Foods That Disrupt Sleep: 5 Risky Choices to Avoid

Foods that disrupt Sleep

Foods That Disrupt Sleep: What Should You Avoid?

A good night’s sleep is a universal desire. It rejuvenates the body, clears the mind, and helps us tackle the challenges of the day ahead. However, a significant portion of the population grapples with sleep disorders, whether it’s trouble falling asleep or frequently waking during the night. While we often blame stress, uncomfortable mattresses, or external noise for our sleeplessness, we frequently overlook a crucial factor: the food we consume, especially in the evening.

Certain foods can hinder digestion, amplify discomfort, and disrupt sleep patterns if consumed close to bedtime. If you find yourself tossing and turning night after night, it may be time to reassess your dinner plate. Here’s a list of culprits that can negatively impact your sleep quality.

Caffeine-Rich Drinks and Sleep

Coffee is a well-known source of energy, and while that’s beneficial during the day, it can wreak havoc on your nighttime sleep. Studies illustrate that even coffee consumed six hours before bedtime can compromise the quality of your sleep. The primary offender? Caffeine. Even decaffeinated coffee retains some caffeine, so it’s wise to steer clear of this beverage as the evening approaches.

Tea may seem like a soothing alternative but can similarly impede your sleep. Although it contains less caffeine than coffee, black tea can still keep you alert if consumed before bed. Additionally, its acidic nature can lead to indigestion or acid reflux, further complicating your quest for a restful night.

Sweet Temptations and Sleep Disruption

You might think that indulging in a piece of dark chocolate before bed is harmless, but think again! While chocolate can elevate your mood, it often contains enough caffeine to impact your sleep negatively. If you’re craving a sweet treat, opt for varieties with lower cocoa content, which typically have less caffeine.

Heavy Meals and Sleep Quality

Rich and spicy foods are often appealing, but they can spell trouble when it comes to your nightly rest. Dishes loaded with spices and oils may cause heartburn, indigestion, and discomfort. Eating heavy, spicy meals slows down digestion and can even affect your body temperature. After a large, spicy feast, it’s common to feel uncomfortably warm, further preventing a good night’s sleep.

Alcohol and Sleep Patterns

Many individuals unwind with a glass of wine or a cocktail in the evening, believing it brings relaxation. However, the irony is that alcohol actually disrupts sleep. It heightens brain activity and body temperature, which can lead to restless nights. Research shows that alcohol diminishes both REM sleep and slow-wave sleep (SWS), essential components of restorative rest.

Protein and Sleep Disturbance

Finally, hefty meaty meals close to bedtime can also disrupt sleep due to the time taken for digestion. Heavy meals create a burden on your body, making it difficult for you to relax. While it might be tempting to indulge in a hearty dish during gatherings, consider timing your meals wisely to create space for adequate digestion before heading to bed.

Conclusion: Nourishing Your Sleep

The connection between what you eat and how well you sleep is undeniable. Making informed choices about your evening meals can pave the way for better rest. By avoiding coffee, certain teas, dark chocolate, spicy foods, alcohol, and heavy meats before bedtime, you can significantly enhance the quality of your sleep.

Prioritize lighter, easily digestible foods in the evening to allow your body to wind down naturally. By being mindful of your dietary choices, you’ll create a more conducive environment for restful sleep, allowing you to wake up rejuvenated and ready for another day. Embrace this change to unlock the full potential of your sleep and overall well-being!

Sugar’s Risky Impact on Your Sleep: Sleep Better Tonight!

Sugar and Sleep

Sugar and Sleep: Is Sugar Keeping You From a Good Night’s Rest?

Who doesn’t crave a delicious dessert after dinner? The mere thought can make anyone’s mouth water. However, indulging in that tempting treat often means consuming a hefty dose of added sugar, which can significantly impact your sleep quality. Understanding the connection between sugar and sleep is crucial if you want to wake up feeling refreshed.

How Sugar Affects Your Sleep Quality

Research indicates a striking link between sugar intake and sleep disturbances. Specifically, studies reveal that individuals who consume higher amounts of sugar throughout the day tend to experience more frequent awakenings during the night. It’s not just about waking up; even if you’re not fully conscious, rampant sugar in your system can disrupt deeper phases of your sleep, leaving you feeling fatigued when morning arrives.

A noteworthy investigation by Columbia University found that participants who indulged in sugary foods reported considerably more disruptions in their sleep patterns compared to those who limited their sugar intake. These individuals often described themselves as chronically exhausted, likely due to a preference for lighter, less restorative sleep.

The Energy Crash Dilemma

Have you ever noticed a compelling urge to nap after indulging in a sugary treat? That post-dessert drowsiness can largely be attributed to sugar’s impact on your body. Excessive sugar consumption can lead to a steep drop in energy, primarily due to its dampening effect on orexin cells, which play a crucial role in regulating wakefulness.

To curb those inevitable energy crashes, maintaining steady blood sugar levels is crucial. If you can stabilize your sugar intake, you’ll find that your energy levels remain consistent throughout the day, helping you adhere to a healthier sleep schedule. By gradually reducing your sugar consumption, you are likely to wake up feeling more well-rested and rejuvenated.

Avoiding Refined Sugars for Better Sleep

To enhance your sleep quality, the most critical step is to steer clear of refined sugars. These sugars are notorious for disrupting your blood sugar balance, creating a rollercoaster effect that can impede your sleep. You can find refined sugars in various sources, such as soft drinks, barbecue sauces, sugary breakfast cereals, desserts, fruit juices, and even canned fruits. Surprisingly, refined sugars also lurk in everyday staples like white bread, regular pasta, and white rice.

By replacing these refined foods with whole grains and complex carbohydrates, you not only improve the overall nutritional value of your diet but also promote better sleep patterns. Whole grains can sustain your energy levels more effectively, allowing you to drift into deep, restorative sleep.

The Role of Fiber in Encouraging Deep Sleep

If you’re looking to enhance your sleep while improving your diet, consider this: reducing your sugar intake and increasing your fiber consumption can lead to better sleep quality. Fiber-rich foods contribute to slow digestion and do not trigger the erratic spikes in blood sugar levels that refined carbohydrates often do.

Incorporating foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains into your meals can facilitate the kind of slow-wave sleep that leaves you feeling revitalized. A few modest adjustments in your diet can make a world of difference in how you feel when you wake up.

Final Thoughts

In summary, sugar plays a significant role in your sleep quality. Understanding how sugar impacts your sleep can empower you to make informed dietary choices that lead to better rest. By minimizing refined sugars and increasing your intake of fiber-rich foods, you can significantly enhance your sleep experience.

So, if you’re grappling with sleep issues or chronic fatigue, consider analyzing your sugar consumption. Implementing these small, manageable changes can lead to improved sleep quality and a more energetic day-to-day life. Remember, a better night’s rest could be just a few dietary tweaks away!

Stress and Sleep: What’s the Correlation?

Stress and Sleep

Why Stress Makes You Sleepy

Mr. A and Mr. B both are scared of flying. Before every flight they have to take, they become severely stressed. But their responses to stress are different. While Mr. A spends his time on the flight clutching the armrest for dear life, Mr. B goes off to sleep before takeoff and wakes up after the flight lands. This led Mr. A to wonder, how someone could fall asleep if they were really stressed or scared about something. Wasn’t anxiety and stress supposed to keep you awake and alert? For years, stress has been associated with sleeplessness. The more stressed you are, the less sleep you are going to get. However, recent findings show that stress and sleepiness also go hand in hand. This happens in two ways: Stress is caused when cortisol is produced in excess in the body. This affects the production of serotonin and melatonin, both of which are responsible for sleep and relaxation. When this happens day after day, the natural sleep cycle is affected. Adults who get fewer than eight hours of sleep every night have higher levels of stress compared to those who get at least eight hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep causes an elevation in stress levels, and this leads to a vicious cycle, where the person remains sleep-deprived because of stress, and the lack of sleep feeds the stress. The second reason why stress causes sleepiness is because of the fight-or-flight system. When a person is stressed, there are different coping mechanisms for it. Some tend to get anxious and overwhelmed, while some others simply respond by falling asleep. This is a classic case of the body choosing ‘flight’ over ‘fight’. When the person wakes up from sleep, there is a marked difference, a real chemical change. Sleep makes all the systems in the body relax, letting the tension, anxiety, and the sickness in the pit of your stomach to ease and go away. That’s how we wake up feeling refreshed. While sleep may not always make the stress go away, it does help the brain calm down and feel fresh. Being sleep deprived day after day can take a serious toll on the brain, leading to burnout and even severe illnesses. Therefore, if you have the rare ability to fall asleep when stressed, it is a blessing. Sleep is a natural stress buster and helps the brain relax and lower stress levels. If you find yourself falling asleep when under stressful circumstances, you can either feel good about getting some extra sleep, or try to reduce the stressors in your life so that you sleep well at night and have more energy when you’re supposed to be awake.

