The History of Molekule: A Journey of Science and Air Purification

Molekule’s story begins in the 1990s with Dharendra Yogi Goswami, a scientist motivated by a personal battle. His son suffered from severe asthma, pushing him to seek solutions to indoor air pollution’s harmful effects. This quest led him to develop photo-voltaic technology capable of breaking down air pollutants using ultraviolet light.

2014: Goswami’s children, Jaya and Dilip, patent the technology and found Transformair, laying the foundation for today’s Molekule.

2016: The company rebrands as Molekule, reflecting its focus on attacking pollutants at a molecular level.

2017: Molekule Air, the first consumer air purifier using PECO (Photoelectrochemical Oxidation) technology, enters the market with positive reception.

2018-2020: Continuous growth sees Molekule raise million-dollar investments and release the Molekule Air Mini, a smaller and more affordable version.

2021: Molekule’s Air Mini and Air Mini+ receive FDA clearance for use in medical settings, highlighting the technology’s potential.

2022: The company faces controversy amidst claims of profiting from the pandemic by suggesting PECO could destroy the coronavirus, later found unsubstantiated by independent research.

2023: Molekule merges with AeroClean Technologies, forming the publicly traded Molekule Group Inc. This expands their product portfolio and strengthens their presence in the air purification market.

Today: Molekule continues to develop new products and refine its PECO technology while facing competition from established players in the air purifier industry. Its future success hinges on balancing its unique technology with affordability, addressing scientific concerns, and proving its long-term efficacy in improving indoor air quality.

Key highlights:

    • Driven by a personal need and a focus on innovative technology.
    • Rapid growth and significant funding in the early years.
    • FDA clearance for medical use showcasing potential applications.
    • Controversy around COVID-19 claims highlighting the need for scientific rigor.
    • Recent merger expanding product reach and market presence.

Molekule’s story is still unfolding, and its future holds promise for innovation in air purification. However, challenges remain, demanding continuous improvement and evidence-based solutions to secure long-term success.

I recently received a free Molekule air purifier for review and the newest Molekule Air Mini. Clean air has a direct impact on sleep quality. If you find that you wake up sneezing or with a stuffy nose, you may want to look into cleaning up the air in your bedroom. I have tried many air purifiers and all of them clean the air with HEPA filtration technology. While these do a good job, the technology really hasn’t evolved much. That’s why I was so excited to be able to try the Molekule.

Here’s a video overview of the differences between the original Molekule and the Molekule Mini.

The Molecule is different in that it has a PECO filter which stands for Photo Electrochemical Oxidation. According to their website:

Developed over two decades by research scientists, PECO is an innovative technology that utilizes free radicals—the same radicals used to kill cancer cells—to oxidize pollutants. By using nanotechnology, PECO is able to destroy pollutants 1000 times smaller than what traditional HEPA filters can trap.

This is a strong claim and would certainly put it ahead of a HEPA filter in terms of effectiveness but I think what it really comes down to is will it improve your sleep and overall health? I put it to the test in our house and here are my findings.

Ordering and Unboxing the Molekule

Right now the only way to get this is through their official website.  There are no coupon codes for the Molekule but right now you can get a free six-month filter pack with your order. A $65 value.

After you place your order you will get an email confirmation and another email a few days later with tracking information. It will arrive in a box like the one below.

Molekule Box

I was really impressed with the care they put into packing it. It was fun to unbox. As you can see below it is protected in a white pouch which lessens the need for more plastic.

Molekule Bag

There’s really no physical setup required. Just plug it in. The filter you get in the box is an extra filter you can use when it comes time to replace it.

molecule accesories

You may have considered buying this just based on looks alone and I can’t blame you. Having another electronic box in your room is probably the last thing you want on your Pinterest board. This looks like some futuristic fuel cell with a leather strap. It is a clean, modern design that won’t look out of place.

Setting up the Molekule

Other reviews have a lot of complaints about the Molekule app and setup process. I found the setup to be a breeze. It could be that I received it when updates were made to the software but I didn’t have any issues.

To get it setup just download the app on the Play or Itunes store and power up the Molekule. The app will walk you through the process. Once it is setup on your wifi network, it will do an initial cleaning which can take an hour, give or take depending on your room size.

How Much Does the Molekule Cost?

This is the most expensive air purifier I have ever used. It currently retails for $799. Keep in mind though that you are getting a totally new technology that claims not only to trap but destroy pollutants 1,000 times smaller than what a HEPA filter can trap.

My Molekule Findings

I unbox lots of mattresses and any mattress made with foam will be prone to some off-gassing. Since I do this much more frequently than the average consumer, I normally have an air filter in my room. Unfortunately, they really aren’t good at eliminating volatile oganic compounds (VOCs).

The graph below shows how quickly a PECO filter, found in the Molekule will eliminate VOCs. This testing was done by the University of Minnesota and University of South Florida.

molekule vocs

You can view the full white paper here which explains the process in more detail.

The Molekule Air Mini

The Molekule mini is ideal for bedrooms or other small rooms. It uses the same PECO filter technology but in a smaller package.

Molekule Mini Box

The unboxing experience is the same and so is the build quality. The instructions are added to the box which makes setup a bit faster. One of their recommendations is to put it on your nightstand but there’s no way it would fit on my nightstand with my lamp, phone and everything else. Mine ended up on my dresser.

Molekule Unboxing 2

Again, rather than more plastic, they put the unit in a cloth bag.

Cloth Bag

Out of the box, it is basically ready to go.

Molekule mini open

The cord can wind itself underneath the unit for storage or to just get the right amount of cord to make your space neat. Again, great design by Molekule.  This cord is a two-prong rather than the three-prong on the bigger unit.

Molekule Mini Cord

There are 5 different levels for the Mini and there is currently no option for Wifi connectivity to the app but I think that may change in the near future. Below is a little video where you can hear it get louder as I increase the intensity.

At $399 the Molekule Mini is a more economical choice and if you have a small room, this would probably be the way to go.

My Molekule Air Purifier Recommendation

There are many facets to sleep hygiene, clean sheets, clean mattress, consistent bedtime, dark room, cool temperature, etc. What good is a nice mattress if it’s in a room where you are breathing polluted air? Investing in a good HEPA filter is a great start but having gone through many HEPA filters, I was really impressed with the PECO filter. After the first night my morning sneezing routing was almost completely eliminated. I now leave it on in silent mode.

One of the drawbacks is that fort he PECO filter to work its best, the light needs to be on. That can be problematic in a bedroom at night. Thankfully there is a night mode that keeps the filter running but turns the light on. I have night mode enabled but I did notice that it’s not quite as effective as eliminating any morning congestion. I think over time as I keep the filter running during the day, most of the pollutants in the room will be completely eliminated.

If you are thinking of investing in a filter, the Molekule is by far the best technology I have used and has made a real difference in my sleep quality and how I feel in the morning. While these would be great for every room of the house, they aren’t cheap and I think you will get the most bang for your buck by having one in your bedroom.

Is Molekule Better Than a HEPA Filter?

Molekule and HEPA filters are both air purification systems that help improve indoor air quality, but they utilize different technologies and have unique strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a comparison between the two:

Molekule:

  1. Technology: Molekule uses Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO) technology, which involves a light-activated nanocatalyst that breaks down pollutants at a molecular level, turning them into harmless substances.

  2. Effectiveness: Molekule claims to eliminate a wide range of pollutants, including bacteria, viruses, mold, allergens, and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), that HEPA filters may not be as effective at capturing.

  3. Filter replacement: The PECO filter in a Molekule device needs to be replaced every six months, while the pre-filter should be replaced every three months.

  4. Noise: Molekule devices tend to be relatively quiet, with noise levels similar to a HEPA filter.

  5. Price: Molekule air purifiers are generally more expensive than many HEPA-based air purifiers.

HEPA filter:

  1. Technology: HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters use a dense network of fibers to mechanically capture particles in the air, including dust, pollen, and pet dander.

  2. Effectiveness: HEPA filters can capture particles as small as 0.3 microns with 99.97% efficiency. They are very effective at removing allergens and particulate matter but may not be as efficient in eliminating viruses, bacteria, and VOCs.

  3. Filter replacement: HEPA filters generally need to be replaced every 12-18 months, depending on usage and environmental factors. Some devices may also include a pre-filter or activated carbon filter to remove larger particles and odors, which may require more frequent replacement.

  4. Noise: HEPA filters can be relatively quiet, depending on the device and fan speed settings.

  5. Price: HEPA-based air purifiers are available in a wide range of prices, with many affordable options on the market.

In summary, Molekule and HEPA filters both have their merits. Molekule’s PECO technology may be more effective at eliminating a wider range of pollutants, while HEPA filters excel at capturing allergens and particulate matter. Ultimately, the choice between the two will depend on your specific needs, priorities, and budget.

Is Molekule Worth It Long Term?

Positive aspects contributing to long-term satisfaction:

    • PECO technology: Some users report noticeable improvements in air quality and allergy symptoms due to Molekule’s PECO technology, which claims to destroy pollutants rather than capture them.
    • Quiet operation: Many find Molekule air purifiers to be quieter than traditional HEPA filters, especially at lower fan speeds.
    • Sleek design: The minimalist and modern design of Molekule units appeals to some users who prioritize aesthetics.
    • Good customer service: Many users report positive experiences with Molekule’s customer service team.

Negative aspects influencing long-term satisfaction:

    • High cost: Molekule air purifiers are significantly more expensive than many HEPA-based air purifiers with similar coverage areas.
    • Limited coverage area: Molekule units are typically designed for smaller rooms, and some users feel they are not powerful enough for larger spaces.
    • Replacement filter costs: PECO filters are more expensive than standard HEPA filters, adding to the ongoing cost of ownership.
    • Lack of certain features: Some users miss features like air quality sensors and smart home integration found in other air purifiers.
    • Mixed reports on effectiveness: While some users swear by Molekule’s effectiveness, others haven’t noticed a significant difference in air quality compared to cheaper HEPA options.

Overall, long-term satisfaction with Molekule seems to depend on individual priorities and expectations. If you prioritize a quiet, aesthetically pleasing air purifier with unique PECO technology and are willing to pay a premium price, Molekule could be a good fit. However, if you prioritize affordability, extensive coverage area, or advanced smart features, other air purifiers might offer better value.

Who Owns Molekule?

Molekule is a privately held company founded by Dr. Yogi Goswami, a scientist and engineer, along with his children Dilip Goswami and Jaya Rao. The company was established in 2014 and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. As a private company, Molekule is owned by its founders, private investors, and potentially employees with stock options. The specific ownership structure is not publicly available, but the Goswami family is central to the company’s leadership and development.

Does Molekule Detect Mold?

