Resmed S+ Review

Resmed S+ Review 1

The ResMed S+ is the latest sleep tracking device to hit the market. It is unique in that you don’t have to wear it or come into contact with it at all. Once it is setup you it will monitor your sleep all night.

Unboxing & Setup

Resmed box

The Resmed S+ is very easy to setup. Before you even open the box, make sure you download and register the S+ App available for Android or Apple.  Once that is setup you can then unbox it and plug it in. As per the instructions, it should be positioned slightly higher than your mattress, so placing it on a nightstand is usually the perfect position. The box inside the stand that monitors your sleep is on a swivel so it can be tilted up or down to position it just right.

You’ll notice that when it is plugged in for the first time there’s an led indicator light that comes on. I was worried that this would stay on all night and disrupt my sleep but alas it does go away once your phone is paired correctly and you hit, “Sleep”.

Findings

I already own a Beddit and use it daily as it automatically starts tracking my sleep as soon as I get into bed. No need to remember to start it up. With the ResMed S+ I need to go into the app to tell it that I am ready to sleep. It’s not a huge hassle but on nights where I am really tired I can easily forget and that’s when its best to know how I slept.

The ResMed S+ app is really nice. It has a “Sleep Mentor” that gives you periodic sleep tips and asks you to get anything off your mind by recording a voice memo or writing it down in the app so you don’t have to worry about remembering.

When you register with the app, you are asked for your age, weight and other measures. The reason for this is that it will give you data to show how your sleep compares to people of a similar age and gender.

The tracking itself is very accurate, I did not expect that this device would be so sensitive to my movements. To test it out, you can view a motion chart in real time to see how it is tracking. Every little movement is tracked throughout the night.

Here’s a screenshot from my iPhone that shows what data the ResMed tracks.

From their website, here are the main features of the ResMEd S+

  • Measures your breathing and body movements throughout the night
  • Analyzes light, noise and temperature levels in your bedroom
  • Creates daily sleep scores and charts to help you understand your sleep pattern
  • Delivers personalized feedback based on your sleep pattern, bedroom environment and daily habits
  • Syncs seamlessly with your smartphone or tablet

By being able to track your breaths and motion the device has software that will determine your particular sleep state.

Another neat feature is that you can set an alarm to go off within a particular window of time and it will pick the best time to go off within that window depending on what state of sleep you are in. For instance, if you are still in deep sleep, it will wait until you reach light sleep to wake you, or at least wait as long as possible within that window of time that you set.

Conclusion

Since the ResMed S+ is a relatively new sleep tracking device as compared to the Beddit or wearable devices, I think there are more features on the horizon and that they are just getting started. Both the S+ and Beddit are way better than any wearable device. They can track your whole body movement and breaths which is essential for understanding how you sleep.

I would recommend of the ResMed S+ and Beddit. Each has their own advantages. I think the ResMed S+ does a better job of tracking your sleep state but the Beddit does not require you to start and end it each night which is something I can easily forget to do with the Resmed. This may change however with new software updates.

I like that the ResMed tracks your stages of sleep. The Beddit does something similar but doesn’t break it down into the categories that ResMed does.

The S+ now retails for only $50. Check out the Amazon Reviews to learn more.