Bear Hybrid Mattress: Stunning Comfort for Effortless Sleep

Bear Mattress

Bear Hybrid Mattress Review: A Comprehensive Look

Discover the Bear Hybrid Mattress

The Bear Hybrid Mattress is an innovative blend of spring and foam technology, designed to elevate your sleep experience. Its unique cover, infused with Celliant fibers, is not just for comfort—Celliant has been recognized by the FDA as a medical device capable of converting body heat into FAR Infrared energy, which promotes recovery and restful sleep. With its five-layer construction, the Bear Hybrid offers a luxurious feel, significantly enhancing your sleep compared to the all-foam version of the Bear Mattress.

Affordable Luxury: Pricing for the Bear Hybrid Mattress

Exclusively available on the Bear website, the Bear Hybrid Mattress offers exceptional value. A queen size is priced at $1,350, but with our exclusive coupon code SHERPA100, you can snag it for just $1,250. Delivery is swift, typically arriving within a week, and the mattress is proudly made in the USA.

Here’s a quick overview of the current prices:
Queen: $1,350
King: $1,650
California King: $1,650

Construction Details of the Bear Hybrid Mattress

The Bear Hybrid is engineered with high-quality materials that promise both comfort and durability. Here are some key features of its five-layer design:

1. Premium Materials for Superiority

The mattress boasts a soft foam quilted top, along with an individually encased coil system comprising over 1,300 coils in a queen size. This layered design is aimed at enhancing recovery during sleep.

2. Celliant Technology

Unique to the Bear Hybrid, Celliant technology in the quilted top helps facilitate increased comfort and restorative sleep by turning body heat into energy.

3. Comfort, Cooling, and Support System

Its design promotes airflow and reduces heat retention, ensuring a cool and comforting sleep environment. The encased coils provide adequate support and pressure relief, making it ideal for a restorative night’s sleep.

My Personal Experience with the Bear Hybrid Mattress

Upon lying down on the Bear Hybrid, I immediately noticed its plush feel—an upgrade from the original Bear mattress. Compared to other micro coil and foam mattresses, this one stands out for its cushy comfort. The quilted, soft cover contributes to this sensation, enveloping you in a gentle embrace as you settle in.

While the coils are not designed for bounce, they enhance breathability and support. Their firmness offers subtle contouring—just enough to cradle your body without overwhelming you.

Motion Transfer and Layer Interaction

One remarkable quality of the Bear Hybrid is its ability to isolate motion. You can see in the video provided how minimal motion transfer occurs, akin to that of an all-foam mattress with a pillow top.

For those curious about the mattress’s inner workings, a zipper located at the bottom corner allows you to peek inside. While you probably will not need to do this, it’s a neat feature for anyone interested in seeing how the layers are constructed.

The top layer uses a springy foam that typically does not conform well. However, thanks to the plush quilted padding, the Bear Hybrid defies the norm and provides excellent conformity without feeling overly restrictive.

Heat Retention Insights

Using a thermal camera, I observed that heat doesn’t linger on this mattress for long. Surprisingly, the quilted cover doesn’t trap heat as one might expect, making it a great option for those prone to overheating during the night.

Recommendation: Who Should Choose the Bear Hybrid Mattress?

The Bear Hybrid Mattress is particularly suited for active individuals. Its Celliant technology is designed to support recovery for anyone engaged in regular exercise. The benefits of this fiber extend through mattress pads and sheets, meaning you can layer up without losing its advantages.

Unlike other technologies, such as Tom Brady’s Under Armour pajamas, the Bear Hybrid allows you to unlock these benefits by simply sleeping on it—no special attire required.

In conclusion, I highly recommend the Bear Hybrid Mattress for anyone interested in experiencing the benefits of Celliant technology. It offers a plush feel without the restrictive sensation common to all-foam options and promotes a cooler night’s sleep. The Bear Hybrid not only revolutionizes how you rest but also enhances your overall well-being. Don’t forget to use our coupon code SHERPA100 for a discount on your purchase!

Polysleep: The Ultimate Must-Have Mattress for Comfort

Polysleep Mattress Review

Polysleep Mattress Review: Your Guide to Optimal Sleep

If you’re in the market for a new mattress, the Polysleep might be the game-changer you’re looking for. Proudly made in Canada, this memory foam mattress combines modern technology with thoughtful design to deliver a restful night’s sleep. Recently, I had the opportunity to test a queen-size Polysleep mattress and I was eager to share my experience.

Overview of the Polysleep Mattress

The Polysleep mattress arrives conveniently rolled up in a box, making delivery easy and hassle-free. It typically shows up on your doorstep within a week of ordering and now, it’s available in both the USA and Canada. One of the standout features of the Polysleep mattress is its 100-night trial period. If you’re not satisfied for any reason, you can return it for a full refund—definitely a win for consumers.

Upon unpacking, Polysleep provides a handy tool to safely cut through the plastic packaging. Once released, the mattress expands to its full shape quickly. I recommend allowing it to breathe for about 2-3 hours before making the bed; this helps reduce any initial off-gassing, which is minimal and usually dissipates within a few hours.

Construction Details of the Polysleep Mattress

What sets the Polysleep apart is its unique construction. Transparency in materials is a hallmark of the brand, making it easier for you to compare it with other mattresses.

Liquid-Repellent Cover

The Polysleep mattress features a soft, liquid-repellent cover that effectively prevents spills from soaking in. This means less worry about accidents, making it perfect for those who enjoy food or drinks in bed. The cover’s mesh sides enhance breathability, keeping you cool as you sleep.

Ventilated Viscoelastic Hybrid Foam

The top layer consists of ventilated, antimicrobial viscoelastic foam. This innovative material promotes airflow, helping to regulate temperature while adapting to your body’s unique contours. It quickly responds to pressure points, ensuring comfort without overheating.

Support Layer

Beneath the top layer lies a transition support layer, designed to provide additional comfort. This layer ensures that your body is fully supported, leading to better overall sleep quality.

Supportive Foam Base

The base layer is made from high-density foam, which acts like a sturdy box spring while enhancing comfort and durability. This foundation adds longevity to the mattress without compromising on softness.

Proprietary Support Frame

One of the unique aspects of the Polysleep mattress is its proprietary support frame. This innovative feature helps maintain the shape of the mattress, preventing flattening when sitting on the edges.

Price Point

When considering a new mattress, cost is an important factor. Here’s a general breakdown of prices for both Canadian and US customers:

Canadian Prices: [Insert price table]
USA Prices: [Insert price table]

Comfort and Performance of the Polysleep Mattress

To assess how the Polysleep mattress performs, I used a 14-pound bowling ball to gauge its sinkage. The mattress adapts quickly, showing excellent recovery thanks to its advanced foam properties. Unlike denser foam mattresses that can trap movement, Polysleep maintains a balance that allows for easy repositioning.

Firmness Level

After extensive testing, I found the Polysleep mattress to be of medium firmness. You’ll experience a gentle sink without being enveloped, making it easier to move around. This balance reduces the “hug” effect often associated with softer mattresses, leading to a cooler sleeping experience.

Final Thoughts: Why Choose Polysleep?

In a crowded marketplace filled with memory foam options, the Polysleep mattress stands out for several reasons. The combination of a liquid-repellent cover and cutting-edge foam technology offers a refreshing alternative for those seeking comfort without the hassle of a mattress protector.

While traditional gel foam offers temporary cooling, the integrated channeled foam and breathable mesh sides of the Polysleep are more effective for long-term comfort. If you prioritize a mattress that’s reactive, sleeps cool, and boasts antimicrobial properties, look no further than Polysleep.

Sleep Better, Naturally

Sleep Naturally

Sleeping Well Naturally

Good physical health and sound mental acuity require getting a restful night’s sleep on a regular basis. Complications potentially arising from or worsened by lack of sleep include cardiovascular and kidney disease, diabetes, obesity and breathing difficulties. Lack of sleep can also have a negative effect on concentration, memory, logical thinking and mood.