Molekule air purifiers do not directly detect mold in the air; rather, they use their proprietary Photo Electrochemical Oxidation (PECO) technology to eliminate a wide range of pollutants, including mold spores. PECO works by using a light-activated nanocatalyst to break down pollutants at the molecular level, turning them into harmless substances.

While Molekule air purifiers can effectively remove mold spores from the air, they do not have a built-in sensor or mechanism to specifically detect the presence of mold in your environment. To detect mold, you may need to use a mold testing kit or hire a professional mold inspector. However, by removing mold spores from the air, Molekule air purifiers can help to reduce the risk of mold growth and improve indoor air quality.

What is a Sleep Recliner?

A sleep recliner is a type of armchair that goes beyond reclining into a near-horizontal position, essentially functioning as both a chair and a bed. They come in various styles and features, but generally offer more adjustability and support than a standard recliner, making them suitable for sleeping or lounging for extended periods.

Here are some key characteristics of sleep recliners:

    • Full Reclining: Unlike regular recliners that typically stop at around 135 degrees, sleep recliners can recline almost flat (around 170 degrees or more) to provide a comfortable sleeping surface.
    • Adjustable Legrest: The legrest independently extends and retracts, allowing you to find the perfect position for your legs and feet.
    • Lumbar Support: Many sleep recliners have built-in lumbar support to maintain proper spinal alignment and prevent back pain.
    • Additional Features: Some models offer advanced features like massage functions, heat or cooling capabilities, USB ports for charging devices, and cup holders.

Here are some of the benefits of using a sleep recliner:

    • Improved Sleep: The reclined position can help alleviate acid reflux, sleep apnea, and back pain, leading to a more restful sleep.
    • Comfort and Relaxation: The adjustable features and padding allow you to find the perfect position for relaxation and watching TV.
    • Space Saving: A sleep recliner can be a good option for small apartments or studios where space is limited, as it combines the functionalities of a chair and a bed.
    • Post-Surgery Recovery: The reclining position can be helpful for recovering from surgery or injuries that make it difficult to get in and out of bed.

However, there are also some potential drawbacks to consider:

    • Cost: Sleep recliners can be more expensive than standard recliners due to their additional features and adjustability.
    • Not a Replacement for a Bed: While some people sleep comfortably in a recliner every night, they may not provide the same level of support and comfort as a proper mattress.
    • Size and Weight: Sleep recliners are generally larger and heavier than regular recliners, making them less portable.

Overall, sleep recliners can be a good choice for people who want a comfortable and versatile piece of furniture for relaxation, sleep, or post-surgery recovery. However, it’s important to consider your needs and budget before making a purchase.

Benefits of using a sleep recliner:

Health:

    • Improved breathing: The elevated position can ease sleep apnea and snoring by keeping airways open.
    • Reduced acid reflux: Gravity helps keep stomach contents down, alleviating heartburn and GERD discomfort.
    • Back pain relief: The adjustable angles and lumbar support can improve spinal alignment and alleviate back pain.
    • Improved circulation: Legs elevated above the heart can benefit circulation, especially for those with circulatory issues.

Comfort and convenience:

    • Adjustable for individual needs: Different users can find their perfect position for reading, watching TV, or sleeping.
    • Multifunctional: Saves space by combining a chair and bed in one.
    • Easier to get in and out of: Especially helpful for seniors or those with mobility limitations.
    • Additional features: Some models offer massage, heat, and other comfort enhancing functionalities.

Other benefits:

    • Recovery: Reclined position can aid post-surgery or injury recovery.
    • Relaxation: Great for unwinding and promoting overall well-being.

Why some people choose a sleep recliner over a mattress:

    • Specific health conditions: For people with sleep apnea, GERD, or severe back pain, a recliner can offer significant relief unavailable on a flat mattress.
    • Space constraints: Smaller living spaces benefit from multifunctional furniture like a sleep recliner.
    • Personal preference: Some individuals simply find recliners more comfortable for sleeping or relaxing than traditional mattresses.
    • Temporary solution: Recliners can be a good option for short-term needs, like guest room or post-surgery recovery.

It’s important to note that sleep recliners may not be a suitable replacement for a mattress for everyone. They lack the full support and pressure relief of a good quality mattress, and prolonged use might not provide optimal sleep for all individuals.

Key features of a sleep recliner:

Reclining capabilities:

    • Full reclination: Goes nearly flat (around 170 degrees) for a comfortable sleeping surface.
    • Independent legrest: Extends and retracts separately for leg comfort and support.
    • Footrest: Provides additional leg elevation and relaxation.

Comfort and support:

    • Plush cushioning: Offers pressure relief and comfort in various positions.
    • Lumbar support: Built-in or adjustable padding to maintain proper spinal alignment.
    • Headrest: Provides neck support and relaxation.
    • Armrests: Padded and positioned for comfort while sitting or reclining.

Adjustable features:

    • Power controls: Makes reclining and legrest adjustments effortless.
    • Heat and massage: For therapeutic relaxation and muscle soothing.
    • Zero-gravity positioning: Elevates legs and slightly reclines back for optimal comfort.
    • USB ports: Convenient for charging devices while relaxing.
    • Cup holders: Keeps beverages within reach while enjoying the recliner.

Additional features:

    • Lift assist: Helps users stand up from the seated position.
    • Swivel base: Allows for easy turning and adjustment of direction.
    • Heated seats: Provides warmth and comfort on cold days.
    • Cup warmers: Keeps beverages at a pleasant temperature.
    • Storage compartments: Convenient for storing books, remote controls, or other essentials.

Material and construction:

    • Durable frame: Ensures stability and support for long-term use.
    • High-quality upholstery: Breathable and comfortable, with options for easy cleaning.
    • Various styles and colors: To match your decor and preferences.

Things to consider when choosing a sleep recliner:

    • Your needs and preferences: Consider what features are most important to you, such as reclining capacity, size, and specific adjustments.
    • Budget: Sleep recliners can range in price depending on features and brand.
    • Health conditions: Consult a doctor if you have any health concerns to see if a sleep recliner is suitable for you.
    • Size and weight: Ensure the recliner fits your space and is easy to move around.

By considering these key features and your individual needs, you can choose the perfect sleep recliner for a comfortable and relaxing experience.

    • Some people prefer machines with a wider variety of sound options.
  • It’s always a good idea to read reviews before making a purchase.
Snooz Sound Machine

The Snooz white noise machine’s internal workings are designed to create a consistent and natural “whoosh” sound without the drawbacks of a typical fan. Here’s a breakdown of its key components:

1. Motor and Fan System:

    • A brushless DC motor drives a specially designed fan blade system.
    • The blade shape and airflow path are optimized to produce the signature white noise sound without generating much air movement.
    • This minimizes unwanted cold air blowing and keeps noise levels within safe ranges.

2. Sound Control and Amplification:

    • The fan noise passes through an acoustic chamber tuned to amplify and equalize specific frequencies for the desired white noise spectrum.
    • This controlled environment prevents harsh or unwanted tones from being amplified.
    • Additional electronic components can adjust the volume and tone further.

3. Power and Circuitry:

    • The Snooz uses a power adapter to convert AC power to DC for the motor and internal electronics.
    • Efficient circuitry minimizes energy consumption and heat generation.
    • Some models, like the Snooz Pro, also incorporate Bluetooth connectivity and app control features, requiring additional components and firmware.

4. Housing and Materials:

    • The outer casing is typically made of durable and fire-resistant plastic.
    • Some models feature fabric coverings for aesthetics and improved sound diffusion.
    • The design prioritizes noise containment and minimizes external vibrations for a calmer sleep environment.

Manufacturing Process:

While the exact details of the production process are proprietary, it’s likely to involve:

    • Component sourcing and quality control for individual parts like the motor, fan, and electronic components.
    • Assembly of the internal components within the housing, ensuring proper connections and sound channeling.
    • Testing and calibration of sound output, volume range, and functionality of additional features like timers and app connectivity.
    • Final quality checks and packaging for distribution.

The focus on using a real fan system, optimized airflow, and controlled sound amplification sets the Snooz apart from traditional white noise machines relying on looped recordings. This approach aims to provide a more natural and consistent soundscape for improved sleep quality.

A hand is holding a smartphone displaying an app interface with circular volume control set to 3. The app features buttons for sound, lights, timer, snooze, and settings. A blurred wooden table with objects is in the background.

the Snooz white noise machine does have an optional app available for both iOS and Android devices. It’s called the SNOOZ Sound. Sleep. app and you can download it for free from the App Store or Google Play.

While the Snooz machine can be fully operated and customized without the app, using the app unlocks some additional features and benefits that can further enhance your sleep experience:

Remote Control:

    • Adjust the volume and tone of the fan noise from your phone or tablet, eliminating the need to get up and touch the machine itself.

Timers:

    • Set the Snooz to turn on and off automatically at specific times. This is great for creating a sleep routine or ensuring the machine doesn’t run all night.

Fade In/Out:

    • Gently ease into sleep or wake up with gradually increasing or decreasing fan noise. This can be more natural and pleasant than abruptly turning the machine on or off.

Dark Mode:

    • Dim the app’s interface for a more relaxing experience in the dark.

Night Light:

    • Some Snooz models, like the Snooz Pro, include a built-in night light that can be controlled through the app. This can provide a soft glow for navigating your bedroom at night without disrupting your sleep.

Multiple Machines:

    • If you have multiple Snooz machines, you can control them all from the same app, making it convenient to manage the sound environment in different rooms.

Sound Library (Pro model only):

    • The Snooz Pro app also offers a small library of additional nature sounds, like rain or ocean waves, that you can mix with the white noise for a more personalized soundscape.

Overall, the Snooz app is a convenient and free way to get even more out of your Snooz white noise machine. It’s not essential for using the machine, but it can add some extra features and flexibility to your sleep routine.

Snooz Complaints

While the Snooz white noise machine generally receives positive reviews, there are some common complaints you might encounter:

Price: The Snooz is one of the more expensive white noise machines on the market, typically costing between $100 and $110. Some users might find this a barrier to entry, especially compared to simpler and cheaper options.

App Dependence: While some features like volume and tone can be controlled directly on the machine, accessing the full range of functionality, like timers and fade-in/out, requires the SNOOZ Sound. Sleep. app. This might be inconvenient for users who prefer not to rely on their phones or tablets in the bedroom.

Limited Sound Options: Unlike some white noise machines with nature sounds, rain, or ocean waves, the Snooz focuses solely on fan noise. Some users might miss the variety or prefer the calming qualities of natural sounds.

Night Light Brightness: Some users find the built-in night light, available on the Snooz Pro model, to be too dim or not adjustable enough for their needs.

