The Dohm Classic, formerly widely known as the Marpac sound machine, uses a real fan to create a continuous whooshing sound. My family used an earlier Marpac model at home and brought it on trips. The current product details below come from Yogasleep’s listing; my impressions refer to the machine we owned.
My family’s experience
In my original review, I said we had used our Marpac for about four years at home and packed it when visiting relatives or staying in hotels. I found the whooshing sound filled the room without feeling excessively noisy, and I liked the richer quality compared with some digital machines I had heard.
Turning the housing changed the sound, which made it easy to find a setting we liked. I considered our unit sturdy and reliable during that period. Those are my observations about one earlier machine, not a promise that every unit will last the same length of time or mask every hotel noise.
My original demonstration
The video shows the earlier Marpac model from my review. Listen for the change as the housing is adjusted; the current model’s appearance may differ.
How the current Dohm Classic works

Yogasleep describes a real fan motor, two speed settings and adjustable outer housing. The fan produces sound continuously rather than playing an audio recording. The Classic has physical controls and does not require a phone app.
The machine does not blow air across the bed like a room fan. It provides a steady background sound that can make some interruptions less noticeable, though effectiveness depends on the noise, volume and room. It is a sound-masking device, not treatment for a sleep disorder.
Dohm Classic vs. SNOOZ and digital options
| Option | Strength | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Dohm Classic | Real fan, two speeds and simple mechanical tone control | No app, timer or additional sound library |
| SNOOZ Original | Real fan with ten volume levels and optional app controls | Typically costs more; still focused on fan sound |
| Digital sound machine | May offer multiple noise colors and nature sounds | Sound quality and features vary; a recording may loop |
Neither mechanical nor digital sound is universally better. I prefer a real fan’s character, but another person may prefer multiple sound options or portability.
Placement, volume and travel
Start at a low, comfortable volume and adjust placement and tone before increasing the sound. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that if an infant sleep machine is used, it should be placed as far from the baby’s head as possible and used for a short time. Follow pediatric guidance for your family; do not assume any volume is safe solely because a device is sold for a nursery.
For travel, check the voltage printed on the adapter and the product listing. The U.S. Dohm Classic is a corded 120V model; a plug adapter alone does not convert higher-voltage power abroad.
Price, trial and warranty
Prices vary by color, seller and promotion. Yogasleep’s current product page lists a 30-night direct trial with returns within 30 days of shipment and a one-year limited warranty. Confirm shipping, return eligibility and costs before purchase; Amazon or another retailer may have different terms.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Dohm play a digital loop?
No. The Classic uses an internal fan to produce its sound mechanically.
Can I change the sound?
Yes. The two-speed switch changes fan speed and the housing adjusts the tone.
Does it need an app?
No. The Classic uses controls on the machine.
Will it block all outside noise?
No. It can make some background sounds less noticeable, but masking varies with the sound and room.