Occasional short-term use of prescription or over the counter drugs can provide temporary relief from some sleep disorders, although their continued use can have serious side effects, including physical and psychological dependence.  Fortunately, there are some inexpensive and readily available natural alternatives to help you get the rest you need for optimum physical and mental performance.

Natural Sleep Aids

Melatonin is a naturally occurring substance produced in the human body by the pineal gland. Melatonin regulates the body’s circadian rhythm, which controls the sleeping and awakening cycle. Production of melatonin, however, can slow as people age, often resulting in disrupted sleep patterns and insomnia. Taken regularly in small doses, melatonin supplements can help promote and induce sound sleep.

Another natural substance known to help promote relaxation is valerian root, which is found in health food stores and the vitamin aisles of most pharmacies and grocery stores. Used for centuries to treat anxiety and insomnia, it’s an herbal sleep aid that has a soothing, calming effect on the human body. Available in capsule form or brewed as a tea to be taken shortly before bedtime, valerian root helps promote sound, restful sleep by increasing the body’s level of gamma aminobutryic acid or GABA, a naturally occurring chemical that relaxes the brain and relieves anxiety.

The same chemical substance in turkey that makes Uncle Eddie – and most of the rest of us – feel like taking a nap after eating a huge Thanksgiving Dinner is called tryptophan, an amino acid frequently used to treat insomnia by producing serotonin. The pineal gland then converts serotonin into melatonin, which as mentioned above controls the body’s sleeping and waking cycles. Tryptophan is a dietary supplement available at health food stores, and also occurs naturally in foods such as nuts, legumes and dairy products.

Chamomile is another readily available herb known for both its sleep-inducing effects and its mild tranquilizing properties. A 2009 study by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine concluded that chamomile was effective in reducing stress levels in patients diagnosed with anxiety. Sometimes called “sleep tea” when brewed, a cup of caffeine-free chamomile tea taken shortly before retiring for the night can help relax the body and promote deep, restful sleep.

Other Means of Improving Sleep Quality

Physical exercise has been directly linked to providing relief for chronic insomnia sufferers. A study by the National Sleep Foundation indicates that regularly spending even as little as 10 minutes a day walking, cycling or engaging in other aerobic exercise can dramatically improve sleep quality. In addition to promoting relaxation and sleep, exercise can also help reduce the risk of stroke, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and other sleep-related disorders.

In many instances, simply replacing that worn and sagging old mattress with a new sleep system can provide immediate relief from insomnia, bodily aches and pains and various other sleep ailments. Stop by one of Sit ‘n Sleep’s many conveniently located Southern California outlets to try out various types of mattresses and support levels. Knowledgeable sleep consultants are always on duty to help you select a mattress that’s best for your body type and weight, preferred sleeping position and physical condition.

As with any physical disorder, it’s advisable to consult with your health care provider before using sleep inducing supplements or beginning an exercise routine.

Kaya Mattress: Stunning Support for Back Sleepers

kaya mattress

Kaya Mattress Review

The Kaya Mattress stands out in the competitive world of sleep technology as a remarkable hybrid blend of springs and memory foam. As the popularity of hybrid mattresses surges, driven by the effectiveness of memory foam in providing pressure relief, many still lean towards traditional spring mattresses. The Kaya Mattress beautifully marries the advantages of foam with the familiar support of springs, creating a sleeping experience tailored for various preferences.

My Experience with the Kaya Mattress

After spending over a month sleeping on the Kaya Mattress, I can confidently say that it caters exceptionally well to back and stomach sleepers. Its design prioritizes lower back support, making it an ideal option for those who favor these positions. Side sleepers may need a bit of adjustment time, as the mattress does lean towards the firmer side of the firmness spectrum. I experimented with various sleeping positions, and the versatility of the Kaya Mattress was evident—though its firmer structure may not be for everyone.

Overview of the Kaya Mattress

To provide a clearer understanding of the Kaya Mattress, I’ve created a video overview based on my month-long experience. I received a king-size model for review, and one of the first things that struck me was its substantial weight. This heaviness surprised me given that half of its construction comprises springs. The reason for this significant weight lies in the high-density foams used throughout. Such density not only signifies quality but also allows Kaya to offer an impressive 20-year warranty, far exceeding the standard 10-year warranty prevalent among many online mattress brands. This extended warranty indicates the company’s confidence in their product.

Pricing Details for the Kaya Mattress

The price points for the Kaya Mattress reflect its quality and craftsmanship. Here’s a quick breakdown:

– Twin: $795
– Twin XL: $845
– Full: $995
– Queen: $1195
– King: $1345
– Cal King: $1345

These prices position the Kaya Mattress as a premium product, but the quality justifies the investment.

Construction of the Kaya Mattress

Understanding the construction of the Kaya Mattress is essential to appreciating its benefits. The specifications, as detailed on the Kaya website, include:

ThermoGel Infused Cover

The unique cover is made through a continuous knitting process, devoid of stitching lines, providing a smooth feel. Infused with ThermoGel, it offers cooling properties exactly where they’re needed. The advanced high-pressure padding technology incorporates the ThermoGel into the cover, ensuring a cool sleep experience.

Responsive HD Foam

The top layer consists of highly responsive 1-inch foam, one of the densest available at 5 lbs. This layer is crafted for long-lasting comfort, ensuring you feel supported for years.

Memory Foam

Underneath the responsive foam is a 2-inch layer of 4 lbs. memory foam, engineered to deliver optimal pressure relief. This combination maximizes the benefits of both the responsive foam and the memory foam.

Transition Foam

A 1-inch layer of 2 lbs. transitional foam follows, providing additional support and enabling deeper compression, which enhances comfort.

Pocketed Coils

The core of the Kaya Mattress features over a thousand pocketed coils made from high-grade steel. These coils are strategically positioned between stabilizing foam layers, delivering excellent edge support while minimizing motion transfer. This unique structure allows for impeccable body contouring without sacrificing bounce.

My Findings with the Kaya Mattress

In summary, the Kaya Mattress feels slightly firmer overall, providing substantial support. Interestingly, the top layer mirrors latex-like responsiveness, promoting quicker recovery than traditional foam. This means you won’t find yourself sinking excessively into the mattress, a quality that many sleep enthusiasts crave.

During my testing, I noted how my bowling ball sank only slightly, indicating that the Kaya Mattress maintains firmness while offering comfort. This balance not only supports lower back health but also prevents the heat retention often associated with softer mattresses.

Additionally, I gave viewers a glimpse of the mattress’s internal layers and showcased its firm coil system. The robust nature of the coils contributes to minimal motion transfer, meaning disturbances from a partner’s tossing and turning are rarely felt. This aspect is particularly beneficial for couples seeking uninterrupted sleep.

By using infrared technology, I also assessed how effectively the Kaya Mattress dissipates heat. Its performance falls in the average range, largely due to the supportive spring structure that facilitates airflow.

Should You Choose the Kaya Mattress?

If a firmer sleeping surface that emulates the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, while integrating the contouring benefits of foam, aligns with your preferences, then the Kaya Mattress could be your perfect match. However, if you’re seeking a plush experience, alternatives like the Alexander Signature Hybrid Plush might be worth exploring.

In conclusion, the Kaya Mattress shines in providing exceptional lower back support, particularly cherished by stomach and back sleepers. Although it comes at a higher price point compared to other options, the quality of materials and construction undoubtedly warrants the investment, making it a solid addition to the marketplace.

Kutson Mattress Review: Stunning Choice for Effortless Comfort

Kutson Mattress

The Kutson Bed has been discontinued. Please check out our other mattress reviews.

The Kutson Mattress is a mattress that you can customize for each sleeper. Each side can be soft, medium or firm support by simply unzipping the cover and rearranging the middle layer of the mattress. The Kutson also has enhanced edge support which can be problematic with memory foam mattresses. A queen size retails for $995. The Kutson comes with all the standard assurances that we have come expect with online brands including a 10 year warranty, free shipping and a 120 night trial period. The Kutson has been quickly gaining favorable press by recently being featured in Fast Company and Digital Trends.

