Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

Do you stay awake for a long time after going to bed at night? Do you prefer to go to bed later than usual and sleep in the next morning? If yes, then you could be suffering from a dysregulation of your biological clock, also called the circadian rhythm. There are different names given to the dysregulation of the circadian rhythm. One of them is delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD).

Disorders like DSPD often go undiagnosed, considering that a large section of the young population suffers from the condition. Adolescents and teens are more likely to have DSPD when they call themselves night owls and prefer to sleep in the morning. Too often, when a person strays from his normal biological clock for a long time, it gets harder to return to the normal circadian rhythm.

What causes DSPD?

Although the exact cause is unclear, researchers believe that genetics has a role to play in DSPD. The disorder usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood and disappears after a few years. Very few adults have been found to suffer from chronic DSPD.

DSPD happens, partly, due to a genetic mutation. It is the opposite of advanced sleep phase disorder (in which the person goes to bed and wakes up earlier than normal). People with DSPD usually go to bed in the early morning, between 1 am, and 4 am, and awaken later in the morning, between 8 am and 11 am. This is more common among socially active people, who feel more energetic during the evenings and late nights. In fact, those who burn the midnight oil and do not maintain the biological sleep cycle are a high risk of getting this disorder.

If DSPD exists alone with no other sleep disorder, people usually manage to get adequate sleep no matter when they get to bed. People generally stick to the late sleeping scheduling if it does not interfere with normal life.

If the person can make it to school or work on time, and still get enough sleep every night, it signifies that DSPD is not interfering with daily routines. In such cases, it may be advised to maintain the routine, as the circadian rhythm disorder might not be harmful.

Difference between DSPD and insomnia

Circadian rhythm disorders are often confused with insomnia, but they are very different from each other. People with circadian rhythm disorders like DSPD have a sleep schedule that may not be typical, but they do manage to get adequate sleep. People with insomnia, on the other hand, cannot fall asleep at any time during the day or night and fail to get adequate sleep.

Symptoms of Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

The characteristics of DSPD distinguish it from other sleep disorders. Some of the symptoms are:

People with DSPD have a higher ability to sleep during the daytime, compared to those with a normal sleep schedule or those with insomnia. While normal people do not feel sleepy during the morning or afternoon, people with DSPD are able to sleep soundly even the sun is shining.

People with DSPD manage to fall asleep around the same time every night (or day), and if the person goes to bed around the time they feel sleepy, they find it easy to fall asleep rapidly. Children and adolescents with DSPD do not want to go to bed until they are sleepy, but the bedtime struggles disappear if they are allowed to stay up until the time they usually fall asleep.

People with DSPD usually sleep well when they are allowed to follow their own sleep schedule. They fall into a rhythm and often make up for lost sleep on weekends and during vacations.

DSPD is a chronic disorder whose symptoms must be present for at least three months at a stretch before a diagnosis can be made.

Severity of DSPD

Like most sleep disorders, DSPD is also classified according to severity. They are:

Mild: When the condition is ‘mild,’ there is usually a two-hour delay (compared to the normal sleep routine) in falling asleep, with little to no social or occupational disruption.

Moderate: The condition is moderate when there is a delay of three hours, with some amount of impairment.

Severe: The condition is classified as severe when there is a delay of four or more hours with severe social and occupational impairment.

Unlike what is usually thought by those around DSPD patients, this isn’t just a lifestyle problem. People with DSPD are unable to force themselves into a normal sleep routine. Even if they go to bed earlier, they will toss and turn until the time when they can naturally fall asleep.

Before seeking medical help, they usually try to change their sleeping schedule that would help them fall asleep earlier. Most of these methods are a failure in bringing about any change. Things like sleeping aids, alcohol, reading, and meditation aren’t usually successful. People with DSPD who tried using sleeping pills to fall asleep sooner report that it only makes them tired and relaxed, but not sleepy.

Treatment for Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

There is no proper treatment method for DSPD, and doctors usually resort to a combination of methods to treat DSPD. The most common method is to gradually scale back the sleeping times of the patient until the desired timeframe is achieved. Once a proper has been achieved, it should be strictly maintained. This method is shown to be effective but must be very rigidly followed, because the new routine will fail if the person stays up until late even one day.

There are a few other methods too that are applied to treat circadian rhythm disorders. One of them is bright light therapy, in which the person is exposed to bright lights during early morning hours shortly after waking up while avoiding bright outdoor light during the evening hours. This has been shown to readjust the sleep-wake routine.

