Avocado has made a name for itself as being the premier online natural mattress brand.  The original Avocado mattress is a hybrid design with springs and latex with a pillow top option. Their new all latex mattress is a great choice for people that want the most eco-friendly design with zero motion transfer. Every component of this mattress is made with natural material and is completely biodegradable. In addition, the materials are ethically sourced.

recommendations.

Ordering Your Avocado Latex Mattress

The Avocado latex mattress can be ordered exclusively through the Avocado website. This mattress will arrive in about 7-10 days. They are made to order which is why it may take a little longer than your typical foam mattress in a box. This is also a very heavy mattress given it’s all latex. A queen size weighs almost 150 lbs. so instead of just dropping it off at your door, which you can certainly do at no cost, I would recommend paying for the in-home delivery and setup given the weight. If anything don’t open the box until you get it in your bedroom, an all latex mattress is very unwieldy and is hard to move once opened.

Here’s a picture of the mattress just minutes after unboxing. You can sleep on this mattress immediately since latex doesn’t require any time to come to shape, nor does it off-gas like a memory foam mattress. The latex smell will be more noticeable right after opening but it is not toxic and will go away fairly soon.

100% GOLS Organic Certified Latex

  • We use Dunlop latex in our mattresses because it is more eco-conscious than Talalay latex, which requires more processing. We make our own GOLS organic certified latex from co-owned farmer’s societies in India, operating under the USDA’s National Organic Program. It’s made with ≥95% certified organic latex, the highest possible standard. Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, requires no adhesives to seam it together, and is more durable than Talalay latex. It is processed in a GOLS organic certified facility in India that we also co-own. On our Avocado Latex Mattress, we use three seamless layers of organic latex — 2 inches Contoured Latex in the top comfort layer (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft), 3 inches (D75) in the middle, and 4 inches (D85) at the base. We do not use blended or synthetic latex and there are no seams to break down over time, and no chemical adhesives are used to bind the layers, since our mattress is needle tufted by hand. Plus, our GOLS organic certified latex has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (19.HIN.79546, Hohenstein HTTI) — which requires annual lab testing to ensure no harmful substances are present as a result of processing, to include banned substances, toxic chemicals, pesticides and dyes. To be extra thorough, our latex is even eco-INSTITUT certified, a certification for products fulfilling the strictest requirements on pollutants and emissions following the latest state of the art of international research and science.

100% GOTS Organic Certified Wool

  • The benefits of wool’s complex and natural physio-chemical structure are endless: it wicks away moisture, keeps your mattress smelling fresh, and acts as yet another all-natural fire barrier. It’s breathable — both warm and cool when you need it. Its natural crimp gives it bounce, body and soft support characteristics. And it’s also non-allergenic (ideal for those who suffer allergies to feather and down or synthetic bedding products) and a renewable resource. No additives or synthetics are added to the wool. At Avocado, we add a layer of pure, naturally crimped 100% GOTS organic certified wool (1 ounce per square foot) under the 100% organic certified cotton ticking in every mattress. We do not blend any rayon, polyester or flame retarding chemicals with our wool. Our organic wool has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (19.HIN.68466, Hohenstein HTTI) — which requires annual lab testing to ensure no harmful substances are present as a result of processing, to include banned substances, toxic chemicals, pesticides and dyes.

100% GOTS Organic Cotton

  • For a luxurious and premium finish, we use 100% GOTS organic certified cotton in a soft, natural color. We do not use polyester fiber. Responsibly and ethically sourced from India, this durable textile is needle-tufted by hand with organic cotton yarn rosettes, which secure the cotton ticking and internal mattress layers firmly in place without the use of chemical or water-based chemical adhesives. Our organic cotton has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certification (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI), to ensure no harmful substances are present as a result of processing, to include banned substances, toxic chemicals, pesticides and dyes. Even the green thread used in the stitching and logo embroidery is STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI). Reinforced edge seams are double stitched and four heavy-duty upholstered handles complete the package.

Twin XL 80″ x 38″ x 9″ – 99 lbs
Full 75″ x 54″ x 9″ – 128 lbs
Queen 80″ x 60″ x 9″ – 149 lbs

California King 84″ x 72″ x 9″ – 185 lbs

My Avocado Latex Mattress Findings

The Avocado latex mattress is the firmest of the Avocado mattress lineup. Although latex is a soft, buoyant material, it doesn’t conform or sink as much as memory foam. With this mattress, you rest on top of it. When you add the tufting, it makes it a bit firmer still. The tufting isn’t just for looks though. This is a centuries-old process that is used to keep the material inside together without the use of glue and to provide a more consistent sleep surface. Although the peaks and valleys in the picture below look dramatic, when you lay down on the mattress you don’t feel it.