Overview of the Kutson Mattress

You can purchase a Kutson directly from their website. Your order should arrive in about 5-7 business days. No need to worry about selecting the, “right” firmness either. Your Kutson will come with soft medium and firm layers so that you can get the right fit the first time. That also means you can configure it 9 different ways.

Below are the prices and cost of each size Kutson:

SIZEDIMENSIONSSHIPPING WEIGHTPRICE
Twin38″ x 74″ x 11″58 lbs.$690
Twin XL38″ x 80″ x 11″63 lbs.$750
Full53″ x 74″ x 11″80 lbs.$920
Queen60″ x 80″ x 11″99 lbs.$995
King76″ x 80″ x 11″124 lbs.$1,180
Californa King72″ x 84″ x 11″123 lbs.$1,180

I don’t know the exact densities of each layer but below is a guide the Kutson created to help you create the right type of softness.

Kutson Mattress

Below is a video overview of the Kutson mattress. You can see that the zipper to adjust the layers is easily accessible. This is a really nice feature if you change firmnesses frequently. The Kutson mattress is great for a guest room since you can configure the firmness for your guests.

Here is a cross-section view of the Kutson. What you can see in this picture is the adjustable layers. Those are hidden underneath the top layer and behind the edge support surround.

Kutson Mattress Construction

Here’s a picture of the foam border of the Kutson which keeps you in the mattress and keeps the adjustable layers from shifting around.

kutson edge support

My Kutson Mattress Findings

The Kutson is superior for handling motion transfer mainly because it’s an all foam mattress but also because the middle layers are divided which also helps isolate motion on each side of the mattress.

To give you a sense of range of firmness on this mattress, I rolled my mattress from the soft to firm layers so you can see how much the ball sinks. There is definitely a noticeable difference when you feel the layers directly. When you place the top layer over however the difference is more subtle.

Here’s a peek inside the kutson so you can see how it all works. The removable layers are easy to take out. I found it takes a little finessing to get them back in just right.

Here’s a shot of my 14 lb. ball on the soft side of the mattress.

Kutson mattress sink soft

Here’s the same ball on the firm side where there is noticeably less sinkage.

kutson mattress sink firm

The shot below shows the layers side by side. Notice how they fit neatly into the framed border of the mattress which is a firmer foam to provide better edge support and to keep the inside layers from separating apart.

kutson mattress layers

The video below gives you an ides of how the top layer reacts and how it interacts with the side and middle layers.

The Kutson is middle of the pack when it comes to heat retention. Nothing out of the ordinary here and is on par for a foam mattress. Since the top layer isn’t all that dense it doesn’t trap as much heat as a traditional denser foam mattress.

My Kutson Recommendation

If you and your sleep partner just can’t agree on a mattress. In other words, if one likes soft and the other firm, the Kutson is a mattress worth considering. It is made of foam that recovers quickly so you won’t’ get that stuck feeling. You also get the advantage of superior edge support. If you want a really soft or really firm mattress you will probably want to look elsewhere but if you and your partner are close but still can’t agree on a mattress, then the Kutson is definitely worth a shot. With a 100-night sleep trial, it’s worth a shot.

Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour: Stunning Sleeper’s Choice

Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour

Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour Review

Although the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour mattress is no longer available, the Nest Alexander Hybrid serves as an excellent alternative. This article explores the features, construction, comfort, and overall performance of the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour, helping you understand why it has garnered attention in the mattress world.

Overview of the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour

Available exclusively through Nest Bedding, the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour offers a convenient online ordering process. Once you place your order, expect delivery within 5 to 7 business days, making it easy to integrate into your routine. Each mattress is conveniently packed in a box, allowing for easy transport to your bedroom, as it ships via FedEx. This means no waiting for a delivery person; your new mattress will be at your doorstep ready for setup.

For a quick visual overview, you can watch a detailed video that highlights the unique features and benefits of the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour, setting it apart from others in the market.

Construction Details of the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour

The Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour is designed with comfort and support in mind. Here are its key construction details as provided by Nest Bedding:

1.5 inches of 2.5 lb. Copper Phase Change Gel Memory Foam: This advanced material features a phase change-infused surface designed for an unparalleled cooling experience.
2 inches of 3 lb. Energex Foam: A responsive foam that adds to the comfort of the mattress.
1 inch of 4 lb. Visco Soft Memory Foam: Enhances the plush feel while conforming to the sleeper’s body.
3 inches of 1300 Micro Coil System: These mini coils provide support and help to distribute weight evenly across the mattress.
4 inches of High-Density Foam Edge Support Core: Offers durability and stability, ensuring a consistent sleeping surface.

The cover of the mattress features a significant amount of phase change material, providing a unique cool-to-the-touch effect. Unlike other models in the Alexander series, this cover has a smooth surface instead of the traditional tufted or pillow-top look, giving it a sleek and modern aesthetic.

Comfort and Support: My Findings

For those who prefer a softer mattress, the Alexander Luxury Contour answers the call. Softer mattresses often struggle with providing adequate support, yet this model mitigates that concern through the careful combination of mini coils and memory foam. These coils allow you to sink into the mattress without feeling like you are sinking too deep in any one area.

To demonstrate the mattress’s sinkage and support, I used a 14-pound bowling ball, which visually illustrated how well the mattress conforms to body weight while providing support where needed.

Despite its memory foam base, the mattress retains a certain amount of bounce due to the 1,300 mini coils embedded within. This means you won’t feel stuck, as the bed quickly recovers, allowing for ease of movement throughout the night.

The name Contour is apt; this mattress perfectly adapts to your body’s shape. With each use, I found the unique feel of these micro coils to be transformative. Individually, a single mini coil might not impress, but when deployed across a mattress, their cumulative effect is remarkable.

Sleep Cool with Advanced Features

Heat retention can be a common issue with memory foam mattresses, but the Alexander Luxury Contour does a stellar job of keeping you cool while you sleep. Three primary features contribute to its superior temperature regulation: the cool-to-the-touch phase change cover, the copper-infused top layer, and the breathable mini coils. Together, these elements create a comfortable sleeping environment free from excess heat, as demonstrated in a video that shows how efficiently heat dissipates from the mattress.

Quality is a hallmark of all Nest Bedding products. The design of this mattress includes stitched handles on the sides, making it easier to rotate or transport while adding an extra touch of elegance.

Recommendations for Sleepers

The Alexander Luxury Contour excels as a dedicated option for side sleepers. It effectively alleviates pressure points in the hips and shoulders, making it an ideal choice for those who sleep in this position. However, if you alternate between side and stomach sleeping, you may want to consider the slightly firmer Alexander Hybrid model.

In summary, the Alexander Hybrid Luxury Contour rounds out Nest Bedding’s hybrid offerings, providing a cozy yet supportive sleeping experience. It delivers exceptional comfort, making it suitable for those who prioritize softness while still wanting to feel supported.

Layla Pillow: Must-Have for Effortless Sleep Comfort

Layla Pillow 2

Layla Pillow Price

The Layla pillow is a premium pillow that is priced at $129 for a queen size. However, the Layla pillow is often on sale, so you can usually find it for a lower price.

Layla Pillow Trial and Benefits

The Layla pillow comes with a 120-night trial period. This means that you can try the pillow for 120 nights and return it if you’re not satisfied with it.

The Layla pillow has a number of benefits, including:

  • It is adjustable, so you can choose the perfect loft for your needs.
  • It is made with a combination of memory foam and shredded memory foam, which gives it a unique feel that is both supportive and comfortable.
  • It is breathable, so it will keep you cool and comfortable all night long.
  • It is hypoallergenic, so it is ideal for people who suffer from allergies or asthma.
  • It is machine-washable, so it is easy to keep clean.

Layla Pillow Construction

The Layla pillow is made with a combination of memory foam and shredded memory foam. The memory foam provides support, while the shredded memory foam provides comfort and breathability. The pillow is also covered in a soft and breathable fabric.

The Layla pillow is not only the perfect pillow for your Layla mattress, it’s a memory foam pillow that pairs well with most mattresses. It’s priced at $99 and similar to the Layla mattress, it also is infused with copper giving it antimicrobial properties.  You can tell a lot of thought went into the design of this pillow which gives it an almost universal feel.

Ordering Your Layla Pillow

Currently, you can only purchase the Layla Pillow exclusively through the Layla website. It will arrive about a week after ordering. Unlike many pillows, this one actually comes with a free trial period. You can try it for 120 nights and if you don’t like it, return it for a full refund. That includes shipping to you and free return shipping something not often found with other pillow purchases.