Delayed sleep phase disorder is not really a problem with most people. As long as the person gets the desired amount of sleep, there is no need for treatment. However, a doctor may be consulted if DSPD starts to interfere with daily life.

Target wins Christmas in the microfiber category. Are you sensing a “pattern” here? That’s right when it comes to Christmas no need to be subtle. These sheets scream Christmas and they are super soft right out of the packaging. Normally I don’t recommend microfiber sheets as they seem to break down after about 7-10 washes but since these are for holidays they won’t get that much use anyway. Also, you can get a queen set for $24.99

Pottery Barn always seems to land sweet licensing deals. This year you can get a Peanuts Christmas themed bedding set which includes not only sheets but duvet cover and/or quilt.

Continuing on the Peanuts theme, Vermont Country Store upped the ante with a flannel set of Peanuts sheets which seems to have more vivid colors than the Pottery Barn offering. These are 100% flannel cotton sheets made in Portugal. They are currently retailing from $79.95-119.95

The construction needs to be different or at least should be different on a thicker topper because if you don’t have a dense foam support base, you will lose alignment and sink into the topper too much.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Findings

As always, Amazon will deliver your mattress topper lightning fast since it is Amazon prime eligible. I received mine in 2 days and it arrived in a compact box. Note that the topper was not shrink wrapped but it was wrapped. That may be different with the 4 inch topper though.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Recommendation

Mattress toppers are good if your mattress is structurally sound underneath. A mattress topper cannot solve issues with a sagging mattress or a mattress that just doesn’t give you proper support. What it can do though is soften it up a bit to make it more comfortable and to extend the life of your existing mattress.

I particularly like this 2 inch topper because it softened my mattress just a bit more. If you go too thick such as a 4 inch topper you can either make it too soft or lose some of the support that your mattresses was designed for. I think the sweet spot for mattress topper thickness is between 2-3 inches. Going less than 2 inches really doesn’t do much unless you are a really light person.

The box for this 2 inch topper from Zinus was small enough where if I wanted to return it, it would be fairly easy to do and since the topper didn’t come shrink-wrapped it would be easy enough to get back in the box, unlike compressed mattress or topper.

In conclusion, if you have a mattress that still gives you proper support but you are just looking to make it a bit softer, definitely check out the Zinus Swirl Gel Foam topper. The peak and valley construction allows for more breathability and feels great!

What Causes Talking in Your Sleep? Have you ever found your partner mumbling in their sleep or your child calling out to you while asleep? It could be somniloquy, also known as sleep talking. It is a sleep disorder that involves talking while asleep without any knowledge of it. Sleep talking can vary from one person to another: it can involve dialogues and monologues, complete gibberish or just mumbling and moaning. Sleep talking affects mostly children and males. It can be a rare, short-term occurrence, or it may require proper diagnosis and treatment. Sleep talking is the result of a confused mental state and can indicate underlying disorders. Although sleep talking is not harmful, it is embarrassing for the person and annoying for other sleeping nearby. It can cause concern in those who have never experienced it, and people may either make fun of the person or stay away from him. As a result, sleep talkers might be afraid to stay overnight away from home or share the room with new people. Sleep talkers seem to be talking to themselves, but sometimes they may also seem to be having the conversation with another person. Sleep talking may not be a regular occurrence. A person may sleep talk infrequently, but when it happens every day, it should be properly evaluated by a doctor. Who Talks In Their Sleep? Anyone can talk in his or her sleep. Many children between the ages three and ten talk to themselves while asleep, and about five percent of adults do the same once they fall asleep. These may not be a regular occurrence and can happen once in a while. Experts think that sleep talking runs in the family. So sleep talking parents might have children with similar patterns. Stages of Sleep Talking When being examined, a sleep talker will be evaluated by the stages of somniloquy. There are four stages of sleep talking, but they can be grouped into two. Stages 1 and 2: In the first two stages, the sleep talker isn’t in very deep sleep. Thus their speech is easier to understand. In these stages, the sleep talker can have entire conversations that make sense. People sharing the bed or the room with the sleep talker might think that the person is awake and having a conversation with someone. However, the sleep talker isn’t aware of this occurrence. Stages 3 and 4: In these stages, the sleep talker is in deeper sleep, making their speech harder to comprehend. The ‘talk’ may vary from mere moaning or mumbling sounds to full-fledged gibberish accompanied by shouting and screaming. Sleep talkers in these stages can be a real annoyance for the people around. Sleep talkers can be broadly classified into these two groups. Sleep talking can either take place at the beginning of sleep or in a deep sleep. In either case, the person has no memory of the occurrence. Severity of Sleep Talking The healthcare practitioner will determine the severity of the condition by understanding how frequently it occurs. As mentioned earlier, sleep talking may or may not happen regularly. Therefore, when being evaluated by a doctor, the severity and frequency of the occurrence should be taken into account. There are three types of severity. Mild: The condition is classified as ‘mild’ when sleep talking happens less than once a month. Moderate: The condition is classified as ‘moderate’ when sleep talking occurs once a week, but not regularly, and does not affect the others in the room. Severe: The condition is classified as severe when sleep talking occurs every night and interferes with the sleep of others in the room. Possible Causes of Sleep Talking There is no solid evidence as to what causes sleep talking. Experts claim that sleep disorders like sleep apnea, night terrors, and somnambulism (sleepwalking) are possible triggers for somniloquy. Since the talking can happen at any stage of sleep, it is not clear if sleep talking has any connection with dreaming. Sleep talking could be a sign of more serious disorders. REM sleep disorder (a type of parasomnia) and night terrors are two of the most causes found to be associated with sleep talk. Both of these disorders usually involve screaming, thrashing about, and kicking. People suffering from REM sleep disorder may also violently shout or act out dreams. Sometimes, nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder (where a person eats while asleep) can also be responsible for sleep talking. Other possible causes include severe emotional stress, trauma, fever, reaction to medications, and substance abuse. Treatment of Sleep Talking Somniloquy doesn’t have any treatment, so the doctor will talk to the sleep talker to find out if there are any underlying causes of the condition. Even though sleep talking isn’t harmful if the occurrences are too violent or loud or start suddenly. Since the person himself isn’t aware of these occurrences, he has to talk to his partner, roommate, or other family member to find out the severity of the condition. The doctor will try and find out if there is any other condition that is causing the sleep talking. In some cases, sleep tests, such as a sleep study or sleep recording (polysomnogram), may be suggested. The doctor will also want to know if the person is on any medication, has a history of trauma, or gets enough rest. How to Minimize Sleep Talking Even though cannot be predicted and there is no treatment either, there are steps a person can take to minimize the occurrences. These include:

Avoiding stressful situations and triggers that can disturb sleep and cause somniloquy
Getting enough sleep every night
Avoiding heavy meals close to bedtime
Keeping track of medications and reactions to them
Avoiding alcohol or caffeinated drinks

Sleep talking isn’t a serious condition as long as it isn’t interfering with the sleep of others. If someone suddenly starts sleep talking after age 25, it needs medical attention. If sleep talking is mild to moderate, then roommates or partners could try using earplugs or white noise to drown out the talking.

My Spoon Sleep Findings

Overall I found this mattress to be more of a medium firm feel. You definitely get good support from the foam pillars underneath.

Here’s a video that shows how each layer responds to pressure.

I also poured some water on the top of the mattress to test the water resistant cover. True to claims, it beaded quickly and stayed that way for a while. This made it easy to clean up without the water setting in.

Having a cover like this is nice because you can get away with not needing a mattress protector. However, if this is for a child that still may be prone to wetting the bed, then I would still add a protector for safety.

I received an individual pillar when I opened the box.

The pillar itself is really firm. Below is a video that shows how quickly it bounces back and this will emulate an inner spring.

The mattress performs about average for heat retention. I think the water proof barrier may make it a bit less breathable than most knit covers I have tested.

As for motion transfer, you do get a little bounce in part from the pillars and also because they don’t use as dense of foam on the top layer in comparison to some of the other online brands I have tried.

Mattresses are expensive. Whether you are buying a regular mattress or a bed-in-a-box, you are not only investing a lot of money into it, but also expecting it to offer value for money. But to be able to offer full value for your money, the mattress has to last. So how long exactly does a mattress last?

Unfortunately, there is no one answer to this. The lifespan of a mattress varies depending on the type of mattress, quality of material, kind of use and care. By lifespan we mean how long the mattress can retain most of its original support and comfort. In case you didn’t know, the lifespan of a mattress affects us in a number of ways. A recent research on back pain found that worn-out mattresses can make the condition worse, while another research by the Oklahoma State University found sleep quality to be better when an old mattress is replaced with a new one.

What is the average lifespan of a mattress?

Mattresses usually last long enough before needing to be replaced. Depending upon the material, some mattresses may wear out sooner than others. However, when the mattress is made of high quality material, it tends to last anywhere between 7 and 10 years, and proper care can increase its lifespan well beyond ten years. Mattresses should usually be replaced every ten years if they get worn out.

