Sateen Goose Down Pillow
This is the pillow to reach for if you like the sink-in, mouldable feel that only
real down gives you. The fill is high fill-power white goose down, which means it
takes up more space per ounce than cheaper down — so it lofts up tall, collapses
softly under your head, and springs back instead of staying flat. It is Responsible
Down Standard certified, so the fill is traceable to farms audited for animal
welfare.
The cover matters as much as the fill
Down on its own can feel warm. Here it sits inside a tightly woven cotton sateen
shell with a high thread count, which does two useful things: the smooth, cool
surface keeps the pillow from feeling stuffy, and the dense weave keeps the down
where it belongs instead of poking through the seams. The stitching is reinforced
at the edges, which is usually the first thing to fail on a down pillow.
Medium or Firm?
- Medium — less fill, a lower loft, and more give. The usual pick
for back sleepers and for anyone who likes to scrunch a pillow into shape. - Firm — more down packed in, so it sits taller and holds its
height longer through the night. Better for side sleepers, who need the pillow to
fill the gap between shoulder and ear.
Sizes
Standard, Queen and King. Match the pillow to the bed rather than to the size of
your head — a King bed with Standard pillows always looks under-dressed.
Care
Use a pillow protector and shake the pillow out each morning to redistribute the
down; that alone does more for the lifespan of a down pillow than anything else.
Spot clean the shell, and leave full cleaning to a launderer that handles down.
Questions?
Pillows are personal, and loft is easier to judge in person than on a screen.