Here’s a video overview of the Layla pillow with me on the Layla mattress. As you can see the cover of both the pillow and mattress are the same.

Construction of the Layla Pillow

The pillow is a standard/queen size the measurements are as follows:

24″ wide x 18″ tall x 4″ deep

The Layla pillow is made with a kapok/memory foam fill. Kapok is a fiber that comes from the seeds of a Kapok tree. It has a silky feel that makes for a great filler since it is a natural, renewable material. Combining this with shredded memory foam makes the pillow feel softer and lighter.

What are the other benefits of Kapok?

Kapok is hypoallergenic.
Sustainable
Lighter than cotton
Resists clumping
Down like feel

The cover of the Layla pillow is made with a copper infused cover. This makes the pillow sleep cooler due to copper’s high conductivity. Copper is also antimicrobial so your pillow will stay fresh, longer.

My Layla Pillow Findings

The Layla pillow has a medium loft. That means that it is thick enough to accommodate all sleepers. This is the first pillow with foam and kapok that I have tried. There are many latex/kapok pillow on the market which have a more bouncy feel. I think the foam used in this pillow pairs well with the kapok because you get the familiar down like feel and all the conforming and pressure relieving benefits of memory foam.

Best of all this pillow comes with a trial period so there’s nothing to lose with giving it a try. Pillows you buy on Amazon or other sites often require you to pay return shipping. With Layla they cover the return shipping you’re not out any money.

This pillow does NOT feel like the solid foam pillows of yesteryear. Think of the Layla pillow as a next generation foam pillow that leverages one of the best natural fibers, Kapok with shredded foam to make the pillow breathable, squish and comfy. The added benefit of a copper infused cover means you can get many years out of this pillow.

To maintain the luxurious quality of your bamboo sheets, washing them correctly is essential. It is crucial to avoid bleach, as this can affect the sheets’ integrity and color.

Personal Experience with Nest Bamboo Sheets

Allow me to share my experience with the “smoke pinstripe” design. Besides this striking pattern, options like solid white and window pane are available to suit your stylistic preferences. The contemporary look of these sheets will seamlessly enhance any bedroom decor.

The moment you lay down on them, you’ll notice how incredibly smooth they feel. Thanks to the 300 thread count, these sheets strike the perfect balance between breathability and softness. Unlike traditional cotton, bamboo sheets dry quickly and require less time in the dryer, enhancing their overall functionality.

Attention to Detail

Upon examining the sheets closely, the quality of construction becomes evident. The stitching is tight and uniform, indicating a level of craftsmanship that sets these sheets apart from competitors. I was pleased to find no flaws in my set, reinforcing my belief in their durability.

My Recommendation: Why Choose Nest Bamboo Sheets?

When it comes to purchasing bamboo sheets, quality is paramount. I’ve experienced numerous bamboo sheets that succumb to pilling after just a few washes, diminishing the overall experience. However, my Nest bamboo sheets have consistently held their form and continue to look fabulous on my bed.

For those who tend to sleep hot, investing in bamboo sheets is an excellent decision. Their unique moisture-wicking properties ensure that you stay cool throughout the night, making for a more restful sleep.

Snowe Sheets: Must-Have Luxury for Effortless Comfort

Snowe Home Sateen Sheets

Snowe Sateen Sheets Review

Finding the perfect sheets can be a daunting task, especially with so many options available. Recently, I had the opportunity to try out Snowe’s latest creation—their sateen weave sheets. As someone who previously reviewed their percale sheets and found them delightful, I was excited to see how the sateen version stacks up. Priced at $198 for a queen set, these sheets are on the higher end of the market. However, the quality and aesthetics may justify the investment. If you’re uncertain about whether to go with percale or sateen, Snowe has created an informative flow chart to help you decide which type suits your needs.

The Snowe Home Philosophy

Snowe Home was envisioned by co-founders Rachel Cohen and Andres Modak, who aimed to elevate everyday goods through superior design and quality. By partnering directly with reputable manufacturers, Snowe is able to offer high-quality products at reasonable prices. While their bedding line is impressive, Snowe also provides a variety of home essentials, including tableware, towels, and drinkware. Their simple, minimalist designs ensure that each product seamlessly integrates into any home decor, bringing a soothing aesthetic to every room. Even their candles exude a modern and calming charm.

What’s Inside the Snowe Sheets?

When you purchase a Snowe sheet set, you’ll receive the following:

– 1 Fitted Sheet
– 1 Flat Sheet
– 2 Pillowcases

These sheets arrive packaged in a luxurious sateen envelope, which makes for practical storage when not in use. Available in a range of colors including Essential White, Ash Grey, and Classic Ivory, there is an option to suit any bedroom style.

Sizes Offered

Snowe Sheets come in various sizes to fit most mattresses:

Full
– Fitted Sheet: 76” L x 55” W x 18” D
– Flat Sheet: 102” L x 81” W
– Pillowcase: 32” L x 20” W

Queen
– Fitted Sheet: 80” L x 60” W x 18” D
– Flat Sheet: 112” L x 100” W
– Pillowcase: 32” L x 20” W

King/Cal King
– Fitted Sheet: 80” L x 78” W x 18” D
– Flat Sheet: 112” L x 118” W
– Pillowcase: 40” L x 20” W

Quality Materials and Care

Crafted in Portugal, the Snowe Sateen Sheets are made from 100% long-staple cotton, featuring a luxurious 400 thread count that balances softness and durability perfectly.

Care Instructions:
– Wash separately
– Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle
– Do not bleach
– Tumble dry on low
– Warm iron optional

My Experience with Snowe Sheets

Upon opening the carefully packaged set, the first thing that catches your eye is the elegant presentation. The sheets are wrapped in a brown paper package and safeguarded inside a plastic bag. Notably, Snowe includes information on the necessity of the plastic, adding a thoughtful touch to their eco-conscious approach.

The attention to detail continues with a breathable fabric storage bag, identical to the sheets, making it easy to recognize and maintain your linens. Upon initial inspection, the lightweight nature of these sheets stands out. With a 400 thread count, they feel smooth and airy, avoiding the heaviness that can come with higher thread counts.

Turning to the stitching, the precision is remarkable, evident in both the flat and fitted sheets. The fitted sheet conveniently accommodates mattresses up to 18” deep, making it versatile for various bed styles. The elegant white stripe on the top sheet adds an understated element of luxury, enhancing its aesthetic without overpowering the simplicity of the design.

Conclusion: Are Snowe Sheets Worth It?

In a crowded market filled with conventional cotton sheets priced around $150, Snowe Sheets clearly stand apart. With their superior construction and soft feel—immediately noticeable after just one wash—these sateen sheets elevate the concept of bedding. Investing in Snowe Sheets means investing in comfort and quality that can redefine your sleeping experience. If you’re ready to upgrade your bed linens, I highly recommend giving Snowe a try. Experience the softness and sophistication that sets Snowe Sheets apart, and transform your nightly rest into a luxurious experience.

The Organic Cotton Down Comforter from SOL Organics

Sol Organics Comforter

Sol Organics is well known for their Fair Trade, Organic Cotton sheets. They have recently added an organic cotton and down comforter to their bedding collection. You can choose from two options, the summer which is a lower fill power at 600 loft or all season with a higher fill power at 700 loft. A queen size all season comforter retails for $350. This down duvet is the perfect addition to your organic bedroom.

Ordering your SOL  Organic Cotton Down Comforter

You can order this comforter direct from the SOL Organics website. After placing your order the comforter should arrive in about a week. The comforter will arrive in a zippered package that keeps it clean and can be used to store it when not in use. SOL offers a 30 day trial period where you can try out their bedding for 30 days and if it’s not right for you, they will issue you a refund. Please note that used bedding will incur a $9.99 processing fee.

Construction of the Organic Down Comforter

You can choose from two types of comforters on their website. The Summer comforter is a 600 fill power which means it has a lower insulation rating than the All Season. I would recommend this one for people living in more temperate climates. If you live in a northern state like me, I would go with the All Season. The All Season has a 700 fill power which will make you a bit more cozy on those cold winter nights.

For the quality and money, you will be hard-pressed to find a better comforter. You may be able to find something comparable made in China but this ethically sourced down that is traceable.  The down used in this comforter is part of a program called the Canada Goose Down Transparency Standard. This standard ensures that the down is sourced from animals that have not been subjected to any unfair practices, willful mistreatment or undue harm, and materials are fully traceable throughout the supply chain.