This mattress has basically no motion transfer either. This is mostly because there are no springs but even with latex you can feel some motion. The tufting also helps limit motion transfer.

Latex is also a temperature neutral material. The holes in the latex make the mattress breathable. You also have a wool fire barrier. Wool naturally regulates temperature and absorbs moisture.

My Avocado Latex Mattress Recommendation

There are many 3 layer latex mattresses on the market right now and they all have very similar construction. Avocado takes things a step further by tufting their mattress to give it a unique feel and performance. People looking for a firmer mattress with no motion transfer will enjoy sleeping on this. It’s also an excellent choice for heavy people. Latex is a very durable material and this mattress should hold up much longer than a spring or memory foam mattress and so the extra cost is justified although among latex mattresses this is still a very aggressively priced mattress. Also, when you add the 1 year trial period it’s an excellent value. You get to sleep on it for a year before deciding if you want to keep it, if not, it’s a free return so you aren’t out any money.  You also get a 25-year limited warranty should you decide to keep it.

These mattresses, celebrated for their durability, cooling properties, and sustainable credentials, are fast becoming a household favorite. But Avocado isn’t the sole player in this game. We take a closer look at the top all-latex mattresses that match, if not rival, the Avocado benchmark.

1. PlushBeds Botanical Bliss

Core Features:

  • Multiple layers of ARPICO organic latex.
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool.
  • Customizable firmness by interchanging internal layers.

Comparative Insight: The Botanical Bliss offers a similar organic pedigree with its focus on certified materials. The ability to manually adjust firmness levels by rearranging the latex layers provides an edge in personalization.

2. Saatva Zenhaven

Core Features:

  • Dual-sided firmness using Talalay latex.
  • Organic cotton cover coupled with New Zealand wool.
  • Antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites.

Comparative Insight: While Avocado champions Dunlop latex, Saatva’s Zenhaven sings praises for Talalay latex. The Zenhaven’s flippable design ensures sleepers get two firmness options in a single purchase, enhancing versatility.

3. Sleep On Latex Pure Green Mattress

Core Features:

  • Natural Dunlop latex composition.
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and GOLS certified.
  • Available in soft, medium, and firm variants.

Comparative Insight: Mirroring Avocado’s commitment to purity and organic materials, Sleep On Latex’s Pure Green Mattress is a testament to simplicity and performance. Its straightforward design and certifications make it a direct competitor.

4. Naturepedic EOS Classic

Core Features:

  • Modular design offering customization.
  • Blend of organic latex, cotton, and wool.
  • GOTS, GOLS, and MADE SAFE certified.

Comparative Insight: The EOS Classic stands out with its modular approach, allowing users to tailor their sleep experience by selecting preferred materials and firmness levels. The added layer of certifications ensures that it’s in the same league as Avocado when it comes to organic credibility.

5. Birch Living Birch Mattress

Core Features:

  • Talalay latex with hydro-cooled wool layers.
  • GREENGUARD Gold and GOTS certified.
  • Eco-friendly production and sustainable sourcing.

Comparative Insight: Though slightly leaning towards a hybrid design, the core of the Birch Mattress is still its Talalay latex layer. Paired with organic wool, it offers a cooling and supportive experience, keeping it in contention with the Avocado Latex Mattress.

Final Thoughts: The Avocado Latex Mattress may be a trailblazer in the organic bedding market, but it’s clear that there are formidable contenders sharing the spotlight. As consumers look to make greener choices, the proliferation of these high-quality all-latex mattresses ensures they’re spoilt for choice. Whether it’s the purity of materials, certifications, or customizable experiences, brands are pushing boundaries, making sustainable sleep accessible to all.

  1. Ben, thanks for another great review. I’m very interested in the Avocado Latex mattress, but have some reservations. Noting the construction of the 2″ top layer of latex…’convoluted latex waves’, what’s your opinion of the durability of these ‘wave peaks’ that are laser cut into this fairly thin layer of latex. From an engineering stand point, it looks to me like these wave peaks could be a weak point of possible failure (tearing or breaking off), seeing as this thin top layer will have to take all of the initial stress of weight and movement. I understand the claimed benefits of doing this, but will these benefits last as long as a solid piece of 2″ latex and what happens to the support if a sufficient number of these wave peaks fail. I would have preferred them using a solid 2″ top layer. Any thoughts? Jim

  2. Thanks for the review! Yours is the only one I’ve found so far for the avocado latex mattress.

In a direct comparison between this latex mattress and Avocado’s standard green mattress, do you find one runs cooler?

Avocado says the latex is slightly firmer than the green – does it feel distinctly firmer to you?

I generally stomach or back sleep but occasionally side sleep (5’7”, 140lbs) and prefer somewhat firm mattresses though I can’t place it on a numeric scale – would you recommend one over the other?
