Charles P. Rogers Mattress Company is the oldest continuously operating bedding manufacturing and retail company in the United States. It was founded in 1855 by Charles Platt Rogers, an early American industrialist and New York City socialite.

Rogers began his entry into the bed manufacturing business by contracting cots for Public School 135 in the Borough of Manhattan in 1854. In 1855, he opened his first retail location at 384 Hudson Avenue in lower Manhattan, selling fine brass beds, mattresses, and iron beds.

By the 1870s, Rogers was furnishing major New York hotels like the Waldorf-Astoria, St. Regis, and Hotel Manhattan. The company also moved to a larger location at 6th Avenue and 17th Street in Manhattan.

In 1882, Rogers opened a second location in Syracuse, New York. The company continued to grow and expand throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In the 1930s, Rogers began to manufacture innerspring mattresses. The company also introduced a line of bedding products for children.

In the 1990s, Rogers launched its first website, which generated such demand for its mattresses nationally that the company began to sell and ship nationwide and worldwide.

Today, Charles P. Rogers Mattress Company is still headquartered in New York City. The company has three showrooms in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and its products are also available online and at select retailers.

Charles P. Rogers Mattress Company is known for its high-quality, handcrafted mattresses and bedding. The company uses only the finest materials, and its products are backed by a 100-night comfort trial.

Over the years, Charles P. Rogers Mattress Company has earned a reputation for excellence. The company has been featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes.

Charles P. Rogers Mattress Company is a proud American company with a long and distinguished history. The company is committed to providing its customers with the best possible sleep experience.

Overview of the Real Bed

Here’s a video overview of the Real Bed and what I really think of it. This is a heavy mattress, weighing 139 lb.s in a queen size, so I recommend having 2 people to set up, you can go it alone but it’s much easier with help, especially if you need to get it up a flight of stairs, there’s also an option to purchase white glove delivery for an extra $199 where they will set it up in the room of your choice and haul away the packaging. Once you open this mattress, it’s ready to sleep on right away.

Construction of the Real Bed

While this is not an organic mattress, it is made with all-natural material. Cotton, wool, latex, steel springs and some bamboo-derived rayon. It measures 11.5 inches thick so putting sheets on it will be no problem.

My Charles P. Rogers Real Bed Findings

There are no fancy new foams or springs in this mattress, just quality materials, and craftsmanship. While the Real Bed is the Charles P. Rogers bed in a box offering, they offer the same quality you will find in their other mattresses. I am partial to mattress companies that make their own mattresses and certainly this one is no exception given their long track record and consistently high marks from more traditional review publications like Consumer Reports.

Starting with the organic cotton cover, you will find that the mattress is hand-tufted to eliminate the need for glue to hold the latex in place. This gives the mattress a more consistent feel and will prevent you from rolling towards the middle toward your partner at night.

This is a medium-firm mattress. While it feels plush with the latex and tufting, you don’t sink into the mattress all that much because the latex springs to life quickly making it easy to change positions. It also means the mattress is breathable and won’t trap heat like a foam mattress.

This mattress also has excellent edge support. I attribute that to both the springs and latex. Even some hybrid foam mattresses can have poor edge support if they add too much foam to the top layer. That isn’t the case with this mattress.

Here you can see how much by 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. It sunk in about half an inch.

For side sleeping, you get really good lower back support. My hips also felt supports and the mattress didn’t bother my shoulders. As long as you have a pillow with the proper height, should pain shouldn’t be an issue. If you prefer a really plush mattress, you can add the Real Bed Topper which is a 2.5-inch thick pad with latex and nano springs. I have never come across a mattress topper with springs and this would certainly keep the bed from becoming too squishy.

This mattress also performed well for stomach sleeping. If you are a dedicated stomach sleeper you may want something a little firmer though.

real bed stomach sleeping

This mattress really excelled at back sleeping. I don’t normally sleep on my back but if I had to, I would choose this mattress. The Real Bed can be used on an adjustable base. No need for a box spring either, in the picture below it is on a bed from West Elm that has wooden slats.

Final Thoughts on the Real Bed by Charles P. Rogers

For the money, this is one of the best values for a natural mattress. Aside from it being all-natural, it’s just plain comfortable. It comes with a 100-night trial, 25-year warranty with free shipping and returns. The Real Bed strikes the right balance with springs and latex. It has just the right amount of bounce without going overboard with the use of latex. I could tell immediately that There’s a reason why this company has lasted so long and there’s no doubt in my mind that the Real Bed will be a strong player in the bed in a box category for a long time to come.

Exploring the Typical Teenager’s Bedroom in the 80s: A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

80s style bedroom

The 1980s were an exciting time for teenagers in America. The music was loud, the fashion was bold, and the world was changing rapidly. In this era, the bedroom became more than just a place to sleep – it was a personal sanctuary for self-expression and reflection. For teenagers in the 80s, their bedroom was an extension of their personality, where they could escape the pressures of the outside world and be themselves.

What Did a Typical 80s Bedroom Look Like?