The outer cover of the comforter is made with GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified cotton. This is in keeping with SOL’s mission of providing sustainable, ethically sourced products.

What is Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder?

Delayed Sleep Disorder

Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

Do you stay awake for a long time after going to bed at night? Do you prefer to go to bed later than usual and sleep in the next morning? If yes, then you could be suffering from a dysregulation of your biological clock, also called the circadian rhythm. There are different names given to the dysregulation of the circadian rhythm. One of them is delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD).

Disorders like DSPD often go undiagnosed, considering that a large section of the young population suffers from the condition. Adolescents and teens are more likely to have DSPD when they call themselves night owls and prefer to sleep in the morning. Too often, when a person strays from his normal biological clock for a long time, it gets harder to return to the normal circadian rhythm.

What causes DSPD?

Although the exact cause is unclear, researchers believe that genetics has a role to play in DSPD. The disorder usually develops in late adolescence or early adulthood and disappears after a few years. Very few adults have been found to suffer from chronic DSPD.

DSPD happens, partly, due to a genetic mutation. It is the opposite of advanced sleep phase disorder (in which the person goes to bed and wakes up earlier than normal). People with DSPD usually go to bed in the early morning, between 1 am, and 4 am, and awaken later in the morning, between 8 am and 11 am. This is more common among socially active people, who feel more energetic during the evenings and late nights. In fact, those who burn the midnight oil and do not maintain the biological sleep cycle are a high risk of getting this disorder.

If DSPD exists alone with no other sleep disorder, people usually manage to get adequate sleep no matter when they get to bed. People generally stick to the late sleeping scheduling if it does not interfere with normal life.

If the person can make it to school or work on time, and still get enough sleep every night, it signifies that DSPD is not interfering with daily routines. In such cases, it may be advised to maintain the routine, as the circadian rhythm disorder might not be harmful.

Difference between DSPD and insomnia

Circadian rhythm disorders are often confused with insomnia, but they are very different from each other. People with circadian rhythm disorders like DSPD have a sleep schedule that may not be typical, but they do manage to get adequate sleep. People with insomnia, on the other hand, cannot fall asleep at any time during the day or night and fail to get adequate sleep.

Symptoms of Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

The characteristics of DSPD distinguish it from other sleep disorders. Some of the symptoms are:

People with DSPD have a higher ability to sleep during the daytime, compared to those with a normal sleep schedule or those with insomnia. While normal people do not feel sleepy during the morning or afternoon, people with DSPD are able to sleep soundly even the sun is shining.

People with DSPD manage to fall asleep around the same time every night (or day), and if the person goes to bed around the time they feel sleepy, they find it easy to fall asleep rapidly. Children and adolescents with DSPD do not want to go to bed until they are sleepy, but the bedtime struggles disappear if they are allowed to stay up until the time they usually fall asleep.

People with DSPD usually sleep well when they are allowed to follow their own sleep schedule. They fall into a rhythm and often make up for lost sleep on weekends and during vacations.

DSPD is a chronic disorder whose symptoms must be present for at least three months at a stretch before a diagnosis can be made.

Severity of DSPD

Like most sleep disorders, DSPD is also classified according to severity. They are:

Mild:  When the condition is ‘mild,’ there is usually a two-hour delay (compared to the normal sleep routine) in falling asleep, with little to no social or occupational disruption.

Moderate: The condition is moderate when there is a delay of three hours, with some amount of impairment.

Severe: The condition is classified as severe when there is a delay of four or more hours with severe social and occupational impairment.

Unlike what is usually thought by those around DSPD patients, this isn’t just a lifestyle problem. People with DSPD are unable to force themselves into a normal sleep routine. Even if they go to bed earlier, they will toss and turn until the time when they can naturally fall asleep.

Before seeking medical help, they usually try to change their sleeping schedule that would help them fall asleep earlier. Most of these methods are a failure in bringing about any change. Things like sleeping aids, alcohol, reading, and meditation aren’t usually successful. People with DSPD who tried using sleeping pills to fall asleep sooner report that it only makes them tired and relaxed, but not sleepy.

Treatment for Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

There is no proper treatment method for DSPD, and doctors usually resort to a combination of methods to treat DSPD. The most common method is to gradually scale back the sleeping times of the patient until the desired timeframe is achieved. Once a proper has been achieved, it should be strictly maintained. This method is shown to be effective but must be very rigidly followed, because the new routine will fail if the person stays up until late even one day.

There are a few other methods too that are applied to treat circadian rhythm disorders. One of them is bright light therapy, in which the person is exposed to bright lights during early morning hours shortly after waking up while avoiding bright outdoor light during the evening hours. This has been shown to readjust the sleep-wake routine.

Delayed sleep phase disorder is not really a problem with most people. As long as the person gets the desired amount of sleep, there is no need for treatment. However, a doctor may be consulted if DSPD starts to interfere with daily life.

Best Christmas Sheets for Your Bed 2017

Christmas sheets

There are no limits to the ways in which you can decorate your home for the holidays. However, nothing is better than getting cozy in a nice set of Christmas sheets that have a festive pattern. On cold winter nights, it’s nice to know that you will have a welcoming bedroom that exudes the Christmas spirit.

Below are some perirenal favorites and some newcomers. Pottery Barn, of course, is a staple for Christmas Bedding and linens but there are others with a new twist on an old tradition. Whether for yourself, your guest room or a gift, this year has some real gems.

Best Christmas Sheets

Pottery Barn Christmas Bedding

Pottery Barn is one of the best places to find new designs and styles. This year more brands are incorporating organic cotton into their offerings.

Here is a string light set that is currently retailing from $18-$90

Pottery Barn Christmas Sheets

Best Flannel Christmas Sheets

JC Penny is offering micro flannel sheets this Christmas. I really like this winter scene pattern below. It is sometimes hard to find Christmas sheets that are not flannel since cozy flannel is used almost exclusively in the winter.

Jc Penny Sheets 1

Kohl’s is offering a few new Christmas bedding patterns but I haven’t been that impressed. They just aren’t as festive as some of the other offerings. This North Pole printed flannel sheet set retails for $84.99-109.99 and will be warmer than the aforementioned JC Penny set.

kohls christmas sheets

Best Micro Fiber Christmas Sheets

Target wins Christmas in the microfiber category. Are you sensing a “pattern” here? That’s right when it comes to Christmas no need to be subtle. These sheets scream Christmas and they are super soft right out of the packaging. Normally I don’t recommend microfiber sheets as they seem to break down after about 7-10 washes but since these are for holidays they won’t get that much use anyway. Also, you can get a queen set for $24.99

Best Christmas Sheets for Kids

Pottery Barn always seems to land sweet licensing deals. This year you can get a Peanuts Christmas themed bedding set which includes not only sheets but duvet cover and/or quilt.

Peanuts Christmas Sheets

Best New Christmas Sheets

Continuing on the Peanuts theme, Vermont Country Store upped the ante with a flannel set of Peanuts sheets which seems to have more vivid colors than the Pottery Barn offering. These are 100% flannel cotton sheets made in Portugal. They are currently retailing from $79.95-119.95

Peanuts flannel christmas sheets

I was hoping to find some fun patterns from some of the more dependable brands like Macy’s LL Bean and Eddie Bauer but they either didn’t have anything or there just wasn’t anything worth mentioning. Take for instance the one offering I could find from Macy’s on their website.

Zinus Mattress Topper Review

Zinus swirl gel mattress topper

Deciding between getting a new mattress and just a mattress topper depends on various factors, including the current condition of your mattress, your personal comfort preferences, and budget constraints. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed decision:

  1. Age of Your Mattress: A typical mattress lasts 7-10 years. If yours is within or past this age range, it might be time for a new one.

  2. Mattress Condition:

    • Sagging: If your mattress has noticeable dips or sags, especially in the areas where you sleep most, a topper won’t fix the underlying issue. A new mattress might be in order.
    • Springs: Can you feel the springs poking through? If so, a mattress topper might provide temporary relief, but it’s a sign that your mattress is reaching the end of its life.
    • Lumps: Uneven surfaces or lumpy areas can make for an uncomfortable sleep. A topper might help in some cases, but often a new mattress is the better solution.
  3. Comfort & Firmness: If your mattress is still in good shape but just a little too firm or soft for your liking, a mattress topper can adjust the firmness without the need for a completely new mattress.

