Brooklinen Down Pillows – Are They Worth It?

Three Brooklinen Pillows are stacked against a plain gray background. Two pillows are laid flat on the bottom, and the third pillow is balanced upright on top of them.

While Brooklinen down pillows are not necessarily unique in every aspect, they do offer some specific features and qualities that distinguish them from some competitors: Multiple Firmness Options: Unlike many brands that only offer standard down pillows, Brooklinen provides three firmness options (plush, mid-plush, and firm) to cater to different preferences and sleeping styles. Best Down Pillows

Cuddledown

There are many reasons why people love down pillows! Here are a few of the most common:

    • Unmatched softness and comfort: Down is made up of the softest feathers from ducks and geese, making it incredibly fluffy and gentle against the skin. It feels like you’re sinking into a cloud, which can be incredibly relaxing and luxurious.
    • Adaptable support: Down pillows conform to your head and neck shape, providing personalized support throughout the night. This can help to improve sleep quality and reduce neck pain.
    • Warmth and breathability: Down is a natural insulator, so it can help to keep you warm in the winter. However, it’s also surprisingly breathable, so it won’t make you feel too hot in the summer. This makes down pillows a versatile option for all seasons.
    • Durability: Down pillows can last for many years with proper care. They’re also relatively easy to clean, as they can be machine-washed and dried on a low heat setting.
    • Luxury feel: There’s no denying that down pillows feel like a luxury. They’re often associated with hotels and spas, and they can make your bed feel extra cozy and inviting.

Of course, down pillows aren’t for everyone. Some people find them too soft or fluffy, while others may be allergic to feathers. They can also be more expensive than other types of pillows.

But if you’re looking for a pillow that’s soft, comfortable, and supportive, a down pillow is definitely worth trying. You just might find that you love it!

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when choosing a down pillow:

    • Fill power: This is a measure of the down’s loft and insulating ability. Higher fill powers indicate a fluffier and more luxurious pillow.
    • Thread count: The thread count of the pillowcase will affect how soft and breathable it feels. A higher thread count is generally better.
  • Size: Down pillows come in a variety of sizes, so choose one that’s the right size for your bed and sleeping position.

Down pillows have always been regarded for their plush and light feel, which is significantly different from feather or memory foam pillows. Down pillows feel luxurious and have a greater appeal than any other type of pillow. From a range of softness to colors to fill power, down pillows come in an endless number of options. It isn’t surprising when buyers have a hard time differentiating one option from the others. Therefore, it is so important to conduct proper research before going in to purchase a down pillow.

Let’s look at the features and benefits of a down pillow.

Material

Down pillows are filled with the back, chest, and wing feathers of geese and ducks. This isn’t the same type of feathers that are used to make feather pillows. Down pillows are softer than regular feather pillows because they are made with softer feathers. Most people think that ducks and geese are the same. However, there’s a big difference between the two types of down feathers.

Duck down is more readily available and cheaper than geese down. Ducks aren’t necessarily cold-climate birds, so their feathers aren’t as soft or thick as that of geese. Most cheap down pillows are usually stuffed with duck down.

On the other hand, geese are cold climate birds, much bigger than ducks and with larger down clusters. Geese down is considered higher in quality because of their softness and plush feel and is also more expensive than duck down.

Whether you choose duck or geese down, they are always made of natural materials. Unlike foam or polyester pillows, down pillows can be re-cased if they lose shape. Like other pillows, down pillows also come in various densities and sizes.

Fill power

Measured in cubic inches, fill power is referred to the amount of space inside the pillow that one ounce of down occupies. The higher the fill power, the better the quality of the down and the longer the durability. A down pillow with a higher fill power is also more expensive.

The lowest fill power is 600 cubic inches. These are the cheapest pillows with the smallest down clusters and are usually on the firmer side. If you want a firm down pillow, the one with a lower fill power is a good choice. However, it will have to be replaced frequently.

Most budget down pillows have a fill power of 700 cubic inches. They are neither too soft nor too firm and have moderate durability. If you want premium down pillows, then the 800 and above cubic inches of fill power is what you should get. The large down clusters make them light and soft, with a higher loft and excellent durability. A premium down pillow will last for years without losing its shape or softness.

Pros and Cons

Down pillows may be soft and luxurious, but they have their own benefits and downsides. Some of their advantages are:

Softness

Down pillows are highly regarded for their softness and plush feel. If you are someone who wants a soft pillow without sacrificing support should get a down pillow.

Support

Down pillows are good for those who have neck pain, because of their excellent support. They contour to the shape of the sleeper, supporting the head and neck and preventing the wrong posture.

Durability

If you buy a high quality down pillow, they last for years without needing to be recased. Even if they need to be recased, they easily last for at least eight years, which is longer than any regular pillow.