Durability Concerns: A few reviewers have mentioned concerns about the durability of the machine’s controls, particularly the plastic buttons on the top.

Battery Life (Lack thereof): The Snooz needs to be plugged in to work, unlike some portable white noise machines with rechargeable batteries. This might be a limitation for travelers or those who want to use the machine in different locations.

Expected Lifespan:

    • Generally, well-made electronics like the Snooz are built to last several years with proper care. Some user reports mention using their Snooz machines for 5+ years without issue.
    • However, the actual lifespan can depend on several factors like:
        • Usage: More frequent use, especially at high volume, can shorten lifespan.
        • Environment: Exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, or moisture can affect longevity.
        • Power fluctuations: Surges or inconsistent power can damage internal components.

Battery vs. Plug-in:

    • Plug-in Snooz models: If you use the Snooz plugged in, the expected lifespan should be longer than battery-powered options.
    • Snooz Go (battery-powered model): The battery itself has a limited lifespan (typically 500-1000 charge cycles) and might need replacement eventually. However, the internal components should also last several years with proper care.

Factors for Replacement:

    • Decreased functionality: Noticeably quieter sound, flickering lights, or malfunctioning buttons could indicate wear and tear.
    • Physical damage: Cracks, scratches, or internal noise may suggest external damage affecting performance.
    • Outdated features: Newer models might offer additional features or improved sound quality you might desire.

Recommendation:

    • To get the best sense of your specific Snooz’s lifespan, consider its age, your usage patterns, and any noticeable issues.
  • If you’re concerned about its longevity, you can reach out to Tuft & Needle customer support for advice or check the warranty information.

Final Thoughts on the Snooz Sound Machine:

Pros:

    • High-quality, non-looping sound: The real fan inside generates natural white noise that’s consistent and pleasant, avoiding repetitive loops that can disrupt sleep.
    • Customizable sound experience: Adjustable volume and tone cater to individual preferences, while additional sound options like pink noise and fan sounds offer variety.
    • Portable and versatile: Compact design makes it perfect for travel and use at home, with optional nightlight adding functionality.
    • Positive user reviews: The Snooz consistently receives high praise for its effectiveness in improving sleep quality.
    • App integration (optional): For those who want it, the free app provides remote control, scheduling, and fade in/out features.

Cons:

    • Price: The Snooz is pricier than some basic white noise machines.
    • Limited features compared to some smart models: No clock, alarm, or nature sounds for some users.
    • Some durability concerns: A few reports of minor issues with the build quality.

Overall:

The Snooz sound machine stands out for its unique, high-quality sound and focus on creating a peaceful sleep environment. Its portability, customizable options, and positive user reviews make it a strong contender for anyone seeking a sound machine to improve their sleep. However, the price tag and lack of certain features might deter some budget-conscious or tech-savvy users.

Endorsement:

If you prioritize natural, non-looping sound and are willing to pay a premium for quality and portability, the Snooz sound machine is an excellent choice. However, if you’re on a tight budget or crave more features, consider exploring other options before making your decision.

Ultimately, the best sound machine is the one that helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Weigh the pros and cons of the Snooz against your individual needs and preferences to determine if it’s the right investment for you.

Aizome Sheets Review: Stunning Quality for Effortless Sleep

Aizome Sheets

Aizome sheets are crafted through a meticulous process that emphasizes using natural materials and traditional techniques. Here’s a breakdown of the key stages:

1. Sourcing Organic Cotton:

    • Aizome uses GOTS-certified organic cotton, ensuring responsible farming practices and no harmful chemicals are used throughout the growth and processing. This cotton boasts superior softness and breathability compared to conventional cotton.

2. Natural Dyeing:

    • Instead of synthetic dyes, Aizome embraces traditional Japanese Aizome dyeing, utilizing medicinal herbs like indigo, nutgall, and madder root. These herbs not only imbue the sheets with unique, vibrant colors but also offer potential therapeutic benefits like promoting relaxation and reducing inflammation.

3. Dyeing Technique:

    • The Aizome process involves repeated immersion and oxidization cycles over several days. Each dip intensifies the color and imbues it deeper into the fabric’s fibers. This painstaking technique creates the characteristically rich and long-lasting hues of Aizome sheets.

4. Weaving and Finishing:

    • The dyed cotton is woven into luxurious fabrics like sateen or percale, offering different levels of smoothness and breathability. No harsh chemicals or finishes are used, preserving the cotton’s natural softness and hypoallergenic properties.

5. Quality Control:

    • Aizome prioritizes quality and sustainability throughout the production process. They partner with experienced dyers in Japan and China, upholding rigorous quality control standards. Additionally, they prioritize eco-friendly practices like water conservation and responsible waste management.

Ultimately, Aizome sheets represent a confluence of nature’s bounty and artisanal craftsmanship. Their commitment to organic materials, traditional techniques, and meticulous quality control sets them apart, offering a unique and potentially beneficial sleep experience.

Aizome is the first bedding company I have come across to incorporate organic cotton and hand-dyed indigo into their sheets. Often it is hard to find organic cotton sheets with vibrant colors because it requires harsh chemicals. Aizome sheets are dyed with indigo which is a plant-based dye that will give your sheets a blue tint. A basic queen size set which includes a top and bottom sheet along with two pillowcases retails for $272.

Overview of Aizome Bedding

Indigo has been around for thousands of years but for the last 100 years, most textiles including jeans are made with synthetic indigo. Synthetic indigo is made with Aniline which doesn’t seem all that great for humans. Natural indigo, on the other hand, seems to be safer and more sustainable. While making natural indigo sheets is more expensive, they look and feel better. You can order your Aizome sheets directly from the Aizome website. They will arrive in a box like the one below. On the right-hand side is a tag showing what pieces are in the box so you know what you are getting before you open it.

Aizome 2 These sheets are soft right out of the box. I also found that after washing them they don’t lose any of the original color so that probably means they don’t bleed much either. Another distinguishing feature is that the fitted sheets is put together with cords. Most sheets are just hemmed around the corners with an elastic band. Aizome fitted sheets These sheets are not cheap so if they are out of your budget you can buy separates and build your set slowly. If anything, I recommend trying out the pillowcases as that is where you rest your head at night and where you will reap the most benefit. Here’s a picture of the pillowcases. Aizome Pillow cases As you can see, the stitching is very clean and folded into the sheet so it can’t be seen. Aizome stitching

Ultimately, the best way to find the perfect Costco mattress is to try them out in person. Costco locations have designated mattress areas where you can relax and test different models. Be sure to consider your sleep preferences, budget, and any physical concerns you may have when making your decision.

Here are some additional tips for choosing a Costco mattress:

    • Read online reviews: Get a sense of what other customers think of the mattresses you’re considering.
    • Compare prices: Costco mattresses are often competitively priced, but it’s still a good idea to compare prices with other retailers to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
  • Consider the return policy: Costco has a generous return policy, so you can always return your mattress if you’re not satisfied.
Costco Mattresses

Why are Costco Mattresses So Cheap?

Costco mattresses are often more affordable than those found at other retailers for several reasons:

  1. Bulk purchasing: Costco operates on a warehouse model, which means they buy products in large quantities directly from manufacturers. This allows them to negotiate better prices and pass on the savings to their customers.

  2. Membership fees: Costco is a membership-based retailer, which means customers pay an annual fee to access their products and services. These fees provide Costco with a steady revenue stream, enabling them to offer lower prices on their products, including mattresses.

  3. Limited selection: Costco typically carries a more limited selection of products compared to traditional mattress retailers. By offering fewer options, they can focus on high-quality, popular models and negotiate better deals with manufacturers.

  4. Lower overhead costs: Costco’s warehouse-style stores have lower overhead costs compared to traditional retail stores. They require less expensive fixtures and displays, and the simple, no-frills shopping environment allows Costco to save on expenses, which in turn results in lower prices for customers.

  5. Private label offerings: Costco also sells their own private label mattresses, such as the Kirkland Signature line. These mattresses are manufactured by well-known brands but sold under Costco’s label, often at a lower price than their branded counterparts.

Overall, Costco’s business model allows them to offer quality mattresses at more affordable prices by focusing on bulk purchasing, reducing overhead costs, and leveraging membership fees to provide value to their customers.

How Many Mattresses Does Costco Sell A Year?

Since Costco is a large multinational corporation with a wide range of products, they typically do not release specific sales figures for individual product categories like mattresses.

However, it’s safe to assume that Costco sells a significant number of mattresses each year due to their competitive prices, vast customer base, and reputation for offering quality products.

Costco Mattress Trial and Warranty

Costco is known for having a very generous return policy. They offer a satisfaction guarantee on all their products, including mattresses, which allows customers to return items for any reason within a certain time frame for a full refund.

The specifics of the return policy vary depending on the product, but in general, most items can be returned within 90 days of purchase. Costco also offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee on their Kirkland Signature private label products, which means that if you’re not satisfied with one of their products at any time, you can return it for a full refund or exchange.

This lenient return policy has helped build a reputation for Costco as a company that values customer satisfaction and is willing to stand behind the products they sell. It has also contributed to the company’s success, as many customers feel comfortable making purchases at Costco knowing that they can easily return them if they’re not satisfied.

Costco offers a satisfaction guarantee on their mattresses, which means that you can return the mattress for any reason within the specified trial period for a full refund. The trial period varies depending on the mattress you purchase, but it is typically around 90 days.

In terms of warranty, most Costco mattresses come with a manufacturer’s warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship. The length of the warranty varies depending on the mattress, but it is typically between 10 and 20 years. If you encounter any issues with your mattress within the warranty period, you can contact the manufacturer directly to make a claim.

It’s important to note that the warranty and trial periods may differ for specific models or brands of mattresses sold at Costco, so it’s always a good idea to read the product information carefully before making a purchase. Additionally, be sure to keep your receipt and any other documentation related to your purchase in case you need to make a warranty claim in the future.

Costco Mattress Delivery and Removal

Costco offers delivery and removal services for their mattresses. The delivery options and fees may vary depending on your location and the specific mattress you purchase, but in general, Costco offers free standard delivery to your doorstep for most of their mattresses.

If you prefer, you can also opt for an upgraded delivery service, such as White Glove Delivery, which includes in-home delivery and setup of your new mattress, as well as removal of your old mattress. This service may incur additional fees.

In terms of mattress removal, Costco offers a service called Mattress Haul-Away, which allows you to have your old mattress removed at the same time your new one is delivered. The cost for this service varies depending on your location and the size of your mattress.

It’s important to note that delivery and removal services may not be available in all areas, so it’s a good idea to check with your local Costco store or their website to confirm the options available in your area.