  4. Allergies & Hygiene: Over time, mattresses can accumulate allergens like dust mites. If you’ve kept it for many years and suffer from allergies, consider a new mattress. However, using a mattress protector can help keep your new mattress cleaner for longer.

  5. Sleep Quality: If you’re experiencing poorer sleep quality, waking up with aches and pains, or finding it difficult to get comfortable, it’s essential to discern if it’s the mattress or other factors like stress or health issues. If it’s the mattress, determine if its condition or firmness is the issue to decide between a topper or a new mattress.

  6. Budget: Mattress toppers are generally more affordable than buying a new mattress. If you’re on a tight budget but need a temporary solution to enhance comfort, a topper might be the way to go. However, investing in a good mattress can provide longer-lasting comfort and support.

  7. Mattress Warranty: Check if your mattress is still under warranty. Some warranties might be voided if you use certain types of toppers. Also, if it’s failing due to manufacturing defects and is still under warranty, you might get a replacement.

  8. Temporary vs. Long-Term Solutions: Mattress toppers can be a great temporary solution to enhance comfort, but they typically don’t last as long as mattresses. If you’re looking for a long-term solution, investing in a new mattress might be wiser.

  9. Type of Topper: If you’re leaning towards a topper, consider the material and thickness. Memory foam, latex, feather, and wool are popular choices, each with its own benefits.

In conclusion, assess the current state of your mattress and weigh the pros and cons of each option concerning your needs and budget. If your mattress is old, sagging, or causing discomfort, it’s probably time for a new one. If you’re looking for a change in firmness or a temporary comfort boost, a mattress topper might be the answer.

  5. Positive Customer Reviews: Zinus has garnered positive reviews from customers who have praised the brand for its value, comfort, and durability. Positive word-of-mouth and online testimonials have contributed to the brand’s popularity and increased customer trust.

  6. Strong Online Presence: Zinus has effectively utilized online platforms and e-commerce channels to market its products. Their presence on popular online marketplaces and their active engagement with customers through social media platforms have helped the brand gain visibility and attract a large customer base.

I bought a Zinus Swirl Gel Memory foam topper, 2 inch to see how it would affect my mattress. I put this topper on the new Zinus Cooling Gel Mattress,  12 inch. This mattress is a medium firm feel as listed on their website but I found it to be a little too firm so adding one of their toppers might be a good solution.

You can buy the Zinus Swirl Gel memory foam topper direct from Amazon. It is currently selling for $54.99.

Here are some of the highlights of the topper:

  • 2 inches of cool gel memory foam for ideal sleeping comfort
  • Air flow pattern for cool support
  • Green tea extract and castor natural plant oil naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria
  • Only the highest Quality memory foam – memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and Content
  • Worry Free 5 year limited Warranty

You can also buy this Zinus topper in the following sizes.

1.5″ $39.99
2″ $54.99
3″ $69.99
4″ $109.99

Notice that if you go up to a 4″ the construction changes. Here are the construction details of the 4″ mattress.  Zinus 4 inch mattress topper

  • 1 inch of cool gel memory foam for ideal sleeping comfort
  • 3 inches of air flow high density support foam provides cool support
  • Green tea extract and castor natural plant oil naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria
  • Only the highest Quality memory foam – memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and Content
  • Worry Free 5 year limited Warranty

The construction needs to be different or at least should be different on a thicker topper because if you don’t have a dense foam support base, you will lose alignment and sink into the topper too much.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Findings

As always, Amazon will deliver your mattress topper lightning fast since it is Amazon prime eligible. I received mine in 2 days and it arrived in a compact box. Note that the topper was not shrink wrapped but it was wrapped. That may be different with the 4 inch topper though.

Here’s what the topper looks like on my bed.

Zinus mattress topper 2

Here’s another shot but closer up so that you can see more of the peak and valley construction.

Zinus Swirl foam topper

Below is a video that shows how the topper reacts. It recovers fairly quickly.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Recommendation

Mattress toppers are good if your mattress is structurally sound underneath. A mattress topper cannot solve issues with a sagging mattress or a mattress that just doesn’t give you proper support. What it can do though is soften it up a bit to make it more comfortable and to extend the life of your existing mattress.

I particularly like this 2 inch topper because it softened my mattress just a bit more. If you go too thick such as a 4 inch topper you can either make it too soft or lose some of the support that your mattresses was designed for. I think the sweet spot for mattress topper thickness is between 2-3 inches. Going less than 2 inches really doesn’t do much unless you are a really light person.

The box for this 2 inch topper from Zinus was small enough where if I wanted to return it, it would be fairly easy to do and since the topper didn’t come shrink-wrapped it would be easy enough to get back in the box, unlike compressed mattress or topper.

In conclusion, if you have a mattress that still gives you proper support but you are just looking to make it a bit softer, definitely check out the Zinus Swirl Gel Foam topper. The peak and valley construction allows for more breathability and feels great!

This blanket is not merely a pretty accessory; it’s scientifically designed to help improve your rest and recovery.

Overview of the Yaasa Mattress

When you order a Yaasa mattress, it comes conveniently compressed in a box, ready to set up in just a few days. With four distinct firmness levels, Yaasa aims to cater to a wide range of sleep preferences. For this review, I received the soft model, an intriguing choice given the challenges of balancing softness with support and motion isolation. The mattress also comes with a generous 100-day risk-free trial. This means you have a full three months to determine if it meets your sleep needs. If it doesn’t work for you, returning it is hassle-free, and you’ll receive a full refund.

8″ – Quantum Edge Coil System

My Personal Experience with the Yaasa Mattress

Unboxing the Yaasa mattress reveals a well-crafted product ready for use immediately. Like most mattresses compressed in a box, there was some initial off-gassing, but it wasn’t overpowering. I appreciated how well the mattress layers transitioned; at no point did I feel jarring springs or harsh transitions.

The mattress is also equipped with stitched leather handles for easier positioning, showcasing the thoughtful design that goes into each feature.

Regarding sinkage, the soft model exceeded my expectations, providing a comforting cradling effect. This can be clearly seen in my demonstration videos, which also highlight the impressive recovery speed of the foam layers.

While the hybrid design allows for some bounce—thanks to the coil system—it does an excellent job of managing motion transfer, making it suitable for couples.

Temperature Regulation and Heat Dissipation

Yaasa employs cutting-edge foam technology to combat heat retention in their mattresses. The combination of the coil system and Tencel fabric cover enhances breathability significantly. My videos effectively illustrate how quickly heat dissipates from the mattress surface, ensuring a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout the night.

Is the Yaasa Mattress Right for You?

If you’re in the market for a soft, hybrid mattress that offers a balance of comfort and responsiveness, the Yaasa mattress may be the perfect fit. Unlike many traditional soft mattresses that can trap heat and cause discomfort, this model delivers a cozy embrace while remaining breathable and easy to move on.

While many soft mattresses rely on pillow tops, which can create unwanted peaks and valleys, the pocket coil system and responsive foams effectively mitigate this issue, enhancing your sleeping experience.

Yaasa boasts a team of strong engineering and design talent, evident in every aspect of their mattress. For those prioritizing both comfort and functionality, the Yaasa mattress stands out as a strong contender.