Some of the downsides of down pillows are:

Allergies

Since they are made from duck or geese feathers, down pillows are known to cause allergies. If you are sensitive to feathers, then down pillows may not be good for you.

Low Loft

Down pillows have no height at all. They are low, and also lose their shape pretty easily. If you prefer a higher loft, consider something other than down or go for a lower fill power for firmness.

Expensive

Premium down pillows are several times more expensive than regular pillows. However, if you aren’t allergic, don’t mind the low loft, and can afford the steep price, down pillows are some of the best options on the market.

Goose down is the best bedding material for a number of reasons:

  • Warmth: Goose down is an excellent insulator, meaning it traps heat well. This makes it ideal for bedding, especially during the winter months.
  • Lightweight: Goose down is also very lightweight, so it won’t weigh you down while you sleep.
  • Breathable: Goose down is also breathable, so it won’t trap too much heat and make you sweat.
  • Durable: Goose down is a durable material that can last for many years with proper care.
  • Hypoallergenic: Goose down is hypoallergenic, meaning it is unlikely to cause allergic reactions.

In addition to these benefits, goose down is also a natural and sustainable material. Geese are raised for their meat and eggs, and the down is a byproduct of these industries.

Of course, goose down is also a more expensive bedding material than some other options, such as synthetic down or feathers. However, many people believe that the extra cost is worth it for the superior comfort and warmth that goose down provides.

Here is a comparison of goose down to other bedding materials:

The Pillow Guy Goose Down Pillow is yet another item part of an incredible line of products from the clever brand Pillow Guy. I received and reviewed free one of their items in the past and was pretty impressed with their Down Alternative Pillow so naturally, I had very high expectations of their Down Pillow. This is a company that targets its items towards men who consider themselves gentlemen and who pride themselves on their good taste.

Overview of the Pillow Guy Goose Down Pillow

While the Pillow Guy only has two pillow types in their inventory, the choice to keep it simple is wise in their case. Their Goose Down pillow comes in two densities, soft and overstuffed. Their pillows are crafted with 100% Certified RDS (Responsible Down Standard) 650 fill power White Goose Down. They’re encased in a down-proof cotton shell and then wrapped in their gorgeous white sateen cover that comes with stunning blue satin piping. The cover has a hidden zipper and truly feels like something a 5-star hotel would supply their guests (and should).

Unlike the Down Alternative pillow, Pillow Guy’s Goose Down Pillow is not made from a synthetic material so there’s quite a process involved in trying to ensure that they’re providing the most desirable product on the market. Their Goose Down Pillows are 100% Certified RDS (Responsible Down Standard) but for those that want further clarification on what that means, the information below is quoted directly from the official RDS website, which can be found at http://responsibledown.org.

Any removal of down and feathers from live birds (live-plucking or molt-harvesting) is prohibited

Force-feeding is prohibited

Holistic respect for animal welfare of the birds from hatching to slaughter

RDS down and feathers is properly identified; to ensures that non-RDS down and feathers are not mistakenly identified as RDS

Each stage in supply chain is audited by a professional, third party certification body

Only products with 100% certified down and feathers carry the RDS logo

If you want to read more about how RDS works, there is more information towards the bottom of the home page on their official site. That’s where they discuss the certification process in further detail.

Another aspect that I really like about these pillows is that they’re priced accordingly. Because Goose Down is a limited resource, it can be costly, which is why I appreciate the fact that their soft pillow, the one with less filling, actually costs less. Not every company is so honest but I believe that the Pillow Guy is and this is just one indication.

One thing I found interesting about this pillow is how different it was in terms of density between the soft and overstuffed pillow. With the Down Alternative pillows this was quite evident but I think that with the Goose Down pillows they’ve drawn the gap a little bit closer. I think this is a positive aspect actually, considering it’s Goose Down which can lose it’s loft over time. This however can be remedied. Down pillows just require their own maintenance in order for them to last long.

My Pillow Guy Down Pillow Recommendation

The Pillow Guy has created another top notch item that they can be proud to have in their inventory. While there is no doubt that I’m a fanatic of their advertising and would love to meet their marketing person, their products make it clear that their money is invested in far more than just their advertising. I rate this pillow an A+.

Goose Down

Down’s journey into fluffy pillow heaven has been quite long and interesting! Here’s a glimpse into its history: Early beginnings: 7,000 BC: While not filled with down, the first “pillows” appeared in Mesopotamia, made of stone to keep insects away. Ancient Egypt: Pharaohs enjoyed wooden headrests for a more luxurious sleep. Ancient Greece: Straw and feathers, including down, started appearing in pillows, bringing … Read more