Costco Mattress Quality

Costco offers a range of mattresses from different brands, and the quality of these mattresses can vary depending on the specific brand and model. However, in general, many of the mattresses sold at Costco are known for their high quality and competitive pricing.

Costco’s private label brand, Kirkland Signature, offers a variety of mattresses that are highly rated by customers for their comfort and durability. These mattresses are often manufactured by well-known brands, but sold under the Kirkland Signature label, which allows Costco to offer them at a lower price than other retailers.

In addition to Kirkland Signature mattresses, Costco also carries mattresses from other well-known brands, such as Sealy, Stearns & Foster, and Tempur-Pedic. These brands are known for their high-quality materials and advanced technologies, and many of their mattresses have received positive reviews from customers.

Overall, while the quality of Costco mattresses can vary depending on the specific brand and model, many customers have found that they offer a great value for the price and are comparable in quality to other store brands.

It’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer’s recommendations for the best support system for your specific mattress.

Best Time of Year to Buy a Mattress at Costco

Costco typically offers sales and promotions on mattresses throughout the year, so it’s always worth checking their website or your local store for current deals. However, there are a few times of year when it may be particularly advantageous to buy a mattress at Costco:

  1. Holidays: Costco often offers sales on mattresses around major holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Black Friday. Keep an eye out for promotions during these times if you’re in the market for a new mattress.

  2. End of Season: At the end of a particular season, such as the end of summer, Costco may offer discounts on certain mattresses to make room for new inventory.

Minocasa has one of the most affordable hybrid mattresses you can buy, the Mino Hybrid. This is a spring and foam mattress that comes roll packed in a box and shipped free to your door. Added to that you get a 180-night trial which is more generous than the typical 100-night trial and a 10-year limited warranty.  Below are my findings on the mattress as well as how it compares to similar hybrid mattresses of this construction in this price range.

Overview of the Minocasa Hybrid

Ordering and Unboxing the Minocasa

Below is the queen size Mino mattress I received for review. It’s a tall box because they don’t fold the mattress when it is roll packed. This makes it less prone to indentations and damage.

Minocasa Box

It is tightly wrapped in plastic to keep away moisture and dirt. Once you cut into the plastic it comes to life quickly.

Minocasa out of the box

Here’s a closeup of the fabric panel soon after unboxing.

Minocasa Fabric

Construction of the Minocasa Mino Hybrid

Below are the construction details of the Mino mattress as listed on the Minocasa website.

Minocasa Construction

My Minocasa Mino Hybrid Findings

As you can see below, this mattress doesnt sink much. This is mostly because there isn’t a lot of foam layering on top. There is a foam transition and comfort layer but much less than most mattresses I reviewed. However, it is adequate and you won’t feel the coil system underneath.

Mino sink

Here is a short clip of me dropping a 14lb. bowling ball on the Mino mattress. You can see from the impact that it bounces back right away and will bounce higher than a mattress with more foam at the top layers.

Who is the Minocaso Mino Hybrid For?

If you’re on a budget, this is a great choice. It’s also great for people that want the contouring that springs provide with a little pressure relief. You won’t sink into this mattress much and they don’t over layer foam so it won’t trap as much heat as softer mattresses.

Hot sleepers that want a firmer mattress will appreciate the Mino. It will also work for side sleepers that want a firmer feel but don’t expect the contouring you will find in mattresses with more foam.

My Minocasa Mino Hybrid Recommendation

This is a top pick for budget mattress shoppers looking for a hybrid mattress that is OEKO-Tex Certified, and Certipur-US Certified it’s a great pick. This mattress is made in Malaysia so if you are looking for made in USA mattress, you may want to look elsewhere but given its certifications, this is a great mattress.

Minocasa Complaints

Mattress firmness: While the Mino Hybrid is advertised as a medium-firm mattress, some customers find it to be too firm, especially for side sleepers.

Image of Minocasa Mino Hybrid mattressO

Edge support: Some reviewers say the mattress lacks edge support, making it feel like you could roll off if you sleep close to the edge.

Durability: A few customers have mentioned experiencing sagging or indentations in the mattress after just a few months of use.

Off-gasing: Some reviewers report a noticeable odor when the mattress is first unboxed, which can take several days to dissipate.

Return policy: The return policy can be difficult to navigate, with some customers reporting issues getting a full refund.

Customer service: While most customers report positive experiences with Minocasa’s customer service, a handful have encountered issues with responsiveness or resolution of problems.

It’s important to note that these are just a few of the potential complaints you might come across. The vast majority of Minocasa mattress reviews are positive, highlighting the mattress’s comfort, cooling properties, and value for the price. Ultimately, whether or not a Minocasa mattress is right for you depends on your individual needs and preferences.

Valyou Furniture began its journey in Hawaii in 2018. Their founders, inspired by the beauty of the islands, saw a gap in the local market for trendy and stylish furniture at reasonable prices. Residents often had to choose between overpriced options or waiting months for imports.

To bridge this gap, the founders opened the first Valyou Furniture store in Kapolei, Hawaii. Their mission was simple: to provide accessible and fashionable furniture for everyone. They focused on offering contemporary designs and high-quality materials without the hefty price tag associated with traditional furniture stores.

Their approach proved successful, and their first store quickly gained popularity. The company then opened its second location in Hawaii, solidifying its dominance in the local market.

Here are some key factors that contributed to Valyou Furniture’s early success:

    • Market gap: They filled a niche by offering stylish and affordable furniture options that weren’t readily available in Hawaii.
    • Direct sourcing: They cut out the middlemen and manufactured their own furniture, enabling them to offer competitive prices.
    • Focus on trends: They kept their inventory updated with the latest trends, catering to the desires of design-conscious customers.
    • Customer service: Their commitment to excellent customer service helped build trust and loyalty among buyers.

Overview of the Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress

The Nolah Evolution mattress is available in three firmness levels:

Here’s a quick video overview from unboxing to my final thoughts.

Construction of the Nolah Evolution 15 Hybrid Mattress

Below are the construction details as listed on the Nolah website.

Nolah Evolution Construction

The Nolah Evolution mattress is a hybrid mattress that uses a combination of foam and coils. It has the following layers:

  • Quilted Euro-top cover: This layer is made of soft foam and provides a comfortable surface to sleep on.
  • AirFoamICE™: This layer is made of graphite-infused foam and provides pressure relief and cooling.
  • HDMax™ Tri-Zone™ coils: These coils provide support and zoned pressure relief.
  • High-density polyfoam base: This layer provides a solid foundation for the mattress.

The Nolah Evolution mattress is designed to provide a comfortable and supportive sleep surface for all sleepers. It is particularly well-suited for people who suffer from back pain or other sleep disorders.

My Nolah Evolution 15 Findings

Here’s what the mattress looked like right when I unboxed it. A lot of time mattresses in a box will still look wrinkly or flat. This one sprung to life and looked great within minutes. I also found that there wasn’t all that much off-gassing. You could sleep on this mattress the same day after unboxing assuming you unbox it in the morning or early afternoon.

Nolah Evolution Unboxed

There are lots of great features with this mattress and one of them is handles. Because it is so heavy, they do come in handy if you want to rotate or move the mattress. The stitching is heavy-duty and they will hold up through multiple moves.

nolah evolution handle

What stood out most to me is the pillowtop. This is the kind of feel you get with a higher quality mattress. Pillowtops can be trick though. If you get one too soft, you are prone to sinking in too much and potentially rolling towards your partner at night. This will lead both of you towards a crater in the middle of the bed. That’s not the case with this mattress though. You certainly sink in but the spring system underneath is designed to prevent you from rolling towards each other.

nolah sinkage

Here I am sleeping on my side. As you can see the alignment here is great. I have wider shoulders since I am tall but what’s important is that my hips are well supported while I can still sink into the mattress.

nolah evolution side sleeping

This mattress is also suitable for back sleeping. I am not quite as flat as I would be with a firmer mattress but I definitely wasn’t uncomfortable and if I want to be flatter I could get a thinner pillow. That said, I don’t recommend this mattress for stomach sleepers. Because it has a thicker pillowtop it won’t provide optimal support.

Nolah back sleeping

Here’s a look inside the mattress. What you don’t see is the padding inside the pillowtop which makes up another layer. You can see the graphite-infused foam in gray and the high-density foam underneath. The final layer is a firm layer of foam that borders the entire mattress to provide good side support. I think this was a great choice because rather than springs, the foam can be made even firmer so you can sleep right up to the edge without feeling like you will roll off.

nolah evolution inside

The Nolah Evolution mattress is a great choice for anyone looking for a comfortable and supportive mattress. It has a medium-firm feel that is perfect for most sleepers, and it provides excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment. The mattress is also very breathable and sleeps cool, making it a great option for hot sleepers.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the Nolah Evolution mattress:

Pros:

  • Medium-firm feel that is perfect for most sleepers
  • Excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment
  • Very breathable and sleeps cool
  • Comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty

Cons:

  • Can be a bit pricey
  • Some sleepers may find it too firm
  • The coils can make some noise when you move around

Overall, the Nolah Evolution mattress is a great choice for anyone looking for a comfortable and supportive mattress. It is perfect for most sleepers and provides excellent pressure relief and spinal alignment. The mattress is also very breathable and sleeps cool, making it a great option for hot sleepers.

Final Thoughts on the Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress

Creating a good, side sleeper mattress is tricky. I have found over the years reviewing mattresses that a hybrid, spring, and foam mattress is your best bet. But within that category, you need to figure your optimal balance of soft vs support. Everybody is different and I think the Nolah Evolution will appeal to side sleepers that prefer a plush feel that is designed to sleep cool without sinking in too much.

Nolah Evolution vs. Saatva

Fiberglass in Mattresses: Risky Consequences Revealed!

Fiberglass in mattresses

Dangers of Fiberglass in Mattresses

Fiberglass is a material made up of tiny, glass-like fibers that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. It’s sometimes used in mattresses to meet fire safety standards, but there are potential health risks associated with exposure.

Here are some of the dangers of fiberglass in mattresses:

    • Skin irritation: Fiberglass can cause itching, redness, and rashes when it comes into contact with the skin. The tiny fibers can become embedded in the skin, making it even more irritating.
Image of Skin irritation caused by fiberglass mattress
    • Eye irritation: Fiberglass can cause eye irritation, redness, and tearing. If fibers become embedded in the eye, they can cause more serious damage, such as scratches or corneal scarring.
    • Respiratory problems: Inhaling fiberglass particles can irritate the lungs and airways, leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Long-term exposure to fiberglass has been linked to more serious respiratory problems, such as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis.
Image of Respiratory problems caused by fiberglass mattress

How to reduce your risk of exposure to fiberglass in mattresses:

    • If you’re buying a new mattress, choose one that doesn’t contain fiberglass. There are many safe and effective alternatives available.
    • If you already have a mattress that contains fiberglass, make sure to keep the cover on it. This will help to prevent the fibers from escaping.
    • Invest in a mattress protector. This will add an extra layer of protection between you and the fiberglass.
    • Wash your bedding regularly. This will help to remove any fiberglass particles that have accumulated on your sheets and blankets.
    • Be careful when removing or cleaning the mattress cover. Wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from exposure.