What Causes Talking in Your Sleep?

iStock 637329084
What Causes Talking in Your Sleep? Have you ever found your partner mumbling in their sleep or your child calling out to you while asleep? It could be somniloquy, also known as sleep talking. It is a sleep disorder that involves talking while asleep without any knowledge of it. Sleep talking can vary from one person to another: it can involve dialogues and monologues, complete gibberish or just mumbling and moaning. Sleep talking affects mostly children and males. It can be a rare, short-term occurrence, or it may require proper diagnosis and treatment. Sleep talking is the result of a confused mental state and can indicate underlying disorders. Although sleep talking is not harmful, it is embarrassing for the person and annoying for other sleeping nearby. It can cause concern in those who have never experienced it, and people may either make fun of the person or stay away from him. As a result, sleep talkers might be afraid to stay overnight away from home or share the room with new people. Sleep talkers seem to be talking to themselves, but sometimes they may also seem to be having the conversation with another person. Sleep talking may not be a regular occurrence. A person may sleep talk infrequently, but when it happens every day, it should be properly evaluated by a doctor. Who Talks In Their Sleep? Anyone can talk in his or her sleep. Many children between the ages three and ten talk to themselves while asleep, and about five percent of adults do the same once they fall asleep. These may not be a regular occurrence and can happen once in a while. Experts think that sleep talking runs in the family. So sleep talking parents might have children with similar patterns. Stages of Sleep Talking When being examined, a sleep talker will be evaluated by the stages of somniloquy. There are four stages of sleep talking, but they can be grouped into two. Stages 1 and 2: In the first two stages, the sleep talker isn’t in very deep sleep. Thus their speech is easier to understand. In these stages, the sleep talker can have entire conversations that make sense. People sharing the bed or the room with the sleep talker might think that the person is awake and having a conversation with someone. However, the sleep talker isn’t aware of this occurrence. Stages 3 and 4: In these stages, the sleep talker is in deeper sleep, making their speech harder to comprehend. The ‘talk’ may vary from mere moaning or mumbling sounds to full-fledged gibberish accompanied by shouting and screaming. Sleep talkers in these stages can be a real annoyance for the people around. Sleep talkers can be broadly classified into these two groups. Sleep talking can either take place at the beginning of sleep or in a deep sleep. In either case, the person has no memory of the occurrence. Severity of Sleep Talking The healthcare practitioner will determine the severity of the condition by understanding how frequently it occurs. As mentioned earlier, sleep talking may or may not happen regularly. Therefore, when being evaluated by a doctor, the severity and frequency of the occurrence should be taken into account.   There are three types of severity. Mild: The condition is classified as ‘mild’ when sleep talking happens less than once a month. Moderate: The condition is classified as ‘moderate’ when sleep talking occurs once a week, but not regularly, and does not affect the others in the room. Severe: The condition is classified as severe when sleep talking occurs every night and interferes with the sleep of others in the room. Possible Causes of Sleep Talking There is no solid evidence as to what causes sleep talking. Experts claim that sleep disorders like sleep apnea, night terrors, and somnambulism (sleepwalking) are possible triggers for somniloquy. Since the talking can happen at any stage of sleep, it is not clear if sleep talking has any connection with dreaming. Sleep talking could be a sign of more serious disorders. REM sleep disorder (a type of parasomnia) and night terrors are two of the most causes found to be associated with sleep talk. Both of these disorders usually involve screaming, thrashing about, and kicking. People suffering from REM sleep disorder may also violently shout or act out dreams. Sometimes, nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder (where a person eats while asleep) can also be responsible for sleep talking. Other possible causes include severe emotional stress, trauma, fever, reaction to medications, and substance abuse. Treatment of Sleep Talking Somniloquy doesn’t have any treatment, so the doctor will talk to the sleep talker to find out if there are any underlying causes of the condition. Even though sleep talking isn’t harmful if the occurrences are too violent or loud or start suddenly. Since the person himself isn’t aware of these occurrences, he has to talk to his partner, roommate, or other family member to find out the severity of the condition. The doctor will try and find out if there is any other condition that is causing the sleep talking. In some cases, sleep tests, such as a sleep study or sleep recording (polysomnogram), may be suggested. The doctor will also want to know if the person is on any medication, has a history of trauma, or gets enough rest. How to Minimize Sleep Talking Even though cannot be predicted and there is no treatment either, there are steps a person can take to minimize the occurrences. These include:
  • Avoiding stressful situations and triggers that can disturb sleep and cause somniloquy
  • Getting enough sleep every night
  • Avoiding heavy meals close to bedtime
  • Keeping track of medications and reactions to them
  • Avoiding alcohol or caffeinated drinks
Sleep talking isn’t a serious condition as long as it isn’t interfering with the sleep of others. If someone suddenly starts sleep talking after age 25, it needs medical attention. If sleep talking is mild to moderate, then roommates or partners could try using earplugs or white noise to drown out the talking.

Nectar vs. Ghostbed: Choosing the Right Mattress for You

When it comes to selecting a mattress, the options can feel overwhelming. With countless styles, materials, price points, and firmness levels, finding the perfect match for your needs becomes a daunting task, especially if you’re a first-time buyer. Amidst pushy sales tactics and often misleading online descriptions, it’s important to make an informed choice. Enter two popular contenders in the online mattress market: Nectar and Ghostbed. Each offers distinct features that resonate with different sleeping preferences, making them worthy of comparison.

Construction of the Nectar Mattress

The Nectar mattress stands at 11 inches tall, crafted from three layers of thoughtfully designed foam.

Top Layer: The surface features gel memory foam, specifically engineered to enhance cooling and comfort. The gel infusion helps mitigate heat retention—an all-too-common drawback of traditional memory foam—aiding those who may otherwise sleep hot.

Second Layer: Beneath the top layer is a 3-inch layer of memory foam that excels at pressure relief, body contouring, and providing deep compression support.

Transitional Layer: Also adding to the comfort is a transitional support layer, designed to balance the softer upper layers with adequate firm support.

Base Layer: Finally, a high-density support foam base provides a sturdy foundation for the entire mattress.

Construction of the Ghostbed Mattress

Similar in height to the Nectar, the Ghostbed also measures 11 inches and incorporates three distinct layers:

Top Layer: This mattress begins with an aerated latex foam layer that delivers both cooling and bounce, enhancing responsiveness and comfort.

Middle Layer: Below is a gel memory foam layer that supports deep compression and body contouring while promoting excellent cooling—an ideal feature for those who radiate warmth during sleep.

Base Layer: Like the Nectar, it concludes with a high-density foam bottom layer, reinforcing the structure and durability.

The covers differ significantly as well. The Nectar‘s blend of Tencel, cotton, and gel memory foam ensures a soft, breathable surface, while the Ghostbed features a combination of polyester and polypropylene, offering stretchiness and resilience.

Prices: Nectar vs. Ghostbed

When evaluating the costs, both brands provide competitive options:

Nectar Pricing

– Twin: $500
– Twin XL: $550
– Full: $700
– Queen: $795
– King: $900
– Cal King: $900

Nectar often runs promotions, currently offering $125 off along with two free pillows.

Ghostbed Pricing

– Twin: $495
– Twin XL: $650
– Full: $775
– Queen: $795
– King: $975
– Cal King: $995

Ghostbed frequently provides attractive discounts, with current offers of $50-$100 off plus a complimentary mattress protector.

Firmness and Support: Nectar vs. Ghostbed

When evaluating firmness, the Nectar mattress achieves a score of 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it a medium feel that’s versatile across a variety of sleeping positions. Though it has a slightly slower response time, the supportive memory foam layers ensure comfort for all types of sleepers.

In contrast, the Ghostbed offers a firmer feel at 6.5 out of 10. This balanced firmness caters to individuals who prefer a slightly resilient surface while avoiding excessive softness. The Ghostbed’s quick responsiveness makes it an excellent option for those who find denser foams cumbersome.

Cooling and Motion Transfer

Temperature regulation is crucial for a good night’s sleep. The Nectar, due to its memory foam construction, might not be ideal for those who tend to sleep hot, although the gel and Tencel cover do provide some cooling benefits. In terms of motion isolation, the Nectar excels, minimizing disturbances so that couples can share the bed without excessive interruptions.

Conversely, the Ghostbed shines in cooling capabilities, thanks to its latex foam blend. It effectively promotes airflow and heat dissipation, making it a smart choice for hot sleepers. Like the Nectar, the Ghostbed offers minimal motion transfer, providing a stable feel for partners who may toss and turn.

Warranty and Trial Period

Both brands offer favorable warranty terms and trial periods. The Nectar mattress comes with an impressive 365-night trial and a forever warranty, allowing users to return the mattress within the trial period for a full refund. Post-trial, any defects reported within the first five years are covered by a full replacement warranty.

The Ghostbed, while shorter, still provides a generous 101-night trial, coupled with a 20-year warranty for longevity and peace of mind.

Conclusion

Ultimately, both Nectar and Ghostbed stand out as excellent choices within the realm of online mattresses. If you prioritize contouring, pressure relief, and an extended return policy, Nectar is your go-to option. On the other hand, for those who seek quick responsiveness, a bit more bounce, and better temperature regulation, the Ghostbed may be your optimal pick. Weighing the features of Nectar vs. Ghostbed will empower you to make a decision that aligns perfectly with your sleep preferences, ensuring restful nights for years to come.