A typical teenage bedroom in the 80s was a vibrant and eclectic mix of colors, patterns, and textures. From neon lights to cassette players, from posters of favorite bands to stacks of comic books, everything in the room reflected the teenager’s unique tastes and interests. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what you would typically find in a teenager’s bedroom in the 1980s, from the bed and bedding to the games and toys. Let’s dive in and explore the world of the 80s teenager!

Bed and Bedding

80s bedroom

The bed was the centerpiece of the teenager’s bedroom in the 80s. The most common type of bed was the twin size, often with a metal or wooden frame. Some teenagers had bunk beds to accommodate sleepovers with friends. Bedding designs were bold and colorful, with popular patterns including geometric shapes, stripes, and polka dots. Floral and paisley prints were also popular for girls’ bedding. Comforters were typically thick and fluffy, often with matching pillowcases and sheets.

Furniture

Teenagers in the 80s had a variety of furniture in their bedrooms. Dressers were often used to store clothing, and some had large mirrors attached to them. Nightstands provided a convenient place to put lamps, alarm clocks, and books. Desks were common, especially for students who needed a space to do homework. Chairs and seating options varied, with some teenagers opting for bean bag chairs or floor cushions for a relaxed and casual vibe.

Electronics

stereo

Electronics were a big part of the typical 80s teenager’s bedroom. Television sets were often bulky and heavy, with smaller screens compared to today’s standards. VCRs were becoming more popular, allowing teenagers to rent and watch movies at home. Stereo systems were also a must-have, with cassette players and large speakers for blasting music. Telephones were another common electronic device, with answering machines becoming more prevalent towards the end of the decade.

Decorations and Posters

Decorations and posters were a crucial part of any teenager’s bedroom in the 80s. Popular posters included images of favorite bands and musicians, as well as movie and TV show posters. Neon lights and lava lamps were also popular, providing a colorful and funky ambiance to the room. Some teenagers had decorative flags, tapestries, or bead curtains hanging on their walls or doorways.

Clothes and Fashion Accessories

Fashion was a big part of the 80s, and teenagers expressed their style through their clothing and accessories. Popular trends for girls included neon-colored leggings, oversized sweaters, and high-waisted jeans. For boys, acid-washed denim, leather jackets, and band t-shirts were popular. Accessories included belts, hats, and jewelry such as hoop earrings and friendship bracelets.

Books, Magazines, and Comics

Reading material was also an essential part of the typical 80s teenager’s bedroom. Popular book series included Sweet Valley High and The Babysitters Club for girls, and Hardy Boys and Goosebumps for boys. Magazines aimed at teenagers, such as Seventeen and Tiger Beat, were popular, featuring articles on fashion, music, and celebrity gossip. Comic books and graphic novels were also widely read, with titles like X-Men, Spider-Man, and Watchmen being popular among teenagers.

Games and Toys

Finally, games and toys were a big part of the typical 80s teenager’s bedroom. Board games and puzzles were a popular way to pass the time, with classics such as Monopoly, Scrabble, and Rubik’s Cube being favorites. Video game consoles were also becoming more prevalent, with the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) being released in the mid-80s. Popular toys included Barbie dolls, My Little Pony, and Transformers.

Bold and colorful, with a mix of technology and vintage charm, the room was a place for teenagers to express themselves and explore their interests. While much has changed since then, the nostalgia and memories of the 80s continue to inspire and influence teenage culture today.

How has the typical teenager’s bedroom changed since the 80s?

While some aspects of the typical teenager’s bedroom remain the same, much has changed since the 80s. Today’s teenagers have access to more advanced technology, with smartphones, laptops, and gaming computers being a common sight in bedrooms. Beds and bedding styles have also evolved, with many teenagers now opting for larger beds and minimalistic bedding designs. Furniture trends have shifted towards more modern and functional designs, with space-saving pieces being popular for small bedrooms.

Fashion trends have also changed, with athleisure and streetwear being popular among today’s teenagers. Social media has also become a significant influence, with teenagers using platforms like Instagram and TikTok to express their personal style and share their interests.

In terms of entertainment, video games have become more advanced and immersive, with virtual reality being a growing trend. Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu have replaced VCRs and cable television, and socializing has shifted towards online communication rather than face-to-face interactions.

Despite the changes, the teenage bedroom remains a crucial space for self-expression and individuality. While the technology and fashion trends may change, the desire for a personal sanctuary remains constant among teenagers.

The typical teenager’s bedroom in the 80s was a unique and vibrant space that reflected the culture and trends of the time. From bold bedding designs to popular video game consoles, everything in the room was a reflection of the teenager’s personality and interests. While much has changed since then, the teenage bedroom remains a crucial part of growing up and discovering one’s identity. As technology and fashion trends continue to evolve, it will be exciting to see how the teenage bedroom continues to change and adapt.

  • Slumberland Furniture also offers a lease-to-own option through Progressive Leasing. With this program, customers can make weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly payments over a period of 12 months to pay off their purchase.

Financing options can be a great way to make a large furniture purchase more manageable, but it’s important to read and understand the terms and conditions of the financing plan before applying.
