The new Purple mattress models are very similar to the old models in terms of their overall design and construction. However, there are a few key differences:
- Support system: The new Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier models use a support system of pocketed coils, while the old Original Purple model uses a support system of foam. This makes the new hybrid models more durable and supportive, especially for heavier sleepers.
- Firmness levels: The new Purple mattresses come in three different firmness levels (firm, medium firm, and soft), while the old Original Purple model only came in one firmness level (medium firm). This gives consumers more flexibility to choose the mattress that best suits their individual needs.
- Pricing: The new Purple mattresses are generally more expensive than the old models. However, they also offer more features and benefits, such as the hybrid support system and different firmness levels.
Here is a more detailed comparison of the new and old Purple mattress models:
Feature | New Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier | Old Original Purple |
---|---|---|
Support system | Pocketed coils | Foam |
Firmness levels | Firm, medium firm, and soft | Medium firm only |
Price | More expensive | Less expensive |
Overall feel | More supportive and durable | Less supportive and durable |
Overall, the new Purple mattress models offer a number of advantages over the old models, including a hybrid support system, different firmness levels, and a more durable construction. However, they are also more expensive.
Whether or not the new Purple mattress models are worth the extra cost depends on your individual needs and budget. If you are looking for a mattress that is supportive, durable, and comes in a variety of firmness levels, then the new Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier models are a good option. However, if you are on a tight budget, then the old Original Purple model is still a good value.
Purple just launched 3 new mattresses to their line which incorporate their famous purple grid system that gives it a unique feel. So how do these mattresses compare to the original Purple mattress,? Let’s break them down so that you can make the right choice. In short, I recommend giving the original Purple a try first since it’s the most economical and has a great feel overall. The other mattresses offer a thicker grid system and springs which can make the mattress feel plusher.
The reasoning behind the numbers is that they correspond with the depth of the comfort grid system on the mattress. The Purple 2 has 2 inches, the Purple 3 has 3 inches and the Purple 4 has 4 inches of the polymer grid as illustrated below. All of the new Purple mattresses incorporate a spring system as the base layer.
The Original Purple
If you want the full breakdown on the Purple mattress, check out my full Purple Mattress Review. Basically, the Original is the only mattress in the Purple line that does not have springs. It will, therefore, have the least amount of motion transfer and will feel the firmest. I recommend this mattress for back and stomach sleepers while it will still accommodate side sleepers but if you want to go more plush, I would check out the Purple 3 or 4.
Purple 2
Below is a breakdown on the specifications of the Purple 2:
2” Smart Comfort Grid™
The New-School Classic. The bed that started it all—now with some serious upgrades.
- Purple® Smart Comfort Grid™ for body-adaptive relief and support
- 7.5” Responsive Support Coils enhance dynamic pressure relief and spinal alignment
- 2-inch Purple® grid layer is ideal for back sleepers and those who prefer a slightly firmer feel to their mattress
Purple 3
The Purple 3 is sort of the medium feel among the line. It includes a pocket coil system and therefore will have some motion transfer but will be a bit bouncy, something lacking in the original mattress.
Here are the specs as listed on their website:
SUPER DUPER COMFY

3” Smart Comfort Grid™
The Sweet Spot. The zero-compromise compromise. Everybody gets what they want.
- Purple® Smart Comfort Grid™ for body-adaptive relief and support
- 7.5” Responsive Support Coils enhance dynamic pressure relief and spinal alignment
- 3-inch Purple® grid layer is optimal for sleep position changers
- Perfect balance of soft and firm for couples with mixed mattress-feel preferences who share the same bed
Purple 4
The Purple 4 is the plush luxury mattress. you get 4 inches of the gel layer which makes for a really heavy mattress! What I like about this mattress is that you get a plush feel where you will sink in more plus all the benefits of springs. The advantage is that it is still breathable given the grid system.
REALLY, REALLY, RIDICULOUSLY COMFY

4” Smart Comfort Grid™
The Radical Magical. A straight-up scientific marvel. So comfortable, you’ll never want to leave your bed again.

My Purple Mattress Recommendation
Still wondering which Purple is right for you? Don’t worry too much as they all come with a 100 night no pressure guarantee. They will refund your money if you find it’s not right for you within 100 days.
Stomach and back sleepers will like the original purple and if you want some bounce go with the Purple 2.
Side sleepers will like the Purple 3 and 4 while the Purple 4 will be the most plush out of them all.
Purple is also an excellent choice for hot sleepers. The polymer grid which comprises the top layer of the mattress and makes it so unique is also extremely breathable. Air passes right through the top layer which means it won’t trap heat and will keep you temperature neutral all night long.

You didn’t go into detail about which matress is for big vs small ppl.
It all comes down to firmness. The 4 is the softest followed by the 3 then 2 and the original Purple is the firmest.
Thank you for reviewing these options
I am amazed. So expensive and they don’t even include an organic cotton cover. Are they not aware they could tap into a whole other market? They are all about marketing and miss the boat.
They lost me and I am actively looking for a truly non-toxic mattress.
AGREED!
For me
its GOT to be
TRULY non-toxic
or I WALK-xic

The Purple Smart Comfort Grid on top of the mattress stretches and buckles, relying upon covering and sheets accommodating that flexibility. That would not be cotton, no matter how it is woven.
So just by adding coils they can double their price? Not cool man not cool. And that’s what determined on whether I get one or not. Moving on
Can you do a comparison of purple vs Intellibed.
I’ve read that it is organic, with a grid formula of 100%
Food Gade Mineral Oil.
Also that it was developed for medical use for burn victems. And I understand that Mattress Firm will be carrying it so, it can be tried before I buy. Some MF stores have Purple, but not stores near me.
I have seen some reviews stating that the Purple isn’t the best for lightweight sleepers. I saw this before purchasing my Purple 3. I weight 130 and feel the mattress is still very firm even for the 3. I don’t know that going to the 4 will make a huge difference (other than in price) if weight is a factor with this mattress. Thanks for the help!
We purchased a hybrid 2. I feel cold sleeping on it, Can I place something on top of the mattress between the mattress and the bed protector?
Your best bet is to use a mattress pad. Something like this would help retain heat without loosing too much of the contouring:
Seems to me 90% of the magic is in the grid system; the base is fairly prosaic.
Do you Sherpas think there’s a chance Purple would sell a mattress topper? They could seal it if they had concerns about the underlying mattress causing moisture or contamination. A topper would be a lot lighter and deliver most of the virtues of the full mattress at a lower price point to a different market.
Dear Yawnder: How would you compare the various Purple mattresses to Molecule mattresses? All of the relevant sleepers move a bit during the night but spend most of their time on their sides. All of the sleepers also care a lot about staying cool.
