It is made in Canada and is now available in the USA and Canada. It comes with a 100-night trial where if you aren’t happy with it, you will get a full refund.

Here’s a picture of the box that my queen size mattress arrived in.

Polysleep mattress box

Polysleep gives you a really nice tool to cut open the plastic packaging. Once you do this the mattress expands to shape and is ready to sleep on within a few hours. I recommend letting the mattress breathe for at least 2-3 hours before adding sheets and bedding. There will be some off-gassing with this mattress since it is an all foam mattress but it wasn’t that bad and for the most part, dissipated after 3 days with most of the smell going away after about 3-4 hours.

Opening the Polysleep mattress

Below is a video overview of the Polysleep mattress.  In the video, you can get a sense of how the mattress reacts.

Construction of the Polysleep Mattress

Here are the construction details of the mattress as listed on their website. I appreciate how transparent this company is with their construction details. It really helps you make apples to apple comparisons among other mattresses.

Liquid – Repellent Cover

The cover gives you a delicate, soft feel to lie on. It is also liquid-repellent to avoid any accidents. The sides are made of mesh, which allows the mattress to be more breathable.

Ventilated Viscoelastic Hybrid Foam – 3.0 lbs / ft3

The top layer is anti-microbial. It allows air to circulate, keeping you cool while adapting to your body. It identifies the pressure points, reduces the temperature and the firmness of these points in seconds only. It prevents any moisture from accumulating.

Support Layer – 1.8 lbs / ft3

The support layer serves as a transition between the top layer and the base. It is designed for your comfort and provides full body support to ensure a better sleep.

Supportive Foam Base – 1.8 lbs / ft3

The first layer, or base, of the ultimate mattress, is built with high-density foam and acts as a box spring, while providing unparalleled reinforcement. It adds durability, strength and comfort without feeling too firm.

Proprietary Support Frame – 2.0 lbs / ft3

The proprietary support frame makes this mattress truly unique. This keeps the mattress from flattening out when you sit along any of the edges and helps to reinforce the structure.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the Polysleep it’s hard to see the transition layer since it is a white hue like the other layers but it is there.

My Polysleep Findings

Below is a photo that shows how much the Polysleep mattress sinks. I used a 14lb. bowling ball in this picture. What you will find is that the mattress sinks quickly and recovers quickly this is due to the properties of the top layer. It was designed to be easy to move around on.

Polysleep Mattress sinkage

Here’s another video that helps illustrate this point and shows how each layer reacts.

There isn’t too much motion transfer with this mattress since it is all foam. What I did notice is that the ball did bounce back a little as opposed to just sinking in which will happen with a denser foam mattress.

How Firm is the Polysleep Mattress?

Among the memory foam mattresses I have reviewed I found the Polysleep to be a medium firmness. You will sink in slightly but not a lot. This means it’s easy to move around on and there is less “hug” to this mattress. It won’t envelop you like a more plush mattress would which means less of the mattress around you to trap heat.

My Polysleep Recommendation

There are hundreds of options now for memory foam mattresses in a box. What sets the Polysleep apart is that they have added some new technology to the mattress. The liquid resistant cover really works and if you drink coffee in bed or are prone to spills, this mattress is a great choice where you don’t have to use a mattress protector. A mattress protector will ultimately take away from the feel of a mattress by reducing its elasticity. It’s safe to say that a protector is optional with this mattress.

Polysleep also incorporates the latest foam technology in their mattress. Although it doesn’t conform as well as a denser foam mattress, it provides excellent pressure relief and quick recovery. The top layer is also breathable in that the channeled foam and mesh side panels help draw heat out of the mattress. This, in my opinion, is a better option than gel foam which only provides a temporary cooling effect.

If you are looking for a reactive foam mattress that sleeps relatively cool, has antimicrobial properties and a spill-resistant cover this is the mattress for you.