Numerous factors contribute to the lifespan of a mattress, such as its construction, materials used, usage patterns, and maintenance. Higher-quality mattresses made with durable materials and superior craftsmanship tend to last longer than their lower-quality counterparts. There are several factors that influence mattress longevity. They are:

Use: The more a mattress is used, the shorter it will last. Similarly, mattresses that are occasionally used (like a guest bed) will have a longer lifespan. The types of activities the mattress is used for also determine its lifespan to a certain extent. For instance, putting heavy objects on the bed can make it sag sooner than normal. Spilling food or drink on the bed can also weaken the material and shorten the lifespan of the mattress.

Weight: The pressure applied on a mattress affects its lifespan. Heavier people exert more pressure on a mattress, leading to sinkage and sagging, whereas lighter people exert less pressure, extending the lifespan of a mattress.

You’re Not Sleeping Well: One of the most telltale signs is a decline in the quality of your sleep. If you’re tossing and turning throughout the night or waking up tired and achy, your mattress might not be offering the support and comfort you need. Everyone has an occasional restless night, but if it becomes a consistent pattern, it’s time to consider a new mattress.
Visible Signs of Wear and Tear: Over time, a mattress can develop visible signs of aging like lumps, sagging, or even springs poking through the surface. My Eight Sleep Pillow Findings

This pillow should have broad appeal. When you sleep on the shredded foam side, it feels like a down pillow. I found it to have a good amount of loft for side sleeping. I have broad shoulders and this still supported my head adequately. People with smaller frames can take out the the memory foam layer or the other shredded foam layer to reduce the loft.

If you prefer more of a solid memory foam feel, you can just flip the pillow to the side which has the solid piece of memory foam for a firmer feel.

My Eight Sleep Pillow Recommendation

I think Eight sleep has done a good job of striking a balance between a traditional and foam pillow feel. People interested in trying a foam pillow but are still attached to the feel of a traditional down or even polyester feel will be able to easily adapt to this one.

This pillow is very breathable and light for a memory foam pillow. Also with a 30 day trial, it’s definitely worth trying. Most companies will design their pillows to work well with their mattress and this one is no exception. This pillow works great with the compliment of mattresses offered by Eight sleep. Just like this pillow, their mattresses incorporate next generation memory foam that is responsive and more breathable so pairing the two will give you a consistent feel from head to toe.

My room at the Langham was $500 per night which is very pricey so I was expecting the accomodations to live up to the price tag. Here’s a picture of the room.

My room had a king size bed with a 55 inch tv. There’s a mini bar along with a Nespresso machine. I don’t normally drink espresso but since this is such a fancy hotel, I think it calls for it.

Near the desk you get a terminal to connect your computer to the TV via HDMI, etc. which is awesome if you want to stream Netflix from your computer.

The bathroom is just as fancy. It has a large soaking tub and separate shower. You also get Chuan Spa shampoo, conditioner and soap. The Chuan Spa is located on the 4th floor of the hotel

Having a soaking tub can really help with your sleep experience as it helps you relax before bedtime.

If a bath isn’t your thing, you can head down to the pool and hot tub to relax a bit. The pool is gorgeous and has great views of the city.

The Langham Hotel Mattress

My Bed at the Langham wasn’t anything super special. I found it to be a bit firm. According to the Tag, it is a Beautyrest mattress. Here’s a picture of the bed itself.

The sheets weren’t anything special either but that’s to be expected for all hotels as they are constantly washed for new guests and they cycle through sheet much faster than you would in your home.

I was heartened to see that the mattress had a mattress protector around it to keep bed bugs out and even a tamper proof lock.

The pillows that come on your mattress are varied. I believe some are down but others are simply a polyester fill. You get an extra pillow in the closet which I found to be a polyester fill pillow.

I only stayed one night at the langham. Here are some things to keep in mind regarding my sleep experience.

Pros

The room was quiet despite being in the middle of the city. You can still hear occasional sirens and horns but overall it was a quiet experience after I turned on my whitenoise app on my phone.

The curtains kept the room dark. Dark enough for me to sleep in until 9am without being woken up by sunlight.

The rooms are very clean and spacious. The ceilings are higher than why you would typically find making the space feel bigger too.

A soaking tub made me relaxed and helped me to fall asleep sooner.

There are control panels next to the nightstands where you can turn off and on lights in varous rooms. No need to fidget for a switch

The HVAC is quiet and the thermostat is intuitive.

Cons

There are lots of ambient lights in the room when you turn of the lights proper. Such as led lights from the cable tv box and even the lights from the control panel next to the night stand are a little too bright for me.