If you think you may have been exposed to fiberglass, it’s important to see a doctor. They can assess your symptoms and recommend treatment.

Fiberglass mattresses have been a topic of concern for many consumers due to the potential health risks associated with their use. Fiberglass is a common material used in the construction of mattresses, and while it is an effective insulator, it can pose a serious health risk if it becomes airborne.

When fiberglass fibers become airborne, they can easily be inhaled or come into contact with the skin. This can lead to a range of health issues, including irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Long-term exposure to fiberglass can also cause more serious health problems, such as lung cancer.

To mitigate these risks, many manufacturers now use alternative materials, such as foam or cotton, in the construction of their mattresses. However, some cheaper or lower-quality models may still contain fiberglass, so it is important for consumers to carefully research the materials used in any mattress they are considering purchasing.

If you currently have a fiberglass mattress, it is important to take precautions to prevent the fibers from becoming airborne. This can include using a mattress cover, vacuuming the mattress regularly, and avoiding cutting or tearing the mattress. If you are experiencing any health issues that may be related to fiberglass exposure, it is important to consult with a medical professional immediately.

Overall, while fiberglass mattresses may be effective insulators, the potential health risks associated with their use make them a less desirable option for many consumers.

    • They might be able to help you mediate with the manufacturer or offer alternative solutions like store credit or exchange.

Fiberglass Abatement

Getting rid of fiberglass particles from your room if your mattress has fiberglass can be tricky, but it’s important to do it thoroughly to protect your health. Here are the steps you can follow:

Preparation:

    1. Protect yourself: Before you start, wear protective gear like gloves, a mask, and long sleeves and pants to avoid skin irritation. Consider wearing goggles if you’re concerned about eye irritation.

    1. Move bedding and other items: Remove all bedding, blankets, pillows, and any other fabric items from the room. Wash them in hot water with a good quality detergent, and dry them on low heat. This will help to remove any fiberglass particles that have attached to them.

    1. Open windows and doors: If possible, open windows and doors to create good ventilation in the room. This will help to disperse fiberglass particles in the air and make it easier to remove them.

Cleaning:

    1. HEPA vacuuming: The most effective way to remove fiberglass particles is to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. HEPA filters are designed to capture very small particles, including fiberglass. Vacuum the entire room thoroughly, paying close attention to areas where fiberglass particles are likely to have accumulated, such as the floor, mattress frame, and furniture.
      Image of HEPA vacuum cleaner
    1. Lint rollers: Use lint rollers to pick up fiberglass particles from surfaces that are difficult to vacuum, such as walls, baseboards, and furniture upholstery.
    1. Damp cloths: For surfaces that can’t be vacuumed or rolled, use damp cloths to wipe away fiberglass particles. Be sure to wear gloves when handling the cloths, and dispose of them properly after use.

Additional tips:

    • Avoid dry dusting: Dry dusting can stir up fiberglass particles and make them airborne. Opt for vacuuming or damp cloths instead.
    • Change air filters: After cleaning, change the air filters in your air conditioner and furnace. This will help to remove any fiberglass particles that have been circulated through the air.
    • Monitor your health: If you experience any symptoms of fiberglass exposure, such as skin irritation, eye irritation, or respiratory problems, see a doctor immediately.

Remember: It’s important to be patient and thorough when cleaning up fiberglass particles. It may take several rounds of cleaning to completely remove all of the fibers from your room.

Is it Still Legal to Make Mattresses with Fiberglass?

it is still legal to have fiberglass in mattresses in most parts of the world, including the United States. This is because the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requires all mattresses sold in the U.S. to meet a certain level of fire safety. Fiberglass is one of the materials that can be used to meet this standard.

However, there are some concerns about the health risks associated with fiberglass exposure. Fiberglass can cause skin irritation, eye irritation, and respiratory problems. Inhaling fiberglass particles can even lead to more serious health problems, such as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about fiberglass in mattresses:

    • Many consumers are unaware that their mattresses contain fiberglass. Mattress manufacturers are not required to disclose the presence of fiberglass on the label.
    • There are safe and effective alternatives to fiberglass that can be used to meet fire safety standards. Some mattress manufacturers are already using these alternatives in their products.
  • California is the only state in the U.S. that has banned the use of fiberglass in mattresses. The ban will take effect in 2027.

Fiberglass is a commonly used fire retardant in mattresses, but due to potential health concerns, many people are looking for alternatives. Here are some popular fiberglass alternatives in mattress construction:

Natural materials:

    • Wool: Wool is naturally fire-resistant and has excellent temperature regulation properties. It’s a popular choice for organic and luxury mattresses.
    • Cotton: Cotton is naturally flame-retardant and breathable. It’s often used in mattress covers and quilted layers.
    • Kapok: Kapok is a plant-based fiber with natural fire-resistant properties and good moisture absorption. It’s becoming increasingly popular as a mattress filling material.
    • Plant-based thistle: This thistle plant fibers are used by some mattress brands like Saatva as a natural fire barrier.

Chemical-based alternatives:

    • Polycarbonate: This synthetic fire retardant is effective and widely used. However, it’s non-breathable and may off-gas harmful chemicals.
    • Sodium polyphosphate: This is a mineral-based fire retardant that is considered safe and non-toxic. It’s used by some mattress brands like Avocado.
    • Melamine: This is a synthetic fire retardant that is relatively new to the mattress industry. While it’s considered safe, its long-term effects are still under study.

Other alternatives:

    • Barrier technology: Some mattress brands use a special fabric barrier woven into the mattress cover to meet fire safety standards. This eliminates the need for any fire retardant filling materials.
    • Encapsulation: Encapsulating the mattress foam in a separate fabric layer can help to prevent fire from spreading.

Things to consider when choosing a mattress without fiberglass:

    • Price: Mattresses with natural fire retardants like wool or kapok tend to be more expensive than those with fiberglass or synthetic alternatives.
    • Performance: Some alternative materials may offer different levels of fire protection, comfort, and breathability than fiberglass.
  • Certifications: Look for mattresses with certifications from organizations like CertiPUR-US or Oeko-Tex, which guarantee the absence of harmful chemicals.

A Symphony of Sounds

One of Loftie’s standout features is its array of alarms that sound more like ethereal soundscapes, reminiscent of wind patterns and singing bowls. These unique alarms provide a serene start to your day, far removed from the jarring sounds we’ve become accustomed to from our smartphones.

In addition to this, Loftie offers a spectrum of noise machines that include white, brown, red, gray, blue, and pink noises. These serene soundscapes can be utilized throughout the day, whether you’re working, relaxing, or winding down for sleep.

The Loftie Effect: A Two-Week Test Run

The impact of the Loftie alarm clock extends beyond its unique features—it fundamentally transforms your morning routine. It doesn’t just wake you up; it gently coaxes you out of sleep, lending a sense of calm to the start of your day. The result is a shift in tech habits, often leading to reduced smartphone usage first thing in the morning.

However, the transition to Loftie may come with a learning curve. It’s crucial to remember, for instance, that the clock can only hold an unplugged charge for a few hours. But once you’ve found your rhythm with Loftie, the benefits far outweigh the initial adjustment period.

Loftie: An Essential Wellness Tool

Loftie is not just another alarm clock; it’s a wellness tool that bridges the gap between technology and a healthier lifestyle. If you’re weary of starting your day with an onslaught of emails, or if you enjoy the soothing sound of waterfalls, Loftie could be the perfect addition to your routine.

Loftie’s Soundscapes: A Sonic Journey

The Loftie alarm clock’s soundscapes are one of its most compelling features. Rather than the cacophonous blares of traditional alarms or the repetitive tunes of smartphone notifications, Loftie’s alarms are a soothing collection of natural and ethereal sounds. Imagine being gently awakened by the subtle sounds of wind chimes or the soft melody of singing bowls—a tranquil start to your day.

And the sonic journey doesn’t end there. Loftie’s noise machine offers a spectrum of colors, each with its unique characteristics. Choose from white, brown, red, gray, blue, or pink noise—whatever suits your mood or task. Use them during work for improved focus, or during your wind-down routine for a serene transition to sleep.

Loftie’s Bedtime Stories: A New Way to Doze Off

Bedtime stories aren’t just for kids anymore. Loftie offers a selection of soft-spoken stories designed to lull adults to sleep. These stories are a welcome alternative to the harmful blue light of screens that can disturb your sleep. Imagine drifting off to a gentle narration about King Arthur’s history—Loftie makes it possible.

Connecting Loftie to your Wi-Fi network is easy, but it’s essential to remember that your internet connection’s quality can affect Loftie’s performance. Even the smartest devices can struggle with sub-par internet services, so ensure you have a reliable connection for the best experience.

After two weeks of testing, it’s clear that Loftie offers a transformative approach to waking up. Its innovative design, calming soundscapes, and respect for data privacy make it an essential wellness tool in the modern digital age. While it may require some adjustment from the usual smartphone-based alarms, the benefits of Loftie are well worth the transition.

Loftie is more than just an alarm clock—it’s a well-thought-out device that understands the importance of a peaceful wake-up routine and respects the need for privacy. By working with your smartphone, not against it, Loftie provides a healthier, more balanced start to your day.

Loftie Complaints

While the Loftie alarm clock has earned praise for its unique design and calming features, it’s not without its downsides. Here are some common complaints users have voiced:

App issues:

    • Setup struggles: Some users find the initial setup process with the app complex and time-consuming. Connecting to Wi-Fi can be finicky, and downloading content can take a while.
    • Limited functionality: Once the clock is set up, the app becomes less useful. Users wish they could control more features like sound selection and customization directly from the app instead of having to navigate the physical clock menus.
    • Clunky interface: Some find the app layout and navigation unintuitive and cumbersome.

Hardware concerns:

    • Sound quality: While the Loftie’s speaker is decent, some users find its sound quality below par for the price point, especially when compared to dedicated speakers.
    • Dim display: The auto-adjustment for the clock’s brightness can make it too dim during the day, requiring manual adjustments.
    • Limited alarm options: Though Loftie offers a variety of calming sounds for alarms, some users miss customizable or traditional alarm tones.

