Hyphen sent me their mattress free for review. What sets the Hyphen mattress apart from many of the mattress-in-a-box offerings is that they have their own mattress factory. This offers many advantages but I think the best advantage is that they can keep costs down and experiment more to get it right. They claim to have created over 1,000 different test beds while trying to perfect the Hyphen mattress. Below are my findings.
Ordering the Hyphen Mattress
Ordering from Hyphen is very straightforward and is done via their website. They have chat functionality so you can chat with a real person if you have any questions about the product. The mattress should arrive in about a week after placing your order and will arrive in a box. Below is what the box will look like.
Specifications and Construction of the Hyphen Mattress
They Hyphen is constructed as follows:
2” 3.5lb custom formulated Hyphen Foam comfort layer
2” 2.0lb buoyant transition layer
6” 1.8lb orthopedic support base
According to Hyphen, additional features include 2 layers of antimicrobial protection, built-in to both the Hyphen Foam layer and the mattress cover itself. This protects against dust mites and other allergens, as well as illness causing bacteria and viruses.
My Hyphen Findings
Here’s a video to illustrate how the layers of the Hyphen mattress react:
You’ll notice that the top layer, the Hyphen Foam layer was designed to be responsive like latex giving you a quick recover and but also will sink and contour more than latex so you kind of get the best of both worlds.
Below is a picture to illustrate sinkage:
Below is a video that illustrated how it will react:
Here it is again in real time:
Finally the Hyphen was designed to keep you cool as well as comfortable. According to Hyphen they do this in 4 ways:
- Open cell memory foam, which is fairly standard among new memory foam mattresses.
- Ventilated top layer of Hyphen foam. You can see the holes in the foam top layer in the video.
- Infused copper which is starting to become more popular among foam mattresses. Copper is highly conductive which helps draw heat away from your body.
Dual-point phase change. This means it works with your body so that you don’t get too hot or too cold. Some mattresses can focus too much on cooling which then becomes uncomfortable.
My Hyphen Mattress Recommendation
The Hyphen mattress is a little on the softer end of the spectrum and is a great choice for people that don’t want too much hug in their mattress but still want good pressure relief. I appreciate the responsiveness of the mattress, especially since this is an all foam mattress. The company chose the name “Hyphen” because it is used in grammar as a link. This mattress is the link between the worlds of night and day.

My god! This proliferation of mattress brands reminds me of the days when about a thousand websites offered free email. Most of those site were gone in a year, maybe two. How realistic is it that even 20 percent of these brands exist 2 to 4 years from now? And how many new brands will there be in the next 6 months? 10? 20? 30? Most of them to die quick deaths over the next few years.
Don’t take this as a complaint. The industry is in an upheaval and some good brands will rise above the others and remain around, upping their game because of the competition. So this should be good for the consumer in the long run.
It’s interesting that your homepage features a huge number of top brands, but this is in conjunction with the remainder of your site containing reviews of brand after brand after brand, none seeing the light of day unless one browses your site page by page (or at least I couldn’t find an index of all mattresses reviewed). It’s almost as if you’re already throwing half of the brands into the wind, never to be seen again.
What do you think of this mattress compared to the Leesa?
They are very similar in feel. I don’t think you can go wrong with either!
How would you compare the Hyphen mattress to the Love and Sleep mattress? I’m trying to decide between the two. The Hyphen seems to have more bounce, but everything else seems very similar.
The Love and Sleep has two different firmness options. I only tested the soft version of the Love and Sleep which is considerably softer than the Hyphen. The Hyphen has better edge support than the Love and Sleep and in my opinion sleeps just a little cooler.
Would you recommend one over the other for a mostly side and sometimes back sleeper? I know it’s subjective, but did either one have a better feel to you personally?
I think the Hyphen is just a tinch softer so it may be a little better for side sleepers.
Thanks so much for the info, you’ve been really helpful! I appreciate it and all the hard work you put into the website and reviews.
Year 6 with the Hyphen as a side sleeper over 225lbs its been amazing. Cover is still in great shape and mattress has no issues. For a side sleeper I barely move anymore. Great variable support at feet knees hips and shoulders. Use this with a TemperPedic side pillow (get the cool version only-you will hate the other one) but I see Hyphen has a pillow so I may try that.
FYI: No true offgasing but I let it sit 24 hours as recommended. FYI Yawnder you recommended this one to me in November 2016! You’re still the best!