The mattress is a bit too firm for me as a side sleeper and someone who prefer as softer mattress overall.

I was a little underwhelmed by the polyester spare pillow. However you can ask for a memory foam or even a lavender infused pillow to be brought up to your room.

Our room came with a Bose sound wave speaker but the bluetooth connector was missing the charger so I couldn’t use it to broadcast whitenoise which would have also helped.

My Langham Hotel Recommendation

Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Langham. I would have like to use the Bose radio and a softer mattress would have helped me get a better sleep but the cleanliness and beauty of the hotel along with a nice bath really made me relax. It’s in a great spot for walking to major tourist attractions.

People that want to sleep on a firmer mattress will definitely enjoy this hotel while side sleepers or anyone who craves a softer sleep experience may want to look elsewhere.

What is Micro Sleep and is it Good for You?

Microsleep Have you ever woken up to your name being called, only to realize you had dozed off at the meeting? If you answered yes, you may have experienced microsleep. It is a short burst of unintended sleep that often occurs without the person’s realization. Although microsleep can be experienced by anyone, it is more common among people who work odd hours, are sleep deprived, or have a sleep disorder like insomnia or sleep apnea. Such brief episodes of unexpected sleep are often the cause of road accidents and other mishaps. It is important to note that microsleep is not the same thing as a power nap. What exactly is microsleep? Microsleep can be best described as a brief, unintended period of loss of attention, often associated with blank stares or eye closure when trying to stay awake during a monotonous task like listening to a lecture or watching TV. This happens the most when the person is tired and sleepy yet trying to perform normal activities. One of the most common consequences of insomnia, microsleep often turns to be dangerous and even fatal. The duration of a microsleep is anywhere between a fraction of a second to two minutes. Since microsleep often occurs with the eyes open, the person is not aware that it has happened. In a state of microsleep, even though the eyes are open, the person will fail to respond to information, like seeing a signal or hearing their name being called. Drowsy driving is often the result of microsleep, where the person is not even aware that he has dozed off. When does microsleep happen? Scientists have found that microsleep is most likely to happen at the time of the day when the person is supposed to be sleeping. It could be late at night, early dawn, or mid afternoon hours. The frequency of microsleep increases as the person keeps being sleep deprived and accumulates sleep debt. The more sleep deprived the person is, the more the chances of microsleep happening. Sleep scientists also claim that everyone experiences microsleep when falling asleep. The first fifteen seconds of drifting off to sleep can be called a microsleep episode when the lights in the brain flickers for a while before turning out. What causes microsleep? Even though microsleep episodes can happen to anyone, it is the most common among people who are sleep deprived. It can also occur to people engaged in a routine, monotonous task for a prolonged period. Research has found that during microsleep, parts of the brain fall asleep while other parts stay awake, explaining the selective loss of attention. People with sleep disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea are also at risk. In fact, in several instances, microsleep episodes are used to diagnose sleep disorders. Common sleep disorders that can cause microsleep episodes are:

Sleep apnea, where the individual does not get proper sleep at night because of irregular breathing. Even though people with sleep apnea may get enough hours of sleep, the quality of sleep is affected because of frequent waking up. People with this disorder are at a high risk of microsleep, and also happen to be involved in the highest number of drowsy driving cases.

Excessive daytime sleepiness, where the individual is sleep deprived because of insomnia and struggles to stay awake during the day. This is a well recognized symptom of insomnia.

Warning signs There are ways to recognize and prevent microsleep. You are prone to experience microsleep if you:

Feel excessively sleepy.
Have difficulty keeping your eyes open.
Find your eyelids drooping or closing, have a blank expression, or have to blink to keep your eyes open.
Have difficulty following directions.
Yawn a lot.
Have a foggy memory.
Feel irritable or moody.
Have difficulty driving on track and keep drifting to the side.
Experience head jerks that wake you up.

Consequences of microsleep can range from missing an important lecture or the exit while driving, to car and workplace accidents. It helps to recognize signs and prevent microsleep as best as possible. The following are some of the ways to prevent microsleep:

Avoid driving or working with hazardous machinery when you are sleepy.
Before setting out for a long drive, make sure you get some sleep to avoid feeling drowsy on the road.
Travel with a companion or play upbeat music to remain alert on the road.
In a class or office, fidgeting quietly, engaging in productive conversation and taking breaks to walk around are some of the ways to drive away sleepiness.
Get sufficient sleep every night, and consult a doctor to rule out sleep disorders.