Other grievances:

    • Subscription cost: The required subscription for access to the sound library and wellness content can feel like an ongoing expense for some users.
    • Limited customization: Although Loftie offers some personalization options, some users desire more control over the clock’s look and feel.
    • Lack of physical snooze button: While Loftie’s gentle wind-down alarm is intended to replace the snooze function, some users miss the immediate snooze option for those mornings when they need a few extra minutes.

It’s important to note that these are just some of the reported complaints, and not everyone experiences these issues. However, it’s helpful to be aware of potential downsides before making a purchase decision.

If you’re considering a Loftie alarm clock, it’s best to weigh its unique features against these potential drawbacks to see if it aligns with your needs and preferences. You may also want to research alternatives that offer similar functionalities or address specific concerns you might have.

Mattress Springs: Stunning Innovations for Effortless Sleep

4 HybridBaseFoamwithIndividuallyPocketedSprings

When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, the mattress you choose plays a crucial role. While there are various components that go into making a mattress comfortable and supportive, one of the most important elements is the spring system. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the history of springs in mattresses, exploring how they’ve evolved over time and why they’re so important in creating the perfect sleeping surface.

Springs in mattresses refer to a series of coils or wires that are strategically placed within the mattress to provide support and bounce. These springs can come in various shapes and sizes, but the basic function is the same: to create a surface that conforms to your body while also providing the necessary support to keep your spine in proper alignment.

The role of springs in mattresses cannot be overstated. Without them, a mattress would be little more than a soft, flat surface that would not provide the necessary support for a good night’s sleep. The springs in a mattress work together to distribute weight evenly, prevent sagging, and offer the necessary bounce to make it easier to move around and get comfortable. As such, the type and quality of the springs in a mattress can have a significant impact on how well you sleep.

History of Mattress Springs

Springs in mattresses have a long and varied history, with the earliest forms of mattresses being filled with hay or other natural fibers. While these early mattresses were certainly more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, they provided little in the way of support and tended to sag over time.

It wasn’t until the mid-1800s that the first metal spring mattress was patented in the United States by James Marshall. This new design featured a series of interconnected springs that provided a much more supportive sleeping surface than the previous hay-filled mattresses. As the popularity of metal spring mattresses grew, so too did the need for advancements in spring technology.

In the early 1900s, the Bonnell coil was introduced. These hourglass-shaped springs were interconnected, providing a stable base for the mattress while still allowing for some flexibility and bounce. This design was popular for many years, but it had its limitations, as the interconnected springs tended to create motion transfer between sleeping partners.

In the 1920s, the Marshall coil was introduced. These coils were individually wrapped in fabric, allowing them to move independently of one another and contour more effectively to the shape of the body. This design became known as the “pocket coil” and is still used in many modern mattresses today. Other advancements in spring technology include the introduction of offset coils, which are designed to minimize motion transfer, and continuous coil systems, which use a single wire to create a series of interconnecting springs.

The use of springs in mattresses provides several benefits beyond comfort and support. Springs help to increase the durability of the mattress, preventing sagging and ensuring that the mattress retains its shape over time. They also allow for better breathability, which can help regulate body temperature and prevent overheating while you sleep.

Today, mattress manufacturers continue to innovate with new types of spring systems and hybrid mattresses that combine springs with other materials like foam or latex. Some companies are even developing “smart” mattresses that use sensors and other technology to monitor sleep patterns and adjust the mattress settings for optimal comfort.

In conclusion, the history of springs in mattresses is a fascinating one, with constant innovation and improvement over the years. From hay-filled mattresses to the latest pocket coil technology, springs continue to play a crucial role in creating the perfect sleeping surface.

As mattress technology advanced, manufacturers experimented with different spring designs to improve comfort and support. The Bonnell coil, also known as the hourglass coil, was introduced in the early 1900s. The Bonnell coil provides a stable base for the mattress and offers some flexibility and bounce. The hourglass shape of the coils distributes weight evenly across the mattress, preventing sagging and ensuring that the mattress retains its shape over time.

In the 1920s, the pocket coil was introduced. These coils are individually wrapped in fabric, allowing them to move independently of one another and contour more effectively to the shape of the body. This design provides better support and conformability than the Bonnell coil and has become increasingly popular in recent years. Pocket coil systems offer several advantages over traditional Bonnell coils, including better motion isolation and targeted support.

Continuous coil systems use a single wire to create a series of interconnecting springs. This design provides a stable base for the mattress and offers good support and durability. Continuous coil systems are typically less expensive than pocket coil systems, but they may not provide the same level of conformability and motion isolation.

When shopping for a new mattress, it’s important to consider your personal preferences and sleeping style to determine which type of spring system is right for you. Modern mattress springs offer a range of options, each with its own unique set of benefits and drawbacks. Whether you prefer the support of a Bonnell coil, the conformability of a pocket coil, or the durability of a continuous coil system, there is a mattress spring design that will meet your needs.

Advantages of Mattress Springs

Mattress springs offer several advantages that make them an important component of a good night’s sleep.

Firstly, mattress springs provide the necessary support and comfort needed for a restful sleep. The springs work together to distribute weight evenly across the sleeping surface, keeping the spine in proper alignment and reducing the risk of back and neck pain. Additionally, the springs contour to the body’s shape, providing a comfortable sleeping surface that makes it easier to get and stay asleep.

Another advantage of mattress springs is their durability. Mattress springs are designed to withstand the weight and movement of the body, making them a long-lasting component of a mattress. By providing support over the long term, they help prevent sagging and ensure that the mattress retains its shape, providing a comfortable and supportive sleeping surface for years to come.

Finally, mattress springs promote breathability, which is especially important for people who tend to sleep hot. The design of mattress springs allows air to circulate through the mattress, which helps to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating during the night. This breathability can improve the overall quality of sleep, leading to a more restful and refreshing night’s sleep.

In conclusion, the advantages of mattress springs are numerous and important. They provide the necessary support and comfort for a good night’s sleep, are durable and long-lasting, and promote breathability for better temperature regulation. When shopping for a new mattress, it’s essential to consider the type and quality of springs used in the design to ensure that you get the best possible sleeping surface for your needs.

Mattress Spring Innovations

Innovation in mattress technology has led to the development of new and exciting uses for mattress springs. Hybrid mattresses, for example, combine traditional spring systems with other materials like foam or latex. This combination provides a supportive base with added pressure relief and contouring, offering a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep.

Smart mattresses represent another exciting innovation in the world of mattress technology. These mattresses incorporate sensors and other technology to monitor sleep patterns, adjust mattress settings, and provide personalized recommendations for improving sleep quality. By tracking factors like sleep duration, heart rate, and body temperature, smart mattresses can provide the most comfortable and supportive sleeping surface possible. Some smart mattresses even offer automatic adjustments for snoring, individualized temperature control, and massage settings.

Looking forward, the future of mattress springs is likely to involve continued innovation and advancements in technology. With a greater focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness, manufacturers may explore new materials and designs that are more environmentally friendly while still providing the necessary support and comfort.

As sleep science continues to advance, manufacturers may also find new ways to incorporate technology into spring systems. The use of sensors to monitor the pressure exerted on each spring, for example, could lead to even more customizable and supportive sleeping surfaces.

Overall, the future of mattress springs is exciting and full of potential for continued innovation and improvement. As new technologies are developed and new materials are explored, the possibilities for improving sleep quality through better spring design are virtually endless.

Mattress springs are crucial to achieving a restful and comfortable night’s sleep. They provide the necessary support for the body, distribute weight evenly across the sleeping surface, and offer a comfortable surface to sleep on. Additionally, the breathability of spring systems can help regulate body temperature, further improving sleep quality.

With continued research and development, it’s likely that we will see even more innovations in spring technology in the years to come.

In conclusion, mattress springs play a critical role in achieving a restful and rejuvenating night’s sleep. From the early days of hay-filled mattresses to the cutting-edge designs of today, spring technology has continued to evolve and improve. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the future, all aimed at providing a better night’s sleep for everyone.

  • Light blocking curtains: Huberman recommends using light blocking curtains to create a completely dark environment for sleep. This helps to promote the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles.
  • White noise machine: Huberman also recommends using a white noise machine to block out any distracting noises. This can be helpful for people who live in noisy environments or who have light sleepers in their household.
  • Weighted blanket: Huberman has also mentioned that weighted blankets can be helpful for some people with sleep problems. Weighted blankets apply deep pressure stimulation, which can have a calming and relaxing effect.
  • Magnesium supplements: Huberman recommends taking magnesium supplements before bed to help with relaxation and sleep quality. Magnesium is a mineral that is essential for many bodily functions, including sleep.

It is important to note that these are just a few of Andrew Huberman’s recommendations for sleep products. There are many other products and supplements that may be helpful for improving sleep quality. It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any new supplements or making any changes to your sleep routine.

Here are some additional tips for improving sleep quality:

  • Establish a regular sleep schedule and stick to it as much as possible, even on weekends.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed.
  • Get regular exercise, but avoid exercising too close to bedtime.
  • Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool.

If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor. There may be an underlying medical condition that is causing your sleep problems.

Andrew Huberman’s Favorite Mattress

Andrew Huberman has specifically recommended the Eight Sleep Pod mattress cover. The Eight Sleep Pod is a smart mattress cover that uses temperature regulation to help users sleep better. It has a built-in water cooling and heating system that can be adjusted to the user’s individual preferences.

Huberman has said that the Eight Sleep Pod has “completely transformed” his sleep. He has also said that it has helped him to sleep through the night more consistently and to wake up feeling more refreshed.

Here are some of the benefits of the Eight Sleep Pod:

  • Temperature regulation: The Eight Sleep Pod can help to regulate the user’s body temperature throughout the night. This is important for sleep quality, as body temperature naturally drops during sleep.
  • Sleep tracking: The Eight Sleep Pod also tracks the user’s sleep patterns. This data can be used to identify areas where the user can improve their sleep hygiene.
  • Smart features: The Eight Sleep Pod has a number of smart features, such as the ability to set sleep schedules and receive wake-up notifications.

It is important to note that the Eight Sleep Pod is a relatively expensive mattress cover. However, Huberman has said that it is worth the investment for people who are serious about improving their sleep quality.

If you are interested in trying the Eight Sleep Pod, you can sign up for a free trial.

His podcast is sponsored by Helix Sleep and the Eight Sleep Pod cover works well with all of the Helix Sleep Mattresses.  The Helix Midnight Elite is the most popular mattress of the Helix brand and just recently launched.

  • L-theanine: L-theanine is an amino acid that has been shown to promote relaxation and sleep. Huberman recommends taking 200-400 mg of L-theanine before bed.
  • Apigenin: Apigenin is a flavonoid that has been shown to have calming and sleep-promoting effects. Huberman recommends taking 50 mg of apigenin before bed.
  • Glycine: Glycine is an amino acid that is involved in the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Huberman recommends taking 2 grams of glycine before bed, 3-4 nights per week.
  • GABA: GABA is a neurotransmitter that has calming and relaxing effects. Huberman recommends taking 100 mg of GABA before bed, 3-4 nights per week.

It is important to note that these are just Huberman’s recommendations. It is always best to talk to your doctor before taking any new supplements, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

Andrew Huberman has not specifically recommended any bed sheets. However, he has mentioned that breathable fabrics, such as bamboo and linen, are ideal for sleep. These fabrics are naturally cooling and moisture-wicking, which can help to keep you comfortable throughout the night.

Here are a few bed sheet brands that make sheets from breathable fabrics:

It is important to note that everyone has different preferences when it comes to bed sheets. It is best to try out a few different brands and fabrics to see what works best for you.

Here are a few additional tips for choosing bed sheets for better sleep:

  • Choose a fabric that is soft and comfortable against your skin.
  • Avoid sheets that are made from synthetic materials, as these materials can trap heat and moisture.
  • Look for sheets that have a high thread count. This means that the sheets are made from finer yarns, which will make them feel softer and more luxurious.
  • Consider purchasing sheets that are pre-washed. This will help to prevent the sheets from shrinking or fading after you wash them.

Optimal Amount of Sleep According to Andrew Huberman

Andrew Huberman recommends sleeping for 7-8 hours per night. This is the amount of sleep that most adults need to function optimally. However, some people may need more or less sleep than this.

Huberman has also said that it is important to get enough sleep in the first half of the night. This is because the first half of the night is when the body produces the most growth hormone. Growth hormone is essential for repairing and rebuilding tissues, and it also plays a role in memory consolidation and learning.

If you are having trouble sleeping, Huberman recommends trying the following tips:

  • Establish a regular sleep schedule and stick to it as much as possible, even on weekends.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed.
  • Get regular exercise, but avoid exercising too close to bedtime.
  • Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool.

If you are still having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor. They may be able to help you identify any underlying medical conditions that could be affecting your sleep.

Here are some additional tips from Huberman for improving sleep quality:

  • Take magnesium supplements before bed.
  • Avoid blue light exposure before bed.
  • Use a weighted blanket.
  • Practice non-sleep deep rest (NSDR).

NSDR is a type of meditation that can be used to improve sleep quality. It involves lying in a dark, quiet room and focusing on your breath. You can start with 20 minutes of NSDR before bed and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.

  • Eat a light dinner 3-4 hours before bed.
  • Avoid blue light exposure in the hour before bed.
  • Practice NSDR for 20 minutes before bed.
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.

In addition to these general life hacks, Huberman also recommends a number of specific things that people can do to improve their health and well-being. For example, he recommends taking certain supplements, such as magnesium. He also recommends using certain techniques, such as cold exposure and breathwork.

If you were to follow all of Huberman’s life hacks, your day would be very structured and disciplined. You would be getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and using a variety of techniques to improve your cognitive function and overall health.

It is important to note that Huberman’s life hacks are not a one-size-fits-all solution. What works for one person may not work for another. It is important to experiment and find what works best for you. It is also important to listen to your body and rest when you need to.

đź’¤ My Personal Experience with the Helix Midnight Elite

I’ve tested a lot of mattresses over the years — in-store, at home, and for side-by-side comparisons — and the Helix Midnight Elite is easily one of the most luxurious boxed beds I’ve laid on.

The first thing you notice is the height. At 16 inches tall, it feels substantial. The pillow top has that upscale, boutique hotel vibe — plush and pressure-relieving without being too soft. I could feel my body gently sinking in, but I never felt stuck. It’s that perfect combo of cushy comfort up top with strong underlying support.

As a side sleeper, I appreciated how the zoning worked under my shoulders and hips. After a few nights, I noticed less morning stiffness in my lower back — something I tend to track closely with every mattress I review. Back sleeping was also solid. Stomach sleeping was okay for short naps, but this mattress really shines for side and back positions.

Motion transfer was nearly nonexistent — ideal for couples. I did a “water glass test” and even some casual tossing and turning didn’t make it move much.

Edge support surprised me, in a good way. A lot of plush mattresses fall short here, but I felt fully supported sitting or sleeping near the edge.

One note: this bed is heavy. It ships in two boxes, and setup was definitely a two-person job. Once it’s in place though, it’s rock-solid. No squeaking, no shifting — just a quiet, stable sleep experience.

Overall, if you’re someone who values premium materials, pressure relief, and a supportive feel without sacrificing comfort — the Helix Midnight Elite lives up to its name.

The Helix Elite Collection: Where Exceptional Luxury Meets Customized Comfort

Helix has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the mattress industry since its inception. The company believes that a tailored sleep experience, based on individual preferences, is the key to a restful night. Helix has always focused on providing the highest quality materials, offering the most convenient buying experience, and maintaining reasonable prices.

However, Helix recognizes that sometimes, customers seek a taste of true luxury.

Introducing the Helix Elite Collection, a celebration of innovation and the epitome of mattress design. Each Helix Elite mattress is crafted with high-density foams, enveloping microcoils, and the most advanced cooling technology available. The result is a 16-inch tall mattress that offers unparalleled comfort and support, rivaling even the most luxurious hotel beds.

The Helix Elite Collection features six distinct mattresses, continuing the company’s mission to cater to customers’ unique sleep preferences while providing an unmatched sleep experience with touches of high-end luxury.

What makes the Helix Elite Collection truly exceptional?

  1. Five High-Density Comfort Layers

Helix’s dedication to providing tailored comfort based on individual sleep styles and firmness preferences remains unwavering. The Elite Collection offers five distinct foam layers in each mattress, designed to maximize pressure relief, cradling comfort, and long-lasting durability. Each mattress in the Elite Collection contains a unique blend of high-density foams to achieve the desired feel and firmness level, ensuring deep and restful sleep night after night.

  1. Rethinking Steel Coils

Helix firmly believes in the hybrid mattress design, which combines foam layers with steel coils in the base of the mattress for optimal pressure relief and durable support. In the Elite Collection, Helix introduces microcoils to their mattresses, taking cradling comfort to new heights. Sandwiched between high-density foam layers, the two layers of microcoils provide unparalleled comfort and pressure relief while maintaining durability and support. The individually wrapped coils offer improved motion isolation, virtually eliminating movement felt across the mattress’s surface.

  1. Advanced GlacioTex™ Cooling

Cooling is often cited as one of the most critical considerations when shopping for a mattress. Helix has continuously sought to improve the cooling capabilities of their mattresses by introducing GlacioTex™ cooling fabrics. The Helix Elite Collection showcases the most advanced GlacioTex™ Elite cooling fabric, included at no additional charge. This phase-change fabric offers a cool-to-the-touch feel and efficiently transfers heat away from the body, ensuring optimal temperature regulation for deeper and more refreshing sleep.

The Helix Elite Collection exemplifies the perfect fusion of exceptional luxury and customized comfort, promising an unparalleled sleep experience tailored to individual preferences.

I’ve been sleeping on the Helix Midnight Elite for about a month now, and I’m absolutely loving it. I’m a side sleeper, and I used to wake up with a lot of back pain. But since I’ve been sleeping on this mattress, I haven’t had any pain at all. The mattress is so supportive, and it conforms to my body perfectly. I also love the cooling feature. I used to wake up hot and sweaty all the time, but now I sleep soundly all night long.

The mattress is also very comfortable. It’s not too soft and not too firm, and it’s just the right amount of plush. I love sinking into the mattress when I go to bed, and I always wake up feeling refreshed.

Overall, I’m incredibly happy with the Helix Midnight Elite. It’s the best mattress I’ve ever slept on, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new mattress.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the Helix Midnight Elite:

Pros:

  • Comfortable
  • Supportive
  • Cooling
  • Hypoallergenic
  • CertiPUR-US certified
  • 100-night sleep trial
  • 10-year warranty

Cons:

  • Can be a bit expensive
  • Some people find the cooling feature to be too strong

Overall, the Helix Midnight Elite is a great mattress that offers a lot of comfort and support. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s worth the investment if you’re looking for a mattress that will last for years to come.

Helix Midnight Elite Firmness

🎯 Why I Rate the Helix Midnight Elite a 5.5/10 on Firmness

Although Helix markets the Midnight Elite as a medium-firm mattress, I personally found it to feel a bit softer than expected — closer to a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

That’s mostly due to the thick, quilted pillow top and plush comfort layers that give it a cloud-like feel when you first lie down. There’s a noticeable sink-in sensation around the shoulders and hips, especially for side sleepers like me. It cradles the body more than a true medium-firm, which makes it feel softer on top, even though the support underneath is solid and well-zoned.

For back and combo sleepers, it may still feel supportive enough — but if you're expecting a firmer, more responsive surface, this might feel more plush than anticipated. That said, the softness is intentional — this is a luxury mattress designed for pressure relief and contouring, not for an ultra-firm sleep surface.

If you like that "sleeping in" vs. "sleeping on" feel, this is exactly the kind of mattress you'll appreciate.

The Elite Layer of the Helix Midnight Elite

What makes this mattress so convenient is that you can actually swap out the top layer to make the Midnight Elite a different model as all the Elite series Helix mattresses have the same base layer. So for example, if you get the Helix Midnight Elite and decide it is too soft or firm, you can just get a different top layer to change the comfort. It it much less wasteful and much more convenient. Everyone saves money.

Here’s a picture of the Helix Midnight Elite comfort layer.

Here it is unboxed. It has a zipper so you can see the insides which include two layers of microcoils and two layers of foam. From what I can tell, both sides are the same.

If you are trying to decide between the Helix Midight Elite and the Helix Dusk Elite, below is a video comparison of the two mattresses side by side. The differences are subtle but noticeable, especially after sleeping on them all night.

Similar to the differences in the Luxe models, the Midnight Elite has memory foam in the top layers while the Helix Dusk Elite uses a proprietary responsive foam layer making it slightly firmer and bouncier.

Helix Midnight Elite vs. Saatva

Choosing between the Helix Midnight Elite and Saatva mattresses can be difficult as they both offer top-notch features and cater to different needs. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Helix Midnight Elite:

Pros:

  • Exceptional pressure relief: Plush memory foam layers contour to your body, ideal for side sleepers and those with pain.
  • Customizable: Helix offers a sleep quiz to match you to the perfect mattress from 15 options, catering to various preferences.
  • Zoned support: Lumbar support layer targets your lower back for better alignment.
  • Cooling design: Breathable cover and pocketed coils enhance airflow.
  • Affordable: Often costs less than Saatva, especially during promotions.

Cons:

  • Less responsive: Memory foam tends to hug rather than bounce, not ideal for combination sleepers who prefer a springier feel.
  • Firmer edge support: Might feel less comfortable sitting or sleeping near the edge.
  • Shorter sleep trial: 100 nights compared to Saatva’s 180 nights.

Saatva Classic:

Pros:

  • Luxury feel: Thicker plush top layer and a more traditional innerspring construction provide a decadent sleeping experience.
  • Stronger edge support: Coils extend to the very edge, perfect for couples and frequent edge sitters.
  • Durable: Excellent build quality with premium materials, promising long-term use.
  • Good for back and stomach sleepers: Firmer feel offers better support for these sleeping positions.
  • Longer sleep trial: 180 nights to test it out and feel confident.

Cons:

  • Less pressure relief: Coil and plush top construction might not be ideal for side sleepers or those with pain.
  • Limited customization: Only two firmness options (Luxury Firm and Firm) compared to Helix’s extensive selection.
  • More expensive: Generally pricier than Helix Midnight Elite, especially for larger sizes.
  • Not cooling: Traditional innerspring construction may trap more heat.
  • No in-box delivery: Saatva mattresses are only delivered white-glove style, which can be inconvenient.

So, which is better?

  • Choose Helix Midnight Elite if: You prioritize pressure relief, back pain support, customizable firmness, affordability, and cooling.
  • Choose Saatva Classic if: You prefer a firmer feel, strong edge support, are a back or stomach sleeper, and value a generous sleep trial.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and preferences. Consider your sleeping style, body type, budget, and priorities when making your decision. Both mattresses offer high quality at different price points and cater to varying comfort desires.

âś… Final Thoughts on the Helix Midnight Elite

The Helix Midnight Elite isn’t just another boxed mattress — it’s Helix’s most ambitious, feature-rich model to date. With a tall, 16″ profile, zoned coil support, and a plush pillow top, it strikes a rare balance between luxury and function. It’s thoughtfully engineered for side sleepers and couples who want pressure relief without sacrificing support.

Yes, it’s a premium price point, but you’re getting a mattress that rivals in-store models priced even higher. The cooling cover, reinforced edge support, and deep pressure relief all work together to deliver a genuinely elevated sleep experience.

If you’re looking for a mattress that feels high-end the moment you lie down—and stays supportive through the night—the Helix Midnight Elite is absolutely worth the investment. Especially if you’re in the market for showroom-level luxury that ships in a box.

Here are some sources that confirm this:

  • PlushBeds‘ website: Their “Our Story” page includes a letter from Michael Hughes where he emphasizes their status as a family-owned business.
  • Interview with Michael Hughes: In a 2024 interview with Mattress Clarity, Michael Hughes clearly states that PlushBeds is still independently owned.

Therefore, you can be confident that PlushBeds remains a family-run company dedicated to its core values and committed to providing customers with high-quality, natural mattresses and bedding.

Plushbeds is a company known for their affordable, quality, latex mattresses so I was really excited when they sent me their 10-inch Botanical Bliss for review. It’s always nice when I go to a website to buy something and see a phone number right away and that’s the case with PlushBeds. If you have any questions about the product, a recent order or a warranty, they are just a phone call away and a human will actually help you. Whether or not you like PlushBeds is a personal decision but I think you will be very pleased with the customer service either way.

Overview of Plushbeds

For this review, I received the medium version of the Botanical Bliss, 10-inch mattress. I chose this because The Botanical Bliss is their most popular model. They offer a 9-inch and 12-inch version but for most people, the 10-inch version will work just fine. If you have an RV you’re also in luck because PlushBeds makes a latex mattress designed to fit an RV bed. Here’s a video overview of the mattress which includes a setup which is different than your typical foam mattress.

Construction of the Botanical Bliss Mattress

Like most natural latex mattresses, the Botanical Bliss has a simple construction. There’s no mystery about what’s inside because it is made with all-natural materials. The difference with this mattress is that one box contains the mattress cover and the other has the latex layers that you lay inside them cover then zip up.

Organic Cotton Cover

Breathable Comfort

Our soft knitted organic cotton cover offers unrestricted airflow & moisture absorption to keep you sleeping cool & dry on your latex mattress. And because it’s certified organic, you know it was grown sustainably, without any dangerous pesticides or herbicides.

Organic New Zealand Wool

Temperature regulating

Up to 10 lbs. of certified organic wool in every latex mattress not only provides exceptional soothing support, but it breathes naturally and helps your body maintain a well-regulated cool and comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Organic Latex

Perfect pressure relief

Each layer of organic Dunlop latex from Arpico is uniquely calibrated to a different firmness, so you can dial in with precision to the perfect level of softness & support guaranteed to last the next 25 years on your latex mattress.

My PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Findings

The first thing you’ll find when you unbox this mattress is a card with their 25-year warranty which is a very long warranty for a mattress. I think they can stand by it because latex is a very resilient material. Of course, all warranties hedge a bit but the fact that they go 25 years means they stand by their product.

Plush Beds Warranty

You get 2 boxes, make sure to unbox the cover first and lay it out on the bed. You will then open the second box which has the latex layers and lay those into the cover. With this mattress, each latex layer has a different firmness so the order in which you stack the layers will affect how firm the mattress feels. This also adds customizability.

Botanical Bliss Assembly

Here’s a shot with the first layer in the bed. It is tight-fitting so make sure the layers line up evenly.

Botanical Bliss Assembly

Plushbeds has really nice detail. The handles are stitched into the mattress along with nice vent holes on each side.

plushbeds handles

You can see below that the cover is sewn with a changed pattern. The keeps the wool inside from clumping and gives the mattress more visual appeal.

plushbeds cover

As you can see below my bowling ball doesn’t sink much. And in the video you can see that the mattress has some bounce since it is all rubber latex.

plushbeds sink

The Botanical Bliss does a good job with contouring for being a medium mattress. I expected it to be firmer than it was compared to my experience with other all latex mattresses.

plushbeds push

Here’s a view of me sleeping on my side. I could have used more sinkage along my shoulders with this mattress and you can see that I’m scrunching up the pillow to compensate.

My Botanical Bliss Recommendation

The Botanical Bliss is a really good value for an all latex mattress. They use GOTS certified organic cotton covers and more wool inside the mattress than their competitors which will help regulate temperature better. These mattresses are also made in the USA. On top of that, you get a 100-night trial where you can try it out in your house and if you don’t like it, they will come to pick it up from you for free. Yes, this is common with most online brands but it isn’t as common with all latex mattresses because they are inherently more expensive.

I prefer a more plush mattress myself and probably would go with a softer version but if you like medium-firm feel, this is a great choice. Latex mattresses always feel a little firmer to me than foam or hybrid mattresses so just keep that in mind as you shop. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to try a PlushBed since they have a free trial and they are one of the best values for all-natural latex mattresses.

Saatva Sheets

Saatva, known for their innerspring mattress sold exclusively online, now has a new line of organic cotton sheets called, Lofton. These sheets are a 300-thread count weave using long-staple cotton. Right now they come in three colors, white, ivory, and grey. For this review, I received a free set of queen-size grey sheets. Aside from the feel and look I was amazed by the presentation packaging of these sheets. They would hands down make an excellent gift for newlyweds or as a housewarming gift.

Ordering and Unboxing the Saatva Lofton Sheets

You can only order these sheets directly from Saatva. They come in all standard sizes and as I mentioned come in three colors. With each order, you get a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. Shipping is quick and after you place your order they should arrive in about five business days.

Here’s a look at the fitted sheet. They even have labels indicating the size, queen, and what side is for the head/feet so you no longer have to guess.

lofton fitted sheets

The fitted sheets will accommodate a mattress up to 15 inches deep. However, if you have a mattress that is right at 15 inches, I would go with deeper pocket sheets.

My Lofton Sheets Recommendation

These sheets look and feel great. They would make an excellent sheet for day-to-day use as they are durable and will hold up to regular wear and tear. As with the other organic cotton sheets I have reviewed, it will take a few laundry cycles to get their true feel as they will get softer with more washing.

Saatva Sheets Complaints

Saatva sheets are generally well-reviewed by customers, with many praising their softness, breathability, and durability. However, there are a few common complaints that customers have reported.

Slippery sateen sheets

One of the most common complaints about Saatva sheets is that the sateen sheets can be a bit too slippery. This is due to the smooth, satiny finish of the sateen weave. Some customers have found that this slipperiness can make it difficult to get in and out of bed, or to keep the sheets in place.

Wrinkling

Another common complaint is that Saatva sheets wrinkle easily. This is especially true of the sateen sheets, which have a higher thread count. Some customers have found that they need to iron or steam their Saatva sheets after each wash.

Lack of color options

Saatva sheets are only available in a few neutral colors. This may be a disappointment for customers who prefer bolder colors or patterns.

Price

Saatva sheets are on the more expensive side. This may be a deterrent for some customers.

Overall, Saatva sheets are a good option for customers who are looking for high-quality sheets made from natural materials. However, it’s important to be aware of the potential drawbacks, such as slipperiness, wrinkling, and lack of color options.

Here are some tips for avoiding these common complaints:

  • If you’re concerned about slipperiness, choose a percale or linen weave instead of sateen.
  • To prevent wrinkles, wash your Saatva sheets in cold water on a gentle cycle and hang them to dry.
  • If you prefer bolder colors or patterns, consider a different brand of sheets.
  • If you’re on a budget, choose the Essential sheet set, which is the most affordable option from Saatva.

Here are a few sheets similar to Saatva sheets:

  • Parachute Organic Cotton Sheets: These sheets are made from 100% organic cotton and are available in a variety of thread counts, including 200, 300, 400, and 500. They have a soft, smooth feel and are known for their breathability and durability. Parachute sheets are also available in a wider range of colors than Saatva sheets.

  • Brooklinen Classic Core Sheet Set: These sheets are made from 100% long-staple cotton and are available in a variety of thread counts, including 180, 200, 250, and 300. They have a crisp, cool feel and are known for their softness and durability. Brooklinen sheets are also available in a variety of colors and patterns.
  • Luxome Luxury Sheet Set: These sheets are made from a blend of 60% cotton and 40% bamboo and are available in a variety of thread counts, including 220, 250, and 300. They have a soft, smooth feel and are known for their breathability and moisture-wicking properties. Luxome sheets are also available in a wider range of colors than Saatva sheets.
  • Birch Organic Sheets: These sheets are made from 100% organic linen and are available in a variety of thread counts, including 160, 220, and 280. They have a relaxed, airy feel and are known for their breathability and durability. Birch sheets are also available in a variety of colors and patterns.

The best sheet for you will depend on your individual preferences and needs. Consider factors such as fabric type, thread count, weave, feel, and price when making your decision.
